Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss

British legend's name given to final editions of the SLR supercar. Mercedes-Benz has revealed details of an exclusive SLR inspired by British motor racing legend, Stirling Moss. Only 75 will be made, each costing €750,000 (£710,810).

The SLR Stirling Moss is a roofless and windowless version of the Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster, featuring a supercharged, 5,439cc V8 engine developing 650bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in less than 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 217mph.

Moss won many racers for Mercedes in its SLR racers during the 1950s and this tribute to his sublime skills recalls the sleek 300 SLR in which he and Denis Jenkinson famously won the 1955 Mille Miglia road race in Italy during a record-breaking drive from Brescia to Rome and back. The pair’s average speed was almost 98mph.

Like the series production SLR, the bodywork is made from carbon-fibre, with the bonnet continuing into the passenger compartment. Minuscule wind deflectors protect the two occupants from the airflow, while air scoops integrated into the bodywork behind the seats serve as roll-over bars. The SLR Stirling Moss also has a larger rear diffuser than that fitted to the SLR Coupe and Roadster.

There’s also an airbrake to aid deceleration from high speeds, which deploys during heavy braking from speeds above 75mph.

The minimalist interior features carbon-fibre, aluminium-alloy and fine leather, with an aluminium-alloy plate engraved with Moss’s signature situated by the gearlever.

Production of the SLR Stirling Moss will begin in June 2009, when the standard SLR ceases production, and the run of 75 examples is expected to be completed by next December.

2009 Scion xD

All three cars in the Scion lineup are sort of deceptive. From a distance, each seems like nothing more than an economy car with a little added exterior style. But look a little closer and it quickly becomes clear that each Scion is surprisingly comfortable, with a nicely assembled interior plus lots of standard and optional equipment.

2009 Scion xD-12009 Scion xD-2The 2009 Scion xD is the perfect poster child for the whole lineup, as it's both inexpensive and reasonably refined. This subcompact hatchback distinguishes itself with a lengthy list of standard equipment and dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options, proving Scion totally understands its customers.

While other automakers have made only auxiliary input jacks standard equipment, Scion has gone one step further with a regular aux jack and a dedicated iPod port that provides power and stereo head unit control. The xD is also one of the least expensive vehicles to currently offer an integrated navigation system.

As expected, the Scion xD delivers good fuel economy but still has adequate power. Even on the highway, the four-cylinder engine isn't excessively rev-happy. If you're about 6 feet tall or more, you might find the xD's interior a little cozy. Lack of legroom is the main problem, but the car can feel narrow, too.

Scion vehicles, with their gen-Y styling, are clearly aimed at younger buyers. However, you'll frequently find retirees driving Scions, as their value is undeniable -- the secret that they are basically low-priced Toyotas is out. Depending on use and personal preference, however, there are a few economy cars that come off a little better than the 2009 Scion xD. Nissan's Versa is roomier inside, the Honda Fit is a better all-around package and the often-overlooked Hyundai Accent has been a longtime favorite of ours.

Motivated by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, the xD has adequate output for its class. Estimated fuel economy is a competitive 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined with the five-speed manual and 26/32/28 mpg with the four-speed automatic. In our testing, an xD with the manual went from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

(from Mercedes-Benz Press Release) Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are adding the crowning glory to the model family of their highly successful SLR super sports car with a new, uncompromisingly spectacular car. There is neither a roof nor a windscreen to separate the driver and passenger from the outside world; they enjoy unadulterated high-speed excitement with all the attributes of a speedster. The new SLR Stirling Moss is also characterised by the most sophisticated technology and a breathtaking design which reinterprets the SLR legend. With 478 kW/650 hp the SLR Stirling Moss accelerates its V8 supercharged engine from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 350 km/h - no other series-production car is at the same time so open and so fast.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling MossThis extreme concept makes the new high-performance sports car a legitimate bearer of the name of the British motor racing legend and Mille Miglia record-holder Stirling Moss, who drove the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLR racing cars from victory to victory in 1955. The exclusive SLR Stirling Moss rounds off the current SLR family and is limited to 75 units. It is priced at 750,000 euros. The SLR Roadster will cease to be manufactured at the end of May 2009 as planned, and production of the SLR Stirling Moss will commence in June 2009.

