WOLLABER, PENNELL, SHEPKER, SCOTT, AND AGEN PICK UP FIRST WINS OF THE YEAR AT LANCASTER

By Dave Buchanan

Race fans were treated to a “monster” of a program Saturday night at the Lancaster Raceway Park with a special monster truck show in the infield along with a great night of racing presented by Stockmohr Roofing and Siding.

The Advance Auto Parts Modified feature was three-car war for the entire 30-lap distance. Dave Wollaber and Sege Fidanza started on the front row for the race, which saw a caution flag before the first lap was completed. Fidanza made contact with Tim Mangus on the opening lap, which bottled up the field as Billy Putney and Bill Mislin collided and slide into the infield on the backstretch.

When racing resumed Wollaber, Fidanza, and Tom McGrath hooked up and checked out from the rest of the field. The trio ran lined up single file for almost the rest of the way, as the race would not see a second caution period. Fidanza wanted to challenge Wollaber for the lead but he knew if he left the inside groove open McGrath would take advantage.

Fidanza made one serious attempt with five laps to go but couldn’t hang on heading into turn one. He tucked back line as Wollaber drove to the checkered flag for his first win of the year followed by Fidanza and McGrath. Lee Sherwood held off Karl Hehr for the fourth spot while Tim Mangus finished sixth.

Lancaster played host to round three of the Lancaster/Holland Late Model Challenge Series as Holland gave its drivers the night off to compete in the event. Mark Pennell started on the pole and led all 25 laps for his first win of the year and becomes the third different driver to win a series race this year.

Todd Hoddick would get by Vern Bliss on the final lap to secure the second spot. Bliss’s third place run snapped was the first time in his last three starts at Lancaster that he didn’t win. Ron Nurmi beat out Joe Carbone for fourth as the pair entered the evening separated by two points for the Lancaster track points lead.

There was another strong showing of Signworks SST Modifieds with 18 cars pitside. Justin Shepker would lead 17 of the feature’s 20 laps for his first win of the year. Shepker had to contend with Bill Hebing and Bobby Holmes on his coattails as he raced to the checkered flag. Russ Gian and Don Wylie completed the top five.

Sophomore driver, Mike Scott, led 19 out of 20 laps in the Probity Construction Super Stock feature. Scott won by a large margin ahead of second place Jay Mudra. Doug Evans would go on to finish third just ahead of Wayne Bernhard and Paul Alberti.

Tom Agen tasted victory in the Glen Campbell Chevrolet Street Stocks as he led all 15 laps of the feature. Agen was the tops in a season-high field of 32 Street Stocks as the division continues to get bigger each week. Jim Offhaus would finish a close second, while Mike McDonald, Joe Mergl, and Russell Knutsen came home with top five finishes.

Next week, June 18, at LRP it’s the annual Bud 50 for the mighty Modifieds. It’s the first of LRP’s annual four extra-distance Modified event. There’s also double Late Model feature on the card plus the Super Stocks and Street Stocks. Racing starts at 6:30 PM.
