IRL: Japan... Carpentier 13th

TSN.ca - Auto Racing - Canada's Sports Leader: "MOTEGI, Japan (AP) - Defending champion Dan Wheldon of England came from behind with two laps remaining Saturday to win the Indy Japan 300.

Driving a Honda-powered Dallara, Wheldon won his second consecutive race at Twin Ring Motegi when he inherited the lead on lap 198 after South Africa's Tomas Scheckter ran out of gas.

'I'm very proud to have won this race,' said Wheldon. 'It was a difficult race. You had to watch your fuel level after the 140th lap and keep an eye on your tires.'

Scott Sharp was 3.4612 seconds back of Wheldon while Buddy Rice was third. Female rookie Danica Patrick, who started from the front row along with Sam Hornish Jr., was fourth in the 200-lap race at the 1.5-mile Honda-built oval.

Patrick Carpentier of Joliette, Que., was 13th.

It was the best IndyCar Series finish for Patrick, the only female driver competing in the Indy Racing League this season.

'We had a good race car today,' said Patrick. 'You have to get the timing right entering the corners. Our team did a great job with the calculations today. Some of the other teams did calculate as well as ours and that made a big difference in the end.'"

DELAWARE: SATURDAY’S RACING CANCELLED

APC Enduro 250 race still on for Sunday, May 1, 2005

Delaware, ON (April 29, 2005): Delaware Speedway’s racing program for Saturday, April 30, 2005 has been cancelled. The APC Enduro 250 race scheduled for Sunday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. is still on as scheduled.

Saturday’s cancellation is due to inclement weather that is forecast to enter the area overnight and remain through most of the day Saturday. A weather system moving into the area is expected to bring rain and unseasonably cold temperatures throughout much of Southwestern Ontario on Saturday.

“It’s unfortunate to have to make this decision two weeks in a row,” said Delaware Speedway General Manager Kevin Bulmer. “But with so many of our competitors, sponsors and fans coming from a long way out-of-town, and the forecast as bleak as it is, we feel it’s the only fair decision to make. We’ve had our eyes on every forecast we can find and have consulted with our local meteorologists, and they all say the same thing: it’s going to be a cold, wet, miserable day on Saturday.”

The first weekly racing of the 2005 season will take place on Friday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m., with the lineup to include the Cintas Late Models, Kendall Motor Oil Street Stocks, Challenger Motor Freight Trucks and a King of the Hill spectator’s race.

There are not yet any confirmed plans to re-schedule any of the weekly races lost to weather over the last two weeks. “We’d like to at least get the first races completed before we start shuffling the schedule all around, if at all,” said Bulmer. “When we get our competitors to the track we will discuss that together.”

unday’s APC Enduro 250 race ( which was originally scheduled to run last week, on Sunday, April 24, but was postponed due to steady rain and wet snow) is still on as scheduled.

“As far as Sunday’s race is concerned, we’ll re-evaluate the situation on Saturday, and possibly Sunday morning, to see if we’ll have enough of a window in the weather to get that event in,” said Bulmer. “For now, we ask all competitors, staff, fans and sponsors to consider Sunday’s race on as scheduled.”
Spectator gates will open at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and the race will start at 2:00 p.m.

SOS: SOS POISED TO LAUNCH 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON!

By Bill Oldroyd

The Southern Ontario Sprints are set to launch their 10th Anniversary season in just over a week, that is, if the ‘rain-man’ stays away long enough. The first event on the 2005 calendar will be the traditional season-opener race at Brighton Speedway on May 7th. A total of 16 points races at 4 different tracks have been scheduled. The season wrap-up in mid-September will see the SOS host an invitational on the Friday night followed by the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals (SOS/SOD/ESS/PSG are affiliate sponsors for this event) on Saturday, both at Ohsweken Speedway. This weekend will no doubt be the biggest weekend of sprint car racing ever staged in Canada.

Club president Peter Turford, along with all the SOS members and drivers are also very excited about the addition of several new sponsors to the growing list of supporters for the 2005 season. Returning this year are: Pennzoil, Signet Tool Inc., Wiseco Pistons, Leaf Racewear, Kenetic Photos, B&B Oval Track Products, and BS&B Radiator. Joining the SOS family of sponsors for 2005 are: Brodix Cylinder Heads, Grisdale Racing Products, Winters Performance Products and Inside Canadian Racing. The SOS extends a very special welcome to all the supporters for the 10th Anniversary season.