Three letters are all it takes to make car fans hearts beat faster: SLR. In the 1950s the Mercedes-Benz SLR 300 celebrated victory after victory. It won the Mille Miglia, the Eifel race, the Targa Florio as well as the Tourist Trophy. It was driven by the stars of the time: Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling - and, first and foremost, by the British racing driver Stirling Moss. At ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds he still holds the Mille Miglia record.

This is why the modern-day version of the legendary SLR carries the additional words Stirling Moss in its name. As the new SLR Stirling Moss unites the character of the current SLR models with the fascination of the SLR of 1955. The core values of both the historical and the present-day SLR models include an exciting new design, innovative technology, high-class materials displaying perfect craftsmanship, and, above all: a unique driving experience for all the senses.

Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concepts in Detroit

Mercedes-Benz has released images and information on three concepts in what it calls ‘electromobility’ that it will show at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The German company says the concepts are based on a single vehicle architecture, which it says is an intelligent, modular concept that allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility.

Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concept-1Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concept-2The concepts are: the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone; the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

Mercedes-Benz says the three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems. Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody.

The five-seater BlueZERO concept cars also set standards in terms of lightweight design, interior layout and body form. The company says all three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical. Measuring just 4.22 metres in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment.

Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 litres make for outstanding everyday practicality. All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

Bentley Continental GTC offroad in sand dunes – video

We would never have thought to use a supercar sedan for a romp among the sand dunes, but in this video you will find the off-road qualities of the Bentley Continental GTC clearly on display. The Bentley in the sand dunes doesn’t appear to have too much difficulty, though it’s a rather strange way to enjoy a cabriolet that costs 210,000 euros.

2010 Mercedes Benz R-Class facelift

Sales figures for the R-Class haven’t managed to live up to the expectations of the German luxury brand, but Mercedes Benz is determined not to completely write-off its ‘Grand Sport Tourer’ just yet. The R-Class received a mild facelift last year to help turnaround flagging sales, but a second and more extensive update is in fact planned for the 2010 model year as previewed by these latest spy shots of a prototype caught testing in Germany.

2010 Mercedes Benz R-Class-12010 Mercedes Benz R-Class-2The first facelift came less than two years after the vehicle was first shown at 2005’s New York Auto Show, and was implemented mainly to increase the car’s desirability. A cheaper RWD model was added to the lineup as well as a more flexible seven-seater model, but other than that the car remained mostly unchanged.

For the next update Mercedes will give the car a major styling overhaul with a new front-end planned as well as a slightly revised rear and interior. Expected to be launched in the second half of next year, the new R-Class will likely receive the same squared-off treatment as the rest of the Mercedes lineup including angular headlights and a larger more prominent grille.

Honda cancels development of V10-powered NSX successor

Amid the announcement of its third profit warning of the year, Honda has confirmed that it has canceled plans for the launch of a successor to the NSX supercar. The new V10-powered model was expected to arrive in the United States next year as an Acura, but sadly all development work on the car has come to an end. Honda CEO Takeo Fukui confirmed the plan in his end of year speech, saying that all development of the car would cease. Fukui also revealed that plans to introduce the Acura brand to Japan in 2010 have all been canned, reports Automotive News.

Honda The news comes less than two weeks after Honda announced that it planned to pull out of next year’s Formula One season, citing financial constraints as the main reason. Honda also announced today that it is lowering its annual operating profit forecast by 67% - its third profit warning of the year. The carmaker now expects its operating profit for the business year to March 31 to be $2 billion - down 81% from last year.

Instead, Honda will focus on developing more fuel-efficient hybrid and diesel models, especially in the compact car segments. Plans for a minicar positioned below the Fit (Jazz) are still on track, as are plans for the CR-Z hybrid sports car.

In this video you can see the iQ in parking action with even a little stunt move at the end. Whether you will actually be allowed to park you car like this is probably superfluous in the end - whoever gives you a fine, it will only be because they’re jealous.

