SHOULDICE ALSTAR: Mosport Summary & Results

Hooker holds off Thompson in ALSTAR thriller at Mosport

BOWMANVILLE, ON – The Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series made its lone visit of the season to Mosport Speedway on Saturday night. When the 75-lap feature race was finished, Kirk Hooker was in victory lane after surviving a relentless attack from reigning series champion Robbie Thompson for the final 20 laps.

Hooker’s win was the fourth ALSTAR victory of his career, and the first one not to take place at Peterborough Speedway. The Country View Golf Course Chevy driver, who hails from Chatham, ON, started ninth and climbed to second in the field of 20 starters by lap 20 and immediately started to challenge Chris Morrow for the top spot. A half-dozen laps later, Hooker worked his way past the Morrow Electric Chevy racer and into the lead.

With 20 laps remaining, Hooker led hometrack favourite Kyle Donaldson (Custom Engines Ford), Glenn Watson (Racing-Radios Chevy) and the hard-charging Robbie Thompson, who battled back into contention after an early-race pit stop, which sent him to the back of the pack on lap 25.

Just a handful of laps later, Thompson’s SMP / Logel’s Dodge was into second and it was all that Hooker could do to keep the Southampton, ON driver behind him. Over the closing laps, Thompson searched high and low for a way past Hooker, and even gave him a few taps on the rear bumper, but to no avail.

At the finish, Hooker earned the win and moved to second place in the Shouldice Stone ALSTAR points. “We’re really happy,” said Hooker, after the race. “We didn’t have the fastest car, but I know I had the widest racecar out there tonight. Robbie raced me really clean and I appreciate that.”

Runner-up finisher Thompson was pleased with his result, after starting 14th and going to the back early. “Kirk is a great racer. We came a long way back and came up one position short, which isn’t too bad.”

Third-place went to Derrick Tiemersma, for the second week in a row. Following three races, the Wayfreight Chevy driver from Newmarket, ON has finished on the podium in all three events and leads the Shouldice ALSTAR points chase heading to Race #4 next Saturday night (June 18) at the newly-configured Barrie Speedway. Tiemersma’s climb from 17th to third earned him the “Hard Charger Award” for the third time in as many races.

The Mosport race was slowed by five cautions and took just 40 minutes to complete all 75 laps at the half-mile speedway. During qualifying for the 75-lap feature race at Mosport, reigning series champ Robbie Thompson won a pair of heats, while single checkered flags went to Jason Shaw and Kyle Donaldson.
