TARGA Newfoundland 2006 Comes to a Close with Swain and Bell Clinching a Podium Finish

The last day of the TARGA Newfoundland 2006 Road Rally Race was definitely the most challenging one of the event. The 10 competitive stages scheduled for the day included both tight in town sections separated by long fast runs, and Team TARGA Corvette was in its element.

The day began with Mark Swain (driver) and Mike Bell (navigator) leading the pack with a narrow 2-second lead over the Subaru WRX. Swain and Bell in the yellow Corvette were gaining momentum on their competitors throughout the morning. The car was working perfectly as the team extended their lead by another 10 seconds in the morning.

Just before lunch in Upper Island Cove (home of Craig Sharp from Canadian Idol), the team approached a slow junction in the road where the course marking tape was torn down and blowing across the proper course. Turning around and getting back on track cost Team TARGA Corvette their lead. After a quick mechanical check at the lunch stop the boys were able to refocus and ran the remainder of the event without any further incident. The day ended as the car was brought to the waterfront in St. John’s Newfoundland for a ceremonial finish. After a relatively hard week on the road the Corvette is no worse for wear.

Mark Swain and Mike Bell finished 2nd in their class in the TARGA Newfoundland 2006 road rally race. Congratulations to Keith Townsend and Jen Horsey on their 1st place finish, they were great competitors throughout the week, and we look forward to challenging them again.

Team TARGA Corvette would like to thank all of the volunteers, organizers, marshals, and spectators for their support throughout the week. We would also like to thank the members of Team TARGA Corvette: Michele Bell, Lindsay Gurr, Stephen and Melissa Johnson, David and Margaret Swain and Paul Swain. Without your help this event would not have been possible.