1,104 hp Zenvo ST1 Danish supercar

Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of supercars created by small companies, but this definitely is one of the most interesting we’ve seen lately. Created by the Danish startup company Zenvo Automotive, the Zenvo ST1 is a rear wheel drive supercar powered by a turbocharged and supercharged 7.0 liter V8 engine delivering an whooping 1,104 hp. Yup, no typos there, 1,104 hp. With the engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the ST1 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 375 km/h (233 mph).

1,104 hp Zenvo ST1 -11,104 hp Zenvo ST1 -2And if that’s not impressive enough, the car also looks extremely attractive, with polished stainless steel exhaust outlets, carbon-fiber body panels, light tinted glass, forged aluminum wheels (19 inch front and 20 rear) and the mettalic paint.

According to Zenvo, the ST1 has been in development since 2004 and they hope the first customers will get their cars next year. Though no mention on the pricing, one thing’s for sure, those will be some really lucky customers.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

There aren't many heavy-duty pickups to choose from. There are four to be exact, and even then, two of them are virtual clones of each other. However, competition remains fierce in this small group, as each battles for the hard-earned dollars of truck-buying folks and their businesses. One such truck is the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, which, together with its GMC clone, is the most recently redesigned and appealing member of this exclusive 3/4-ton class. Specifically, the Chevy provides superior vehicle control and top-notch interior quality to go along with the type of prolific hauling and towing capabilities one expects from such a workhorse truck.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD-12009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD-2Changes are light for the '09 Silverado 2500, with only a few trim and equipment updates for the new model year. The rest of the truck remains unchanged from its total overhaul two years ago that debuted new styling, a dramatically improved interior, better vehicle control and handling, a more powerful engine lineup, a stronger frame and the resulting higher payload and towing capacities. This is a truck that'll get the job done and keep you comfortable while doing it.

Whether you opt for the Silverado HD or its GMC Sierra twin, you can't go wrong with these heavy-duty trucks. The Ford F-250 is its closest competitor, but the GM trucks offer a bit more hauling and towing ability and arguably a better interior (particularly with the LTZ trim). The Dodge Ram 2500 is also available, offering nearly equal towing ability and ride comfort, but it is getting along in years and will soon be replaced with an all-new model. It can't match the Chevy's towing capacity, cargo bed configurations or interior quality. That leaves the Chevy as your best bet, but since brand loyalty is so vitally important when it comes to pickups, we're guessing that gold bow tie should be reason enough for many buyers.

The standard engine in the Chevy Silverado 2500 is a 6.0-liter gasoline-fueled V8 making 353 horsepower and 373 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. Optional is a 6.6-liter turbodiesel Duramax V8 that boasts 365 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. It gets a different six-speed automatic and is the go-to choice if you require a burly tow vehicle (it also gets better fuel economy). Properly equipped, the 2500HD can haul up to 3,458 pounds and tow up to 13,000 pounds.

Rear-wheel drive is standard across the board, with four-wheel drive optional. Although the Work Truck 4WD gets a traditional floor-mounted transfer case, the two other trim levels available on the Silverado 4WD get Autotrac, a knob-controlled electric transfer case that features an automatic setting that engages 4WD when wheel slippage is detected.

2009 Volvo S60 Concept

(from Volvo Press Release) An early Christmas present from Volvo Cars - a glimpse of the next-generation Volvo S60

2009 Volvo S60 Concept-12009 Volvo S60 Concept-2A few days before Christmas, Volvo Cars treats the automotive world to an early unwrapping of a car that will shine bright in the streets for years to come. The Volvo S60 Concept gives the car world a glimpse of what the all-new Volvo S60 is going to look like when it arrives in 2010. The coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 its characteristic stance are even more pronounced in the next generation.

"The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car's technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver," says Stephen Odell. The concept car reveals that the Volvo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products' DNA.

