OILERS HEAD COACH MACTAVISH NAMED GRAND MARSHALL OF 2006 WEST EDMONTON MALL GRAND PRIX PRESENTED BY THE BRICK EDMONTON

July 13, 2006 – Edmonton Oilers head coach, Craig MacTavish will serve as Grand Marshall of the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix Presented by The Brick. The announcement was made today by event General Manager, Ernie Pasemko.

“We’re delighted that Craig, the guiding force behind the Edmonton Oilers meteoric rise to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final has agreed to join the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix Presented by The Brick, as Grand Marshall,” said Pasemko. “Hockey fans were captivated this Spring by the Oilers thrilling performance and cheered them on as they outplayed their competition en route to the final round of the NHL playoffs. Craig MacTavish’s role in this success is immeasurable.”

One of the most popular players in Oilers’ history, MacTavish was named the Club’s eighth Head Coach on June 22, 2000. “This is an opportunity that every sports fan dreams of,” said MacTavish. “It will be a privilege to step up to the microphone and kick off the race. It's going to be a great weekend of racing, and I can't wait for it to start.”

MacTavish has a record of 190-139-47-34 in his six seasons behind the Oilers bench. He has guided the club to the playoffs on three occasions, including the 2006 Western Conference Championship. Prior to taking the reins of the Oilers, MacTavish was an assistant coach with both the Oilers and New York Rangers.

His 17-year playing career in the NHL included nine seasons in Edmonton where he was a member of the 1987, 1988 and 1990 Stanley Cup Championship teams. He also served as the Oilers Captain during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. MacTavish won a fourth Stanley Cup as a player as a member of the New York Rangers.
