BMW M1 Hommage to become green supercar

A purported insider from the BMW ranks has revealed details about a green supercar that will be based on the M1 Hommage. The BMW eco-friendly supercar could even be on the market by 2012.

The car is set to show off all of BMW’s environmental qualifications, perhaps giving this segment the luxurious touch it needs. Technology used on this vehicle could include stop-start systems, direct injection and recharge braking.

BMW M1 Hommage-1BMW M1 Hommage-2The source is strangely silent though, on the engine range to be utilised, citing a number of models that could be employed, and even including the possibility of a hybrid model. We could take this as an evolutionary moment in the supercar sector, which to stay alive, is going to need some new, environmentally-friendly life. A supercar model will also help BMW compete with the likes of the Audi R8 and the Mercedes Slr.

Toyota Applies VAT Reduction to Car Prices

Toyota has acted swiftly to pass on the benefit of the 2.5 per cent reduction in the standard rate of VAT to its customers. From 1st December 2008 the new 15 per cent rate will apply to all new Toyota cars and options. The revised on-the-road vehicle prices also take into account the VAT element in delivery charges and the cost of number plates.

Toyota RAV4The reductions make the Toyota range even better value for money. For example, the price of the revolutionary new Toyota iQ is reduced by up to £240, with the model range now starting at £9,295. The order books for Toyota iQ are open now, with first deliveries to customers in January.

Within the established Toyota line-up, there are significant savings to be enjoyed, for example on the Toyota RAV4 compact SUV, with the added-value XT-R versions now costing from £19,620 for the 2.0 VVT-i manual model - £425 less than the current OTR price.

2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid 4WD

If we're all going to end up driving hybrids, the revolution should start in this class. I think the small cute-ute/crossover segment was born out of nothing but marketing departments, and these vehicles could all be replaced by hatchbacks and wagons with absolutely no ill effect. But consumers are hooked on the vehicles in this class, and there's no way the American public will turn to hatchbacks and wagons overnight. So all these small sport-utilities and crossovers might as well go hybrid and save us lots of fuel.

2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid 4WD-12009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid 4WD-2The Mercury Mariner/Ford Escape hybrids are probably the best products in the Ford portfolio right now. They make sense for a lot of consumers, and the pricing isn't insane. Sure, the steering is dead, you're forced to have a continuously variable transmission, and there isn't a ton of power, but that doesn't matter. If you're shopping for a cute-ute, you don't care about driving for the sake of driving, and this Mariner does everything it's supposed to do very well.

A hybrid drivetrain (and the efficiency mindset that goes with it) doesn't really mesh with the heavy, impractical, inefficient-by-nature SUV, no matter how small. As such, I can't help wondering just how much better the Mariner's fuel economy would be if it were a tad smaller, a tad lighter, and less of a brick in the wind tunnel. It just seems too much like a stopgap, as if we're kidding ourselves as to what we really ought to be driving. I feel wasteful, no matter how much less gas I'm using.

Ford has greatly improved the Mercury Mariner (and its twin, the Ford Escape) in the last two years, concentrating on the styling for 2008 and the mechanicals for 2009. The interior of the Mariner is greatly improved over what it was a couple of years ago, but there is still some evidence of cost-cutting, notably the cheap-looking plastic vent covers. Still, the overall look and feel of the interior is quite nice.

On the road, the transition between gasoline and electric power is practically unnoticeable. The trick is to get up to speed and tap the brake slightly, at which point the vehicle will switch to electric power, although you might not notice it unless you're looking at the RPM gauge. It's quite a difference from our long-term Toyota Camry hybrid, which noticeably surged and/or stuttered when switching between power sources.

2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara

According to Kelley Blue Book, the Suzuki Grand Vitara "applies traditional SUV styling cues to a scaled-down package with just the right rounding of contours to yield a clean and contemporary appearance." Motor Trend is substantially more impressed with this Suzuki 2008 exterior, calling it "arguably the best looking car in its class." According to MyRide.com, the Suzuki Grand Vitara possesses "clean, hard lines that appeal to those who want refined, mainstream styling in their SUVs."

2008 Suzuki Grand VitaraThose "hard lines" in the 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara are softened somewhat inside, according to Edmunds: "flowing lines abound, with gauges taking up residence in a multilayered cluster with simulated aluminum trim." They add "the Limited's leather is very nice to look at." According to Kelley Blue Book, "silver plastic accents on the base and XSport are replaced by leather and faux wood in the Luxury model," but to the tester at Mother Proof, "the rear of cabin proved to be very basic."

ConsumerGuide reports that this year's Suzuki Grand Vitara is powered by "a 185-hp 2.7-liter V-6," which, according to Edmunds, is “paltry compared to the [Toyota] RAV4's V-6." Although "not necessarily a top choice for major towing duty, the Grand Vitara can tug up to 3,000 pounds." If this Suzuki 2008 motor seems to lack power, Motor Trend suggests "torque may be the culprit, as the Grand Vitara's peak twist resides at 4,500 rpm."

