Maserati and Alfa’s new SUVs

Chrysler to build Alfa and Maserati SUVs in the US based on Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Maserati range could swell to include a high-power luxury SUV to compete with the likes of the Mercedes ML63 AMG and BMW X5M.

Speaking at the announcement of Chrysler’s better-than-expected third quarter financial results, Fiat and Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the improving financial situation had allowed the firm to look at creating Alfa and even Maserati SUVs which would hit the road in 2014.

The Alfa version could resurrect the 2003 Kamal concept pictured here, and would likely feature a revised version of Chrysler’s new petrol Pentastar V6
engine, while the small-volume Maserati could get the same 4.7-litre V8 petrol as found in the GranTurismo. Diesels are unlikely at first, given the small volumes, of around 5,000 per year, and target market.

Both cars would get their own unique styling and luxurious interiors to justify the likely price tags, which would start at around £45,000 for the Alfa and £65,000 for the Maserati. The two new SUVs would be built at Chrysler’s plant in Detroit, and would be aimed predominantly at the US and Chinese markets.

Chrysler has said that it expects its operating profit to hit 0 million (£433 million) for 2010, which is a massive 0 million more than predicted at the start of the year.