"The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

The engine that Volvo Cars has chosen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure. The engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

Subaru Legacy Concept to debut next month in Detroit

The 2009 North American International Auto Show will mark the debut of the Subaru Legacy Concept, a vehicle which has two purposes: one is to celebrate 20 years since the Legacy was introduced for the first time and second is to preview the Japanese carmaker’s next generation midsize sedan, which is scheduled to debut in early 2010.

Subaru Legacy ConceptUnfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the show to get more details on the car, because all we have so far is this teaser photo and some rumors that a new 3.6-liter flat-6 engine will power the car.

HSV W427 - 200 vehicle build cap

Holden Special Vehicles has today confirmed that it will cap the production of the HSV W427 at 200 vehicles - and the final number will be determined when last orders are taken in June next year. The $155,000 HSV is the most expensive HSV ever. Packing a 7.0-litre LS7 V8 engine, HSV claims it sprints from 0-100km/h in the mid four-second barrier, making it an ultra-fast Aussie hauler.

HSV W427-1HSV W427-2HSV Managing Director, Phil Harding said “The W427 program has been a great success, ahead of target and ahead of plan.”

The final W427 will roll off the production line in the latter part of 2009, prompting HSV to remind potential purchasers to place orders quickly for this very limited edition HSV.

“Existing W427 customers have told us they want to keep their purchase as exclusive as possible and some potential customers have asked us for clarification on exactly how many W427 Supercars we intend to build,” Mr Harding said.

HSV says 96 cars have so far been built and about another 40 orders, the car is only confirmed for construction when a retail customer places a confirmed order, are on hand, which leaves about 60 places in the order book for the remaining cars.

So if you’re intending on sinking $155,000 into a HSV, join the queue quickly!

STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black

Many people find Hummer vehicles as being too big, too thirsty and too damaging from an environmental point of view - and they're all probably right. However, if there's one positive thing that can be said about Hummer's off-road models that has to be their communicative and distinct styling which sets them apart from anything else you see on the road. Even better when the color of choice is a matte-black like the one on this heavily customized H2 show car that is scheduled to be featured in both DUB and Truckin' Magazines in 2009.

STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black-1STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black-2Aside from the cool paint job, the blacked-out H2 also features an array of accessories such as flat black 24-inch alloy wheels, a STRUT body kit, chipped engine, upgraded suspension and even a 'grenade' like shifter.

The overall cost of the custom work performed on the H2 is said to be valued in excess of $60,000 - and that does not include the price of the vehicle itself of course.

Aston Martin Vantage 4.3-litre

Following the launch of the new 4.7-litre V8 Vantage, Aston Martin has introduced a retrospective-fit power enhancement and Sports Pack option for owners of the original 4.3-litre Vantage. The power upgrade will see peak power rise by 15kW to 298kW, with a modest torque increase from 410Nm to 420Nm resulting in a higher top speed of 285km/h and an improved zero to 100km/h time.

Aston Martin Vantage 4.3-litre The package has been developed by the Aston Martin engineering team and includes a revised induction system using technology previously introduced on the DBS. The new air intake system has a pair of switching airbox-valves that open at 5,500rpm allowing additional air into the engine producing more power.

Engine calibration has also been revised to optimise ignition timing and improve compatibility with higher octane fuels.

The Sports Pack was first introduced on the 4.7-litre V8 Vantage earlier this year, and is now fitted to half of all vehicles produced - leading Aston Martin to provide the popular option to previous owners to enhance the handling characteristics of the car.

The package comprises uprated springs and Bilstein dampers, and lightweight forged aluminium 5-spoke wheels which help reduce unsprung mass, further improving the precision handling of the V8 Vantage.

New BMW Z4 videos

We’ve seen plenty of images of the new BMW Z4, but to really enjoy this BMW (and be particularly jealous) we have to check it out in motion. In the following BMW Z4 videos after the jump, you can see the roadster soul reaching a more mature and refined style. While this car has a long list of positive aspects, the only fault we can find is the weight; the Z4 weighs 1,480 kg for the S-Drive23i and 1,585 kg for the twin-turbo.

