Thompson takes Shouldice ALSTAR win at Sunset SpeedwaySTROUD, ON – Reigning Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series champion Robbie Thompson dominated Saturday night’s ALSTAR race at Sunset Speedway. The Shear Metal Products / Logel’s Dodge driver won a heat race, started on the pole for the feature, and led all 75 laps around the Barrie-area oval en route to the victory. Finishing second was Kirk Hooker, of Chatham, ON. The driver of the Country View Golf Course / McColl’s Racing Chevy started fourth in the field of 22 starters and quickly jumped two positions, to second place. The veteran ALSTAR competitor had to settle for the runner-up position, however, as he was unable to wrestle the top spot from Thompson over the remaining laps.
Derrick Tiemersma, driver of the Wayfreight / Gates / Wix / Chevrolet, claimed the final podium spot. The Newmarket, ON racer started 15th at Sunset and charged to third by lap 75. Tiemersma’s result came on the heels of his run to second place – from 20th on the grid – in the season-opener at Sauble two weeks earlier.
The race was slowed by 10 cautions, although the majority of them came in clusters as a result of attempted restarts. The first yellow flag emerged on lap 1, and saw a full restart take place. A caution-free stretch between laps 18 and 53 produced the best action of the event. Eleven cars completed the entire 75 race distance.
Heat race wins, prior to the feature, went to: Robbie Thompson, Jason Shaw, Alan Inglis, Dan Delisle, Derrick Tiemersma and Glenn Watson.
The next Shouldice ALSTAR Series race takes place on Saturday, June 11 at Mosport Speedway, which is located north of Bowmanville, ON.
