The first day of competition is in the books! It was a wild first day, with many off track excursions and mechanical failures. Lucky the Team TARGA Corvette did not experience any of these unfortunate situations, as the car was working perfectly.
Both Mark Swain (driver) and Mike Bell (navigator) are very pleased to announce that they are currently the leaders in their class by 2 seconds. This is a lead they will try to extend in the following 4 days of competition. The 4-wheel drive Subaru team of Keith Townsend and Jen Horsey, are trailing Swain and Bell, and putting up a good fight for the finish.
The day consisted of 7 competitive stages along the Avalon Peninsula. Ending with a fantastic in town stage through the Gander community. This proved to be a critical run in the event and Mark and Mike were ready for the challenge. Unfortunately, Ernie Jakubowski and Stan Carmichael racing the Porsche Cayman, who were very strong competitors, were forced to withdraw from the event after sustaining irreparable damages during the final stage of the day.
Team TARGA Corvette achieved the top speed through the radar trap during the long straightaway in the Gander stage of the event, proving it once again to be one of the fastest cars in the event (almost a full 10km/h faster then the next car!).
The team is keeping a watchful eye on the approaching hurricane Florence, and hope that the heavy rainfall that is predicted does not put their rear wheel drive car at a disadvantage. Team TARGA Corvette would like to thank:
