Smart Begins Taking Fortwo Reservations From U.S. Customers

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — In what appears to be one of the more clever ways to create buzz for a new vehicle, Smart USA on Monday started taking reservations from U.S. buyers for the Fortwo model that will hit showrooms early next year. Buyers can pick out the trim level and color preference for the subcompact.

Smart USA said the $99 fee will be applied to the purchase of the Fortwo. Choices include the entry-level Fortwo pure, which starts at under $12,000, the Fortwo passion coupe, which starts at under $14,000, and the Fortwo passion cabriolet, which starts at under $17,000.

Details on the trim levels and colors are available at the Smart USA Web site. The fine print in the statement by Smart USA about the reservation process says: "Actual results may vary materially because of risks and uncertainties, including production delays, delays in developing a dealership network, and external factors such as interest-rate fluctuations, changes in consumer spending and other factors over which management has no control."

Smart said it will launch a 44-city road show tour later this year that will feature test drives of the Fortwo.
