CASCAR POWER WATER SERIES: Kitchener’s Shawn McGlynn Plans to Run for Title

KITCHENER, ON – This weekend, Kitchener’s Shawn McGlynn will be heading to the half-mile oval at Mosport Speedway for what he and his teammates hope will be a strong performance in CASCAR’s Sportsman Series opener.

The event is the first of six the veteran campaigner plans to run in his immaculately prepared #81 Ford Taurus still noticeably bare of a title and associate sponsor identities.

“After a great testing session at Mosport earlier this season, I feel we have a better chance at capturing the pole for the first PowerWater series race,” the older of two racing brothers remarked with a display of determination at the prospects of qualifying for the event. “This year McGlynn Racing is better prepared for race day than ever before and I believe our effort will pay off when the green flag drops. I would love to win a race this year but our focus is the championship and as the saying goes, in order to finish first, first you must finish”.

In addition to his on-track schedule, McGlynn also plans to have his road course car on display at Mosport where fans can get a close-up look at the car, have their photos taken, obtain Shawn’s autograph and get some free handouts. He’s also hoping it will attract some sponsor interest.

The cost of competing in the series is conservatively estimated at $40,000 when competition, repair and travel expenses are factored in the budget. In order to attract some interest, the team is also offering a one event trail sponsorship package for business wanting to “test the waters” before committing to a full season sponsorship program.

2005 marks the 19th season of stock car racing competition for the 36 year-old Kitchener native but it will be his first as a regular in the CASCAR Power Water Sportsman Series.

How does he see his chance of vying for the championship shape up as the season begins?

“A lot will depend on the intentions of last year’s champion Brad Graham of Glencoe, Ontario and runners-up Jason Hathaway of Appin, Ontario and Andre Coursol of St. Antoine, Quebec,” noted McGlynn. “ They aren’t listed in the current CASCAR Sportsman driver roster and there have been no official comments from either the 4th-place finisher Mike Hyrniuk of LaSalle or Steve Munro of the Ottawa Valley confirming their intentions of returning to contest the championship.”

It could be a wide open contest to see who battles their way to the top in this popular stock car racing series.

Following the Mosport event, the six race CASCAR Sportsman Series, sponsored by Power Water and its promotional partner Steam Whistle, moves on to Barrie Speedway for a Canada Day double header weekend with CASCAR’s national touring Super Series.
