My main reaction today was a sense of relief for the drivers. The racers, their teams and the existing sponsors are primarily responsible for getting CASCAR to the starting line (today). We owe them all a debt of gratitude for projecting such a professional image and producing incredible racing, during financially difficult times.
Who would have thought a Canadian homegrown series would attract the attention of NASCAR... and that they would place their stamp of approval on CASCAR by hanging their golden name on it? That is the biggest tribute of all.
Over the past few months and weeks, when we knew that something like this was in the works, I'll have to admit that it was a little bit frustrating not to be 'in the loop'. I would imagine that the drivers, sponsors and owners who have invested so much money in the sport were 10-times more frustrated than I. And I don't blame them for that.
But the bottom line is that Canadian Tire wanted it to be a secret. And to their credit, the people they charged with keeping that secret, didn't let them down.
As I sit here tonight, I don't care about that anymore.
All I care about is the future. In the past few years, we've seen GM walk away from the sport, and Ford chased from it. In my opinion, the ISA disaster hung over Canadian motorsport until 10:59 a.m. this morning.
But now, the darkness is lifting. We made it. The CASCAR community - the drivers, teams, tracks, sponsors, fans and associated businesses - have weathered the storm and the sun is rising.
By changing the first "C" in CASCAR into an "N", doors that have long been slammed in the faces of those looking for sponsorship.... will open.
As someone with a business that has featured CASCAR and Canadian racing, I have never been so excited about the future.