As for the competitors, it looks like the SOS will once again have a very strong field of cars for all events. Car counts are expected to increase over last years’ record breaking season with some strong new rookies being added to an already healthy field of veterans. Unfortunately for the SOS, the 2004 Champion Cody Geldart will likely not make any SOS events in 2005. He will be pursuing his dreams racing with the All Stars as well as some World of Outlaw events in the US for 2005. The SOS wishes him all the success he is due and encourages all the fans to keep an eye on Cody’s progress by logging on to the SOS Web Site, www.southernontariosprints.com and click on the ‘Code Watch’ link where his results will be posted.

If you have not attended an SOS event, we encourage you to do so as the action is always fast and furious and the 10th Anniversary tour will definitely live up to all your expectations. If you have already experienced the thrills of sprint car racing, we look forward to seeing you at the track to help us celebrate this special season of sprint car racing in Canada!

DERBY: ITMN Championship Series Preview

The 2005 CSBRA INSIDE TRACK MOTORSPORTS NEWS CHAMPIONSHIP 'DERBY RACING' SERIES will officially begin at Kawartha Downs Speedway on May 22nd.

With an ever expanding number of cars entering the derby race circuit, Peterborough will once again host 4 major events as part of the Championship.

Entries from as far west as Windsor and from Rocherster New York will join a large number of Peterborough racers and other gravity drag teams from Eastern Ontario at Kawartha Downs.

Support for the local sport and derby in general has picked up as well, with the arrival of Big Game Fishing Charters who have donated over $800.00 in Charter gift certificates.

Cleary Homes have come on board by supplying and building a new set of starting ramp bases for the season at KD. While the local Peterborough organization continues to search for sponsorship support to purchase a new timing system to replace on lost in the flooding of last July, other projects are being developed to add equipment such as safety cones, and a sound system.

The support of Inside Track Motorsports News with the points championship and prizes for events is a prime example of businesses discovering the value of joining forces with a sport that encourages good citizenship, sportsmanship, respect and team work. 2005 looks to be a breakout year for derby and its growth.

MICHIGAN INT'L SPEEDWAY: Batman Begins 400

BROOKLYN, Mich. - Warner Bros. Consumer Products and International Speedway Corporation announced today that Batman Begins, the highly anticipated film from Warner Bros. Pictures, will take center stage at Michigan International Speedway on June 19 for the running of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup "Batman Begins 400." The film opens worldwide on June 15.

Tickets are still available for the "Batman Begins 400 at Michigan International Speedway," by calling the MIS ticket hotline at 1-800-354-1010 or by logging on to www.MISpeedway.com.

"We are very proud to be making history with the Batman Begins 400 at MIS, and to again be partnering with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, DC Comics, and Roush Racing," said Michigan International Speedway President, Brett Shelton. "Our fans really enjoyed the Justice League racing weekend last August and I know it will be another outstanding weekend of racing. This race sponsorship certainly adds to our history of putting superheroes in Victory Lane at MIS."

"The launch of Batman Begins will be fun for the fans at the track and those watching from home," said NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France. "Batman will cheer on the 43 super heroes that will be competing for the Batman Begins 400 at Michigan International Speedway."

"We're looking forward to pairing the on-screen excitement of Batman Begins to the on-track excitement of NASCAR," said Dan Romanelli, President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Consumer Products. "A fast car, the BatmobileÔ, and a host of high-tech gadgets have always been key to Batman's success in fighting his way to victory over crime. As NASCAR's finest drivers take to the track on June 19 for the Batman Begins 400 at Michigan International Speedway, they will utilize all of the high-tech gadgets at their disposal to take their team to victory lane."

"Our relationship with Warner Bros. has been long and incredibly rewarding for NASCAR fans," said Lesa France Kennedy, President of International Speedway Corporation. "With the Batman Begins 400 we are taking the entertainment factor to a new level. We're looking forward to seeing the racing action unfold on the track-and the super hero action unfold in theaters."

Roush Racing legend Mark Martin will get a little extra Batman power to help him get to Victory Lane, as his Ford will feature a special Batman Begins paint scheme for the race. Martin's fellow Roush Racing driver, Ricky Craven, will also be sporting a Batman Begins scheme during the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event on June 18.

"It's an honor to be participating in the Batman Begins program this season, especially at Michigan, which I consider our home track," said Jack Roush. "We had a great time with Greg's (Biffle) victory last year with The Flash paint scheme on his car, so I am banking on Batman providing incentive to both Mark and Ricky this year."

Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (CHRISTIAN BALE) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Race fans will have a front-row seat for a one-of-a-kind celebration of the film's launch when the Batmobile from the film leads the pack of 43 race cars off of pit road to start the battle for the checkered flag.
Besides the on-track action that fans will be able to enjoy during the weekend, the newly redesigned AAA Motorsports Fan Plaza behind the main grandstand at Michigan International Speedway will incorporate the Batman Begins Fan Zone, which will feature the Batmobile from the film, Mark Martin's Batman Begins themed car, the Ricky Craven truck, and the fantasy and event cars that are part of the weekend's Batman action. The Batman Begins Fan Zone will also include other activities and exclusive merchandise based on the film and the Batman Begins 400.

After enjoying both the race and the film, fans of the Caped CrusaderÔ can also extend their experience in the form of a full line of merchandise being offered by companies such as Mattel and Team Caliber. Both companies, experts in racing-inspired merchandise, are offering a line of die-cast vehicles based on the special Batman Begins paint schemes. Mattel also has a full range of products based on the film including the Batmobile, Batman action figures and playsets.

While this is the first time a major motion picture is serving as the title sponsor of a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race, it is not the first time Warner Bros. Consumer Products has been involved with NASCAR or Michigan International Speedway. Just last August, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Comics partnered with Michigan International Speedway for the highly successful Justice League Racing Weekend Presented by Hot Wheels, as some of NASCAR's top drivers piloted cars emblazoned with the familiar heroes of the Justice League. Adding to the excitement of that weekend was the fact that Roush's Greg Biffle and his super hero counterpart, The Flash took home the checkered flag. NASCAR fans may also remember the ever-popular Looney Tunes programs and paint schemes at both Richmond International Raceway (2001, 2002) and Phoenix International Raceway (2003).

Fans can still purchase tickets to the Batman Begins 400 by calling MIS at 1-800-354-1010 or logging on to www.MISpeedway.com.

FRENAULT UK: Thruxton challenge up next for McIntosh

Vancouver, Canada (April 27, 2005) With a race win to his credit already, Canada's Sean McIntosh heads into the third and fourth rounds of the Formula Renault UK Championship this weekend, Saturday 30th April Sunday 1st May, confident he can build on his early-season succcess, this time at the UK's fastest road course - Thruxton.

The 2.35-mile Hampshire circuit is famed for showcasing flat-out action with Formula Renault competitors set to reach speeds up to 150mph in Saturday and Sunday's 15-lap races. Speed, or the ability to get up to speed quickly, will be a decisive factor this weekend as there are no practice sessions scheduled ahead of Saturday's 20-minute qualifying runs.

Having tested at Thruxton earlier in the month Sean's happy to take on the challenges this weekend presents.

"It's going to be an interesting event tha's for sure," said the 19-year-old Team Firstair racer. "We're straight into qualifying on Saturday and immediately down on track-time as we don't have the luxury of a practice session. I'm confident I can make the most of each session as we've usually been quick straight away whether it's testing or qualifying.

"I enjoy competing at Thruxton because of the unique challenges the track presents, primarily the high speed corners. There are also two major braking points on the circuit and if you get one wrong you'll really hurt your lap time with no chance to recover. It'll be a busy weekend and the pressure is there to get everything working just right from the very first lap in qualifying. As a team though we're confident, we obviously gained a lot from our victory last time out at Donington and we had a good test at Croft last week."

The leader of Beauchamp Motorsports, Ron Beauchamp Sr. is also excited to see Mobil 1 in the CASCAR Super Series. “I’ve been a fan of Mobil 1 for a long time” said the respected engine builder. “We’ve always found the quality to be what we’re looking for in our race engines and I’m glad to see them join the Mopar family.”

Litt is one of very few Canadians who regularly competes with the United States Auto Club (USAC).

In 2004, Ryan started the season off with a USAC Midwest Ford Focus Midget Car feature win at Anderson, Indiana. He then reeled off three runner-up finishes in a row in the next three Midwest division events and led the points until midway through the season, when some bad luck and mechanical troubles slowed him up slightly. Ryan still finished the year with 14 top-10 finishes, seven podium finishes, and third place in the Midwest points standings.

He also took a feature win in the inaugural Ford Focus Midget Oklahoma region event at the Concordia Highbanks Speedway in Kansas last season, and made his debut in a USAC National Sprint Car at the Anderson Speedway in Indiana, and the Nashville Fairgounds Speedway in Tenessee. This season Ryan has his sights set competing in all of the USAC National Sprint Car series events on pavement, and has competed in selected Midget events over the winter during the indoor racing season.