2010 Z4 Roadster at Detroit Auto Show

BMW has released the first details and images for its all-new BMW Z4 Roadster, which is set to make its debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show before going on sale in the following months. The design of the new Z4 comes out through classic details interpreted in a very modern style, highlighted by an automated folding aluminum roof.

2010 Z4 RoadsterThe hardtop brings the Z4 in line with the competition, opening and closing in 20 seconds. The weight penalty is offset by greater security, better visibility and greater comfort. The side windows are 40% larger than the outgoing soft-top model, and the rear window is fully 52% larger. The Z4 also keeps its classic roadster proportions, with a long hood, short overhangs, and strong shoulders. However, the car’s styling has been modernized with new integrated LED indicators on its flanks as well as on the head and tail-lamps.

The new car is slightly larger outside than its predecessor, offering significantly more comfort and storage. The new car is 5.8in longer, 0.4in wider, and 0.3in lower than the outgoing model. The wheelbase has also grown 0.1in to measure 98.8in from axle to axle. Two powertrains will be available at the car’s North America launch: a 300hp (224kW) twin-turbocharged 3.0L six wearing the new sDrive35i badge, and a 255hp (190kW) naturally aspirated version of the same engine in the sDrive30i model.

What’s most impressive is the torque characteristics of the turbocharged mill, which maintains its peak levels of 300lb-ft through a broad rev range from 1,400 to 5,000rpm. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds flat and reach an electronically controlled top speed of 150mph when equipped with an optional sport pack. The 0-60mph acceleration time for the sDrive30i, meanwhile, is 5.6 seconds.

While both models are available with a manual six-speed gearbox, the Z4 sDrive35i is available also with a dual-clutch sport automatic transmission featuring seven gears. The six-speed sport automatic is available on the Z4 sDrive30i. Both sport automatic transmissions feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Talk about being late to the party. The hors d'oeuvres are long since gone, the DJ looks ready for bed and the revelers are doing the Electric Slide for the third time. Still, tardiness may not diminish the appeal of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan to the compact crossover SUV crowd.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan-12009 Volkswagen Tiguan-2Don't bother looking the name up in the dictionary. You won't find it, as it's a concoction from VW's marketing department. We're told the name's a melding of tiger and iguana, which nearly makes for an entire zoo, given that the Tiguan is based on the same platform as the VW Rabbit. The Tiguan gets VW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine -- the same sprightly workhorse that also sees duty in the GTI, GLI and Audi products such as the A4 and TT.

In general, the Tiguan doesn't stray too far from the typical compact SUV design. It seats five, is offered in front-wheel or all-wheel drive and has nearly all of the latest convenience and safety features. But the Tiguan does offer a neatly tailored Euro design as well as the high-grade cabin treatment for which Volkswagen has become known. It also boasts composed handling and a comfortable ride.

These aspects help the Tiguan stand out a bit at the crossover party. But is it enough? Well, for people who have bought VW products in the past, the Tiguan will no doubt be a hit. And those who like to drive will find its Teutonic driving dynamics appealing.

But there are some downsides, including a price tag at least a few thousand above comparable vehicles and a smallish cargo capacity. As such, you might find models like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 to be more practical. There's also the Nissan Rogue, which is similar in concept to the Tiguan but less expensive. Still, the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan could be a nice alternative for discerning consumers looking for a little spice in a mostly bland segment.

All Tiguans are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 200 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. The S can be had with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, while the SE and SEL are automatic only. The latter two trims are also available with VW's "4Motion" all-wheel-drive system.

2009 BMW Z4 Roadster

We never know exactly what we’re going to get when BMW introduces a new product. Most agree that the new 7-series is a visual improvement over the vehicle it replaces, but then there are all-new vehicles like the X6 that we’re still trying to figure out, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view. We do, however, know exactly what a roadster is for and are often swayed by powerful turbocharged engines, so this new Z4—with its updated styling, optional turbos, and retractable hardtop—is likely to win us over.

