Top Gear’s live blog from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Well, that’s made things very interesting indeed, hasn’t it?
Prior to this afternoon’s qualifying session at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, the general feeling was that the 19th and final race of the 2010 Formula One season ought to be something of a formality for championship leader Fernando Alonso. Hell, even the man himself abandoned his usual vocal restraint to announce that he felt ’100% confident’ of bagging a third crown earlier this week. But following a lacklustre Saturday that’s left two of Alonso’s rivals sat in front of him, Hamilton’s wingman to his right and Mark Webber looking to pounce on his gearbox from 5th on the grid, that conga line through downtown Madrid isn’t looking quite so nailed on. If the Spaniard wants to take the title tomorrow, he’s going to have to do it the hard way.
Not that it was ever going to be straightforward. Not in what’s been arguably the most dramatic season of the last decade, with control of the championship changing hands like a potato the temperature of the Earth’s core. And with a dramatic climax promised, there was no way we here at Top Gear were going to miss out. So, strings pulled and backs scratched, we’ve managed to secure a race day paddock pass, which – via the humbling magical power of the Internet – we’ll be using to keep you lot in the loop on what’s going on behind the scenes at the most important race of the year.
So head back to TopGear.com tomorrow where, from around 7am GMT, our man on the ground will be soaking up the atmosphere, posting whimsical trackside observations and, cameraphone drawn, invading the personal space of the gathered celebrity guests and racing royalty. And, of course, keeping you updated with the latest developments in this year’s nail-biting Formula One title fight.
See you in the morning…