Unfortunately Ryan’s second scheduled National Sprint Car event at the legendary Winchester Speedway in Indiana was cancelled due to a forecast of cold temperatures, rain, and possible snow this past weekend. He’ll next be in action during the four days of festivities at Anderson Speedway which lead up to the famous Little 500 on the Saturday night before the Indianapolis 500.

GRAND AM CUP: J.C. France joins Compass360/Racing's quick youngsters

Toronto-based Compass360/Racing today announced the team's driver line-up for the Grand Am Cup event at Laguna Seca. J.C. France – no stranger to Grand American as the pilot of the #59 Brumos Daytona Prototype – will be sharing the #06 Compass360 BMW Z3 Coupe with team owner (and 2003 Ontario Regional Champion) Karl Thomson. "These BMWs look like they'll be a blast to drive, and I'm looking forward to some good racing in Cup," said France.

"We're really excited to have J.C. join the team," said Thomson. "His experience speaks for itself and we're looking forward to returning the Z3s to the front of the pack."

The team is also continuing their support of young North American racers by fielding two 19-year old Skip Barber scholarship recipients. Billy Johnson, who's recently competed in Formula BMW and Star Mazda joins Chris Wehrheim in the team's #36 Z3. "These two are quick, consistent and have extensive experience at Laguna that'll be a real asset," said Thomson.

"We believe that Grand American is one of the best places for up-and-coming drivers to showcase their talents," added Thomson. "This series is without question the premier venue to launch a solid career in motorsports. Our young drivers for Laguna have proven themselves in open-wheel competition and are now ready to take podium finishes in professional racing."

Compass360/Racing's support of young drivers dates to the team's inaugural year in 2004, where talents like Jody Trudeau and Jeff Hersh helped the team secure an 11th place finish in the GAC championship. In 2005, 23-year old Jeff Wallace, 22-year old Becky Swafford and Tim Hauraney have already been part of the team. Hauraney, in particular, parlayed his drive with Compass360 at Daytona into a ride in a Porsche 911 in the FIA/GT series in Europe.

"We're committed to supporting young drivers through our involvement in Grand Am Cup," said Thomson. "This is a televised pro series that's got a growing fan base and has had explosive increases in its field size, which is exactly what sponsors are looking for. Right now, there's no question that Grand American is the place to be."

Compass360/Racing fields BMW Z3 Coupes (with distinctive opposing blue-and-white livery) in the series, and its cars are currently running seventh and ninth in the championship. The team is supported by sponsors Compass360 Design + Advertising, Hockley Autosport, mmwave Technologies, Burry Signs and Nautical White Yachtwear.

The US Sportscar Invitational at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca takes place April 29-30, 2005, and will be televised tape-delayed on SPEED Channel.

Information on Compass360/Racing is available at the team's web site: http://www.compass360.com/racing or by contacting Team Principal Karl Thomson at (416) 993-3951.

Inside Track RCA's garnering lots of attention!

It appears that the Inside Track Motorsport News Readers’ Choice Awards are taking the racing community by storm, with all kinds of support – both grassroots and not-so-much – being thrown about for various nominees.

The press release below is just one of many that hit the wires since Inside Track made the nominees public a while back.

Don’t forget to vote for whoever you think should win in their respective categories! The results are adding up now, and if things stay as they are now, there could very well be many surprises once the voting closes on June 3! ...MarkA

Vote McIntosh!

By Stuart Morrison
VANCOUVER, BC – Canada’s leading motorsport personalities and their respective 2004 accomplishments are set to be recognized as the May edition of the nation’s premier motorsport publication, Inside Track, has just announced the nominees for the third annual Inside Track Readers’ Choice Awards presented by Castrol.

Sean McIntosh’s impressive performances in the 2004 Formula Renault UK Championship have not gone unnoticed as the 19-year-old Vancouver resident finds himself nominated in the ‘Up and Coming Road Racer of the Year’ category.
On his nomination Sean commented: “I think it’s great that Inside Track allows their readers an opportunity to recognize Canada’s top motorsport personalities and vote, not only for the established guys, but also the younger talents coming up through the ranks on both two wheels and four! As a nation we have a reputation for producing world-class talent and I think the Readers’ Choice Awards gives everyone who’s nominated a further boost as we’ve all had to achieve something significant in the past year just to make the ballot!”