2009 BMW Z4 RoadsterWe’d love to get right into the details, but first a little bit of housekeeping is in order. About a year ago, the BMW X6 brought with it a new way of identifying the company’s all-wheel-drive models. The X6 xDrive35i and xDrive50i associated a brand, xDrive, with BMW’s all-wheel-drive systems. Now that clumsy nomenclature style is being spread to the rear-drivers, with the Z4—in sDrive30i and sDrive35i forms—being the first to be saddled with the longer name. We’re not sure how they arrived at sDrive and also wonder what confusion this was meant to clear up. (Were too many people asking dealers for the all-wheel-drive Z4?) In any event, get used to seeing three times as many characters tacked onto future Bimmers.

As the names suggest, the new Z4 models will be powered by two familiar 3.0-liter inline-six BMW powerplants. The sDrive30i will pack the naturally aspirated version found in the current Z4 and making 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, while the sDrive35i adds twin turbochargers to produce an even 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. Both will come standard with a six-speed manual, and they carry quoted 0-to-60-mph times of 5.6 and 5.1 seconds, respectively. Opting for a six-speed automatic in the 30i slows the time down a bit, to 6.0. The optional transmission for the 35i is a version of the M DCT gearbox introduced in the latest M3, a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (or, as our German friends like to call it, a Doppelkupplungsgetriebe). Not only will the high-tech cogswapper lower 0–60 times—the quoted time is 5.0 seconds—but BMW also expects it to lower fuel consumption compared to the standard six-speed manual.

Aside from the new option of turbos, the roadster gets new styling that’s partly the result of the use of a two-piece aluminum retractable hardtop. While not a huge departure from the current styling, the stylish new look has nicely sculpted details and what may be the largest kidney grille in BMW’s current lineup. We’re glad to see a less-stubby trunk, which was lengthened in order to fit the two roof panels. This affords a large-ish trunk (6.4 cubic feet with the top down, 10.9 with it up) that BMW claims can fit four crates of large bottles—perfect for those operating a Z4-based Biergarten. Glass area and all-around visibility are increased, as well.

The automatic top deploys and stows in 20 seconds to reveal an interior available with BMW’s Sun Reflective leather, which keeps seats, interior panels, and the steering wheel cool to the touch in the face of those mean ultraviolet rays. An extended leather option for the 35i covers the instrument panel, sun visors, and passenger door handle with cowhide as well.

2009 Nissan XTerra

Most sport-utility vehicles are like apartment-dwelling Labrador retrievers: They’ve become soft—forgetting their original purpose in life was to work hard, get dirty and carry dead birds. Unlike most other SUVs, the 2009 Nissan Xterra feels as if it remembers its roots. Its floor and seats are inviting to muddy boots and wet raingear. Assertive fender bulges, prominent roof rack and black lower cladding stand out in the mall parking lot. Its stout ladder frame is based on that found in the Titan pickup. The XTerra’s cargo area can be had in hard plastic, and features 10 tie-down hooks. It has a tough-guy-loud exhaust and its ride is sometimes a bit harsh.

2009 Nissan XTerra-12009 Nissan XTerra-2The XTerra is not a throwback. No vehicle with standards like a 261-horsepower engine, electronic stability control, power windows, door locks and mirrors, cruise control, remote keyless entry and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and options such as a 300-watt sound system and leather seats can be so accused. It’s just that the XTerra communicates that it’s ready to load up and head into the backcountry. And it doesn’t mind if a wet Lab rides along.

For 2009, the XTerra receives freshened front styling that includes a new grille and revised bumper cladding. Also new: All XTerra’s now come with side-curtain airbags, designed to protect both front and rear passengers. The Off-Road trim level now comes with roof-mounted driving lights. Inside, the 2009 XTerra gets a revised, easy-to-read instrument panel and new seat surfaces for every trim level.

The XTerra is powered by a 261-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes a peak of 281 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic is available. Rear-wheel-drive is standard. Available is a traditional-style four-wheel-drive system that requires the driver to switch between two- and four-wheel drive. For serious off-roading, the driver can choose low-range four-wheel drive.

