COLUMN: Montreal set to welcome NASCAR

Montreal Gazette writer Jack Todd compares last weekend's F1 show to "lawn bowling". Ouch.

Bring on NASCAR. After watching yet another Formula One grand prix grind to a finish as predictable as sunrise, we're ready to give the good ol' boys a whirl.

and

Let's face it: the Formula One grand prix in its current guise is over-sold, over-hyped, over-priced and, for this year at least, just plain over. It is not competitive, there are too few real battles on the track, overtaking is as rare as ice storms in June and the drama, or what there is of it, comes down to pitstop strategy and breakdowns.
And yet the crowds come out: 103,000 for practice Friday, 110,000 for qualifying, 119,000 for the race, a weekend total of 332,000. Like everyone else, I get up and watch the F1 race pretty much every other Sunday during the season. Because it's my job, but also because I do enjoy it for some perverse reason and I cover the race year after year.
The question is why. The world's finest cars, the world's greatest drivers and a spectacle that rates somewhere between the senior badminton tour and lawn bowling.