McIntosh’s 2004 achievements followed a switch to European competition with Team Firstair and the ultra-competitive Formula Renault UK Championship. Against a 35-plus field of strong talent, many with several seasons of UK competition behind them, Sean captured the ‘Rookie of the Year’ title, known as the ‘Graduate Cup’ Championship. He also became the first Canadian to ever win a UK Formula Renault race in the process. His victory, along with several podium finishes, powered him to the rookie title and an impressive sixth overall in the championship standings.

A dominant victory in the second round of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship underlined Sean’s status as a title contender as the new season kicked off at Donington Park two weeks ago.

To cast your vote for Sean in the ‘Up and Coming Road Racer of the Year’ category please log on to – www.insidetracknews.com and follow the link to the Readers’ Choice Awards ballot page. Voting closes on the June 3 with the winners announced in a future edition of Inside Track – details to be confirmed.

BARRIE SPEEDWAY: New track a big hit with teams after first practice session

Words by Dave Vokey // Photos by Dave James

ORO, ON - Barrie Speedway debuted its brand new one third mile tri-oval configuration April 17th as drivers from all divisions took to the new asphalt for the season's first practice session.

PHOTO: Tom Walters heads through the tri-oval as he gets a feel for the new track.

Teams spent the day searching for the right setup, with some teams clearly having more success than others. A few drivers found the fast way around the track in a big hurry, while we had a few wasted little time in getting up close and personal with the turn 4 wall. If early indications hold true this new facility should find some great side by side battles with the wider track and the increased banking.

PHOTO: Late Model rookie Joey McColm takes his first laps at Barrie Speedway.

"I really like it -- you can drive the car right into turn 3 using very little braking. We've only had to make some minor adjustments from last year's set up. I was very happy with the car for the first time out" commented Steve Quesnelle, last years Late Model runner-up and 2003 Late Model champion.

"I'm very interested to see the two lane action once a good amount of rubber is down. We need to change some gear ratios but at least I have a starting point to build from" stated veteran Ontario short track star Mark Gordon, who says he plans on returning at least a couple times this season.

PHOTO: Rob James steps up from Thunder Car to Late Model

"Its definitely different from the old Barrie -- guys are really gonna have to find their marks going into turns 1 and 4 especially. It's pretty tight out there -- the action should be great in the early weeks" said track newcomer Joey McColm.

"I think the most important thing I found out there was where you set the car going into turn 4. A lower line meant for a better exit. I was contemplating starting scratch for the first few weeks 'til I get a feel for this place, but with the way the car handled and our increasingly better lap times I think I'll fair just fine out there" remarked Rob James who is making the jump from the Thunder Car ranks to compete in the Late Model division full time in 2005."

"Its a faster track most definitely should make for better racing once the rubber gets layed down out there. I was having a little trouble in turn 1 -- guys are really gonna have to work to find their marks out there" said 2001 Barrie Speedway Thunder Car champion Frank Davey. Frank is returning to Barrie with the sponsorship of Shepherd Trucking on board.

One driver who seemed to have no problem with the set up was defending Late Model champion John Gaunt who ran lap times in the low 15s before blistering off a 14'9 late in the session. Not everyone was as lucky though with the 48 of Dwayne Baker as well as the 47 of Stompin' Tom Walters having brief encounters with the wall between turns 1 and 2.

All in all the reviews seemed very favorable and drivers will have to remain patient while they chase down the best setups for their rides. It promises to be a very exciting season at the new Barrie Speedway! The season opener is slated for April 30 with the green flag dropping at 7pm.

I can't believe what I'm about to say....

Did you every find yourself uttering a phrase that you never, ever thought you would utter?

For example.... "That was a great F1 race on the weekend. And didn't Jacques Villeneuve do an excellent job?!"

I feel like I'm in the Bizarro-World....

IHRA: Billes among winners at Rockingham

From IHRA

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Clay Millican extended his remarkable winning streak at Rockingham Dragway Sunday, getting a free pass to his eighth straight Top Fuel victory at the Carolina track when Tim Cooper was unable to answer the final round call in the 35th annual IHRA Spring Nationals.

Although he was unopposed in the final for the second straight year, the veteran from Drummonds, Tenn., recorded his quickest run of the weekend - 4.667 seconds at 307.02 miles per hour - on his final trip down the quarter mile course.

Other Sunday winners included track record-holder Al Billes of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, who upset No. 1 qualifier Quain Stott of Columbus, S.C., in Pro Modified; Steve Spiess of Manhattan, Ill., who won an all-Chevrolet final in Pro Stock; and Mark Thomas, who earned his third consecutive Spring Nationals title in Funny Car, this one at the expense of Melinda Green-King of Norfolk, Va.