2009 Toyota Sienna

Styling
To answer that question, and others as well, we checked out Toyota’s latest edition of the Sienna, one of the top offerings of its type. Of course, credit should go to Chrysler for creating the segment with its Caravan/Voyager design in the first place, but many other manufacturers have refined and enhanced the concept in numerous ways: Toyota especially, having rolled out the Sienna in 1998. This first-gen model was much smaller (three inches narrower and five inches shorter in the wheelbase) than the 2009 model shown here, but remained in the lineup until 2003, despite the cramped accommodations. The current version that debuted in 2004 has gone through a number of changes. While we’ve heard rumors of a 2010 redesign, the 2009 Toyota Sienna offers excellent comfort, convenience and safety features, as well as being the only vehicle in its class with a choice of all-wheel drive (AWD). Optional 17-inch wheels are now available on LE models.

2009 Toyota Sienna-12009 Toyota Sienna-2Performance
Figure on being able to scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds or less, assuming an empty load (which won’t be often, considering the 149 cubic-feet of cargo capacity). Tow rating is as much as 3500 pounds, suitable for light trailers. The revised 2008 EPA figures come in at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for front-drive models, while the AWD versions rate 16 and 21, respectively. Those are fairly respectable numbers but can this bus corner? Well, with available safety features such as ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system, the Sienna comports itself surprisingly well. Its optional all-wheel drive is a plus for stable road holding on wet or slippery pavement.

Interior
The Sienna’s cabin is not only cavernous but also classy, dressed in quality fabric even on lower trim levels, and leather and wood-style trim on the higher-end models. Seating is comfortable throughout the interior, front to back, a fact that not all minivans can boast. One’s hindquarters sink into the cushy padding just the right amount, with the shape properly conforming. Our one small gripe, however. If you get the top-line Sienna, with power passenger seats, you lose two practical aspects: a small storage bin beneath the front passenger seat, and a folding function for that same seat. If you want these two features, choose the less-expensive LE.

Rinspeed to unveil iChange concept – Geneva auto show

The latest crazy contraption from Swiss coachbuilder Rinspeed will bow at the Geneva motor show, and as usual, this year’s concept is more than off-the-wall.

Rinspeed iChange concept Called the iChange, the car can be configured to seat one to three people and is powered by a 130-kilowatt electric motor. Rinspeed says the iChange is also zero-emissions, lightweight and has low aerodynamic drag.

The body design looks like something out of a 1950s vision of the cars of the future. It’s got a teardrop shape, prominent wheel wells and big headlights. It seats one person in its basic form, but the back of the car rises to allow two more to fit.

Rinspeed calls this feature an “electronic trick tail,” and didn’t offer specifics as to how this actually happens. A press releases did use the phase, “as if by magic,” to describe the process.

But based on past practices, this iChange will likely live up to its hype. Rinspeed has made Geneva its annual show of the unusual, displaying the submersible car sQuba in 2008 and the see-through eXasis in 2007.

Rinspeed’s first display in Geneva was a Volkswagen Golf Turbo in 1979, and the company has since carved a niche for itself with funky concepts and tuning.

Also under the bonnet, JE DESIGN boosts the power of the VW – the performance kit (1,249 Đ‚) increases the strength of the VW Scirocco 2.0 TFSI to 180 KW / 244 hp at 6,000 rpm. Thereby, also the torque rises from 280 to 350 Nm (at 3,350 rpm). 2008 Saturn Astra

The 2008 Saturn Astra is available as either a two- or four-door hatchback. Both versions are very small cars, with Motor Trend saying that the "Astra is a true subcompact" at "167.3 inches long for the five-door." For those who love European styling, Car and Driver brings good news, saying that "the only differences between the Astra built by GM's German subsidiary for sale in Europe and this new Saturn edition are its badges and minor exterior trim" changes.

2008 Saturn Astra-12008 Saturn Astra-2Revamped styling for the brand doesn't stop on the outside of the Astra; Saturn’s interior sports a fine design that Road & Track claims "exudes an aura that is definitely not of this continent." Edmunds raves about the interior, claiming that "the cabin is the Astra's strongest point" and noting that "Opel clearly had Volkswagen in its sights when it designed the Astra's interior." ConsumerGuide takes a more middle-of-the-road approach, adding, "While Astra's interior does nothing to impress in terms of style and design, it's pleasant overall, if a bit bland."

