Prepared for VanEs Racing by Ken Spencer
September 5, 2005, A strong run by Smithville’s Ron Van Es ended eight laps early in the “APC 300 Great Canadian Race at Delaware Speedway on Sunday afternoon when engine problems developed in his #11 Monte Carlo.
The second year Super Series driver had to overcome a slow qualifying time on Saturday that saw the Star Van Systems/All Covers Chevy start Sunday’s CASCAR special 23rd in the 32-car field.
During the early stages of Sunday’s race Ron bided his time and slowly worked his way into the top twenty. He then took advantage of pit stops to edge further forward in the chase then caught a huge break on lap 232 by narrowly avoiding a multi-car accident that red flagged the event. The incident brought a premature end to the afternoon for six of those involved in the melee. By the time the track was cleared and the race resumed, Ron was 14th and still on the lead lap. It appeared he was in a good position to finish in the top ten until the yet-to-be determined problem arose.
“We aren’t sure what or where the problem is,” he reported after parking his car behind pit wall. “We won’t know for sure until we get the engine torn down on Tuesday. All I know is that we just lost power”.
Despite the disappointing finish, Van Es remains moored in thirteen spot in the standings heading to Cayuga Speedway this Saturday. He still has an outside chance of moving higher in the standings pending the results from Cayuga and the final event of the season at Kawartha Speedway on September 17th-18th.
Peter Gibbons of Stouffville captured Sunday’s contest followed by current Series’ points’ leader Don Thomson of Hamilton and Jeff Lapcevich of Caistor Centre. Ron Beauchamp Jr. of Windsor (4th), Doug Brown of Brantford (5th), DJ Kennington of St. Thomas (6th), Pete Shepherd of Brampton (7th), Dave Whitlock of Wyoming (8th) and JR Fitzpatrick of Cambridge (9th) rounded out the drivers who finished all 300 laps at the London area half-mile track.