The Top Fuel victory was Millican's 39th in the IHRA series and his second of the current season, but it was anything but routine.

"I love this place," Millican said of the track on which he now has won 24 consecutive rounds of racing. "We had a good day, points-wise, (but) this was a Mike day (a reference to crew chief Mike Kloeber). I literally got to just go down the track.

"We were on some rocket ship rides, but the IHRA is very serious about their oildown penalties so we were very serious about not oiling down the racetrack.

"Steve (Rockingham owner Steve Earwood) may own the deed to this place, but Mike and I have paid a lot of light bills and mortgages. This place is like unbelievable."

Until the semifinals, however, it looked like Cooper's racing teammate, Doug Foley of Sewell, N.J., might end Millican's domination. Foley, who won three times last season, twice beating Millican in the final, qualified No. 1 at 4.657 seconds and, in the first round, virtually duplicated that performance with a time of 4.658.

Nevertheless, his day ended against Cooper when the 7,000 horsepower engine in his hybrid gave up halfway down the racetrack. Cooper didn't get even that far in the final. His car didn't even leave the starting line, duplicating last year's result when local favorite Danny Dunn of Mooresville, N.C., was left sitting at the line.

For Spiess, his second IHRA career victory came on a track that in the past had not treated him kindly. In fact, after earning his first tour victory at Darlington, S.C., in 2000, he came to Rockingham and crashed his car.

"This track has never been really good to me till this year," Spiess said. "I'm happy that Steve fixed the shutdown area. It's a lot more comfortable at the other end. It's a great facility. I love the crowd and everything else about it.

“We gambled this morning," admitted the No. 10 qualifier. "We had been running some new stuff that I thought was good and we went back to the old stuff. I didn't know where the clutch was going to be or nothing. We got lucky. It was very consistent. And fast."

Spiess took out Jerry Haas of Fenton, Mo., in the money round, making the chassis builder a runner-up for the second time in his career, 18 years after he lost to Roy Hill at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio (1987).

Although Billes won for the second straight time at The Rock, building on his victory in last October's World Finals, it was his first IHRA tour victory with engine builder and car owner Jim Oddy as the successor to retired 2000 series champion Fred Hahn.

This one, which came at the expense of No. 1 qualifier Quain Stott of Columbus, S.C., stamped Billes as the favorite to win the 2005 championship, especially in light of the early-season problems encountered by reigning champion Mike Janis of Lancaster, N.Y., who has yet to qualify for a tour event.

Nevertheless, it almost was a lost weekend for the Canadian who, after Friday's qualifying session was rained out, missed the first session on Saturday.

The upshot was that he went into the last qualifying session Saturday not in the 16-car starting lineup.

"We were soft, very soft," Billes said of the setup in the Corvette which is programmed to give way to a new 2005 Dodge Stratus in the near future. "We hoped to run a 6.30 and actually ran a 6.31 (in qualifying). We just wanted to get the car down the racetrack.

"We've had good fortune at this racetrack," Billes continued. "Quain was so consistent and ran so well, but we just kind of stepped up (in the final)."

Thomas made the most of the opportunity he was presented when two-time reigning points champion Rob Atchison, winner of he season-opener at San Antonio, Texas, was beaten in the first round for the second straight year.

"The car's fast," Thomas said, "(and) it's not hurting anything. It was a good weekend for us."

Despite Atchison's problems, Thomas said the points race is far from over. In fact, the five-time former series champion (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 2001) predicted that the new eight-car lineup will make the championship chase a lot more interesting.

"Once you get qualified, the eight-car field is great," he said, "as long as you're one of the eight guys. The only real adjustment you have to make is not chewing your fingers to the bone during qualifying.

"Once race day is here, you've got really tough races every round. I really like it. I think it's neat. Any one of those eight cars can win the whole thing (and) that will make a really interesting year.

"I'll predict that sometime over the course of the year one of the op cars, whether it's me or Rob, will not qualify for a race. Maybe all of us. We've got a lot of good competition (and) I think it's making excellent racing."

Also booted to the sideline early-on, along with Atchison, was No. 1 Pro Stock qualifier and new track record holder Frank Gugliotta of Mt. Airy, Md., whose Ford Mustang slowed by a tenth of a second in a round one win over Larry O'Brien's Dodge Stratus before losing to the Chevrolet of chassis builder Jerry Haas in the quarterfinals.

BARRIE SPEEDWAY: Opener Cancelled... moved to April 30

Welcome to Barrie Speedway: "Season opener postponed to April 30 ....