When bringing the Astra over from Europe, the people at Saturn decided to make life easier for the indecisive among us; accordingly, "a 138-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder is the only engine" available on the 2008 Saturn Astra, according to Cars.com. While occasionally underpowered, the Saturn Astra's four-cylinder powerplant holds up well around town.

And while the 1.8-liter engine doesn't provide a lot of oomph, the 2008 Saturn Astra is a wonderfully composed car on the road. Edmunds finds that the Astra is "pretty fun to drive...thanks to its European-influenced suspension tuning." ConsumerGuide also points out that even "base-suspension models offer better than average overall control." One drawback of the Saturn Astra's sport suspension is that ConsumerGuide feels that it can "make for a rough ride on nearly all types of pavement." Kelley Blue Book reviewers write that "the Astra's steering is firm with good on-center feel and the handling is sporty with excellent stability." Harnessing the Astra's momentum is "a good-sized set of discs at all four corners with standard ABS" that Car and Driver says give the 2008 Saturn Astra "better than average" braking performance.

100th Tesla Roadster delivered

The 100th Tesla Roadster has been delivered in the course of this last week, showing that perhaps there is still a market out there for the Californian company that specialises in electric cars. While it’s an expensive vehicle at 109,000 USD, a recharge of the battery costs between $2.50 and $5.50 and gives a range of 244 miles.

Tesla Roadster-1 Tesla Roadster-2Difficult times for Tesla have seen a lag in production from the 30 cars a week initially expected to be produced, down to 15. The original target of 30 was set to be reached by spring 2009. As long as the Roadster has its problems, the second model from the company, the Model S sedan, is unlikely to ever see the light of day.

The Tesla company is holding out for some government funding to continue production, which could be difficult in current economic times. Strange though, that governments are prepared to make anti-pollution laws but are often less prepared to finance the very projects that may achieve those aims.

2009 Ford Fiesta First Steer

Ford’s all-new Fiesta light car is funky, fashionable and fuel efficient and finally Ford thinks it may have found the secret to posting real sales numbers in the growing and competitive end car market. The current Ford Fiesta is a good car, but the company and particularly its dealers have struggled with shedding the ‘Falcon Car Company’ image and making real inroads into sales in the light and small car segments.

2009 Ford Fiesta -12009 Ford Fiesta -2With monthly sales of just under 500 units the Fiesta has not kicked the goals for Ford that it should have, but with a rejuvenated marketing team, led by recently appointed Vice-President of Sales and Market, Beth Donovan, a small car expert from the US, the company is now aiming to double that figure.

Ford believes that potential buyers will crossover from the bottom end of the focus market into the top end of the Fiesta market and while Ms Donovan was clear that no firm decision had been made on re-introducing the Ka, sub light segment car, this too could see a crossover between Fiesta buyers and those opting for the even smaller vehicle. Ford says the dramatic, eye-catching design of the new model is an extension of its acclaimed kinetic design language. Clean, sharp angular lines instantly differentiate the new model from its competitors, while a space age-like interior introduces an easy-to-master suite of operational controls.

A 1.6-litre engine with manual transmission is standard across the range, while an automatic transmission, matched to a 1.4-litre engine, is available as an option on all models except the three-door Zetec. The 1.6-litre engine with manual transmission delivers 88kW of power at 6000rpm and 152Nm of torque at 4050rpm. Fuel consumption is a frugal 6.1L/100km and carbon emissions are contained to 143g/km.

The slightly smaller 1.4-litre engine mated to the automatic transmission generates 71kW of power at 5750rpm and 128Nm of torque at 4200rpm. Fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km, carbon emissions are 164g/km, and all Fiestas are Ethanol-10 compatible. Fiesta will be available in both three-door and five-door body styles. The CL will be available in three-door or five-door guise, with manual transmission or optional automatic, and rides on 15-inch wheels.
