McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa set the pace in the opening two practice sessions for this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who is back in a testing role this weekend after subbing for the injured Juan Montoya three weeks ago in Bahrain, set the fastest lap of the day, 1:20.484. That was more than half a second faster than his best lap in the morning session.

'It has been a satisfactory day with the team working well despite a minor technical difficulty this morning on Alex's car,' said McLaren boss Ron Dennis. 'There has been solid work on all cars evaluating our Michelin tire choice for the weekend and working on set up. The whole weekend is clearly going to be competitive.'

Jenson Button was second fastest, showing some promise for the updated BAR-Honda while Kimia Raikkonen in the second McLaren was third. BAR-Honda have yet to finish in three races but the team are optimistic their problems are behind them after completing close to 6,000km in five days of testing last week with no major problems."