The weatherman is forecasting extremely bleak conditions throughout the weekend and well into next week, forcing the speedway to push back the season opener one week to April 30.

'Well, we're real disappointed,' lamented Brad Moran, 'but they're calling for rain or snow right into next week. As much as we'd like to go, we really don't want to be chasing the weather the entire night on our season opener. Everyone's been waiting a long time to get out on the new track, and we really want it to be a special night.'

The track staff have been monitoring the weather forecasts closely all week, and as of Friday morning it was apparent that we're in for either a rainy or snowy weekend. Despite their checkered record for accuracy of late, you have to figure that even the weatherman can't be THAT wrong.

The season will get underway next Saturday night. The pits open at 2pm, a little earlier than normal to give everyone extra time to prepare. The spectator gates open at 5:30 with the green flag in the air at 7pm. See you there! "

NASCAR: Edmonton Int’l Raceway joins NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series

EDMONTON, AB – Edmonton International Raceway, a quarter-mile (0.40225 km) asphalt oval located in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, has joined the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series for the 2005 racing season. Edmonton becomes the third Canadian race track to join NASCAR, following Delaware Speedway in Ontario and Autodrome St. Eustache in Quebec, which both joined the series in 2004.

"As we grow NASCAR's international racing programs, the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series has proven to be an excellent fit for our partners in Canada," said Richard Buck, NASCAR Director of Racing Development, Canada. "Edmonton International Raceway is another great addition to the series and we could not be more pleased to add this facility to the NASCAR lineup. Teams and drivers at Edmonton will soon be racing for their first NASCAR championship, and we welcome them to the NASCAR family."

Edmonton International Raceway is one of nine oval tracks in the province of Alberta. The track is located 30 miles (48.2 km) from Edmonton, the sixth-largest city in Canada. The track hosts 10 different racing divisions on Saturday nights. Edmonton’s Late Model class will be NASCAR-sanctioned in 2005, and its drivers will be eligible for the $25,000 (U.S.) NASCAR divisional championship. A total of $1.7 million (U.S.) in point fund awards is distributed to NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series competitors annually.

Beginning in 2005, NASCAR has created a new format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series. Tracks are grouped into one of four divisions – Division I, Division II, Division III and Division IV. Drivers compete for a divisional championship by accumulating championship points at events held at tracks within each division.

Edmonton will be placed in Division II, which also includes Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, Autodrome St. Eustache, Concord Motorsport Park in Concord, N.C., Delaware Speedway, Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., Holland International Speedway in Holland, N.Y., I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H., Lorain Speedway in South Amherst, Ohio, Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., San Antonio Speedway in San Antonio, Texas, Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif., Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y., Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, Calif. and Watsonville Speedway in Watsonville, Calif.

In 2004, NASCAR announced a multi-year operational and marketing agreement with the Canadian Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (CASCAR). NASCAR has also formed NASCAR Canada, a partnership with TSN that established a Canadian base of operation in Toronto, as well as NASCAR Mexico, based in Mexico City. These new offices support local racing and extend the marketing of the sport to borders north and south of the U.S.

NASCAR is the top-rated motorsport on Canadian television, and TSN is the most preferred viewing destination. The Canadian fan base is six million strong with Canadians considered among the most passionate NASCAR fans, according to the 2004 Ipsos-Insight NASCAR Canada Brand Tracker Survey. A significant number of Canadians have attended a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race.

WHITLOCK MOTORSPORTS: Eaton Corporation expands relationship with Whitlock Motorsports

WYOMING, ON – Dave Whitlock plans to have another great season this year, but the three-time CASCAR National Champion is dead serious about adding a fourth Series title to his resume.

"Somebody needs to stop the recent stranglehold that Don Thomson Jr. has on winning Championships - and it needs to be my new Dodge Charger" said Whitlock enthusiastically.

"We and several other teams had a good enough season in 04 to win a Championship almost any other year. Drivers keep getting better and the racing gets tighter. I’m not saying it will be easy but we’ll be doing whatever we can to win that Championship, it will be our focus every lap. We’ve stepped up our motor program again this year to ensure we will be as competitive as anyone and have a new road course car. So we’re going to combine all of that to do the best we can for our sponsors and the fans."

Avenue Motor Works returns as primary sponsor of Whitlock’s new #39 Dodge Charger. John and Diane from Avenue ‘would like to wish Dave and the whole Avenue crew a safe and exciting season and look forward to watching the "Ultimate Parts Machine" burn up the track in 2005’.

Nitrex Metal Technologies also returns for the third season. NMT’s Dave Orosz says, "We’re thrilled to again be supporting Dave and to be involved with one of the finest teams in CASCAR. We wish him well and look forward to his Championship drive this year".

"Whitlock Motorsports is pleased to announce association with Eaton Corporation as proud sponsor of Dave Whitlock's #39 Dodge Charger" says Don Brooks of Whitlock Motorsports. Dave is a big fan of Eaton's high performance products and Whitlock Motorsports uses Eaton's hose and fittings products on all of its racing cars.

"Our relationship with Eaton goes back a few years" said Brooks, "and we're really excited about this new partnership. Whitlock Motorsports will be expanding their support of Eaton's retail distributors with displays at Eaton's Aeroquip Express and Weatherhead Port-to-Port retail store and van openings."

"This is a great opportunity to marry CASCAR and the value added services offered by Eaton's hose centers and vans," says Scott Pharis, Manager of Distributor Programs for Eaton.

Eaton Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturer with 2004 sales of $9.8 billion. Eaton is a global leader in fluid power systems and services for industrial, mobile and aircraft equipment; electrical systems and components for power quality, distribution and control; automotive engine air management systems, powertrain solutions and specialty controls for performance, fuel economy and safety; and intelligent truck drivetrain systems for safety and fuel economy. Eaton has 55,000 employees and sells products to customers in more than 125 countries. For more information, visit www.eaton.com.

Whitlock Motorsports could not function without our Product & Service Associates, whom we always acknowledge for their valued support. We again thank the following: BOC Gases, CRS Trucking, City Automotive, Glassford Chrysler, Hawk Performance, LUGFASTS, NTech Web Design, Power Water, and ShawnLee Corporation.

The first event on the 2005 CASCAR Super Series is the annual Mopar 250 on May 22 at Delaware Speedway near London ON. That race will mark the second anniversary of Whitlock’s long awaited first-ever Series win at his home track, and also his first race in a Dodge. Last year Whitlock started on the front row, led many laps, and finished fifth after his charge back to the front was hampered by a long late-race caution period. A repeat in Victory Lane this year would be again memorable as that event marks the debut of the new CASCAR Dodge Chargers.

DIRT MOTORSPORTS: Johnson stripped of win

By DIRT MotorSports PR

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. – Alan Johnson was the first driver to take the checkered flag in the 2005 DIRT Modified season-opener at Fulton Speedway on April 16.

Four days later, race runner-up Pat Ward was officially credited with the feature win in Fulton's 8th Annual Showdown at Sundown after Johnson's car was deemed underweight.

"I promised the teams equal treatment," stated Martin Willis, DIRT MotorSports™ V.P. Technical Operations, "and applying the rules per the rulebook is the only fair and equal way I know how to do it. There may be one upset team, but the other way you have twenty plus upset teams. I feel there was a little confusion on the official weight, but once the error was realized, it was rectified in a very professional manner. Our experience is, Fulton is and always will be a fair place to race under DIRT rules."

Since Johnson posted the convincing victory, a number of protests were lodged soonafter concerning the weight of the car, which was 2438 track scale pounds. Fulton promoter Harvey Fink was under the impression that the old weight rule used by DIRT in the past was still in effect, thus allowing the win to stand at that time and overruling the DIRT tech inspectors at the track.

In the days immediately following the event, additional protests were filed with the DIRT MotorSports™ offices in Colorado. Fink was informed about the old weight rules that were no longer in effect and that the 2005 minimum weight is 2450 pounds for a DIRT legal small-block in competition with big-blocks that weigh in at 2500 pounds.

"Due to this infraction it is DIRT’s ruling that the win be credited to the second place finisher, Pat Ward, and that Alan be placed and pointed last along with a handicap for the win," Willis said. "All other drivers will be moved up one position in points for that event. Harvey is taking full responsibility for his actions and has offered that Johnson keep the purse money for the event. Our own staff regrets any misunderstanding although DIRT had no option but to overturn the original result. By following the rules set down by DIRT MotorSports, Fulton Speedway is and will remain a fair and just place to race."

With Johnson's apparent win in the caution free 45-lap DIRT Modified main now scratched, the battle of the race for second position between open-wheel veterans Ward and Danny Johnson ultimately turned out to be for victory. Tim McCreadie, Matt Sheppard and Justin Haers completed the revised top-five feature finishers while Tim Fuller, Gary Tomkins, Tom Sears, Billy Decker and Jeff Rudalavage, Johnson's car owner, filled out the new top-10.