This lackluster engine "teams with either a four-speed-automatic or five-speed-manual transmission" like most Suzuki 2008 vehicles, according to Cars.com, which adds that "the four-wheel-drive system has a Low range and is intended for use only on slippery surfaces." ConsumerGuide reports that "highway passing can take patience with automatic transmission, which downshifts readily for more power," and "the manual transmission doesn't change gears smoothly when rushed."

Edmunds remarks "fuel economy estimates, at 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway for a 4WD model with the automatic transmission, are below average for a compact SUV."

Overall handling characteristics get moderate praise: ConsumerGuide reports "marked body lean but good grip in fast corners," adding that "steering is nicely weighted and the turning circle is commendably tight, but test AWD models exhibited some front driveline binding when turned fully to either side" and "firm, easy-to-modulate brakes provided good stopping control.

2008 Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode Concept

(from Hyundai press release) HYUNDAI HED-5 "i-MODE" CONCEPT MAKES NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW WITH NEW ECO-FRIENDLY POWERTRAIN

2.0-liter, Four-cylinder Turbo Engine with Gasoline Direct Injection Approved for U.S. Market Intro in 2010

2008 Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode Concept-12008 Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode Concept-2Hyundai unveiled the HED-5 i-Mode concept at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show , featuring an all-new, eco-friendly powertrain making its first-ever appearance for Hyundai. The six-passenger family crossover, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, combines visionary styling with future technologies and advanced eco-dynamics.

For its North American debut, Hyundai added a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with state-of-the-art Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) that improves efficiency and reduces emissions. The HED-5 i-Mode concept and the new powerplant, called the Theta Turbo GDI, have been green lighted for the U.S. market. Variants of the engine will appear in various Hyundai models. Timing and specifications for a production version of a family crossover similar to HED-5 i-Mode are currently in development.

For the U.S. market, the HED-5 i-Mode reveals a first-ever powerplant for Hyundai, the Theta Turbo GDI. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine uses gasoline direct injection technology. By injecting the fuel directly inside the cylinder in small, precise amounts, the performance and response of the engine improve thanks to the intake charge cooling. Both fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions improve due to the improved combustion. Combine GDI with turbo charging and the result is exceptional power output. The engine has capacity for up to 286 horsepower, greater than most six-cylinder engines on the market, while improving fuel economy by 15-20 percent. The Theta Turbo GDI includes Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to further improve efficiency. This ultra-efficient, high-tech gasoline engine will be fitted in various Hyundai models in future model years.

2010 Mazda 3 Hatchback

Just days after 2010 Mazda 3 sedan was first introduced at the L.A. show, its five-door hatchback sibling has been unveiled electronically, in advance of its meatspace debut.

On December 3, the more useful 3 will be shown at the Bologna motor show in Italy. The hatch shares the sedan’s somewhat-goofy-looking, smiley front end, as well as its new interior and, of course, chassis. Expect the same powertrain options as the current U.S.-market hatch, namely one: the 2.5-liter four. Europeans will be able to choose from among two turbo-diesels and 1.6- and 2.0-liter gas-fired fours, the latter also found in the U.S. sedan.

2010 Mazda 3 Hatchback-12010 Mazda 3 Hatchback-2What’s more exciting for us, though, is the promise of a new Mazdaspeed 3, which will once again be offered in hatchback, front-drive form only. After catching a few glimpses of the speediest of the 3s on the Nürburgring, we’ve been anxiously awaiting further details on the replacement for one of our favorites. It is expected to use the same turbocharged 2.3-liter as now, generating at least the 263 hp of the current model. That car should be arriving for the Geneva show, which takes place in March of next year.

2009 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo

(from Lamborghini press release) The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo: The world’s fastest one-make series

Next year will see Lamborghini launch an all-new race series – the world’s fastest one-make series. In May 2009, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo takes to the track with its first race. By the end of October, it will have completed 18 races on famous European circuits, supporting popular series like the Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft (DTM), the FIA GT Series and the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).

2009 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo-12009 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo-2Lamborghini is building 30 cars for the Super Trofeo, which they are making available to individual enthusiasts, as well as to Lamborghini dealer teams. The factory will enter one car for itself, and plans to commission well-known guest drivers to take the wheel. And on the edge of the racing action, the Super Trofeo Village hospitality venue will be available.

The Super Trofeo race car is based on the Gallardo LP 560-4, powered by the new 5.2 litre V10 with direct fuel injection (IDS), generating an increased output of 419 kW (570 hp). Its power flows through the e.gear six-speed robotized gear box to the permanent all-wheel drive with viscous traction – the kind of power transmission perfectly suited to motorsport.

The Super Trofeo is a top-class race car in every detail. Its chassis, featuring double wishbone suspension all round, has been reworked specifically for the purpose. The competition tyres are supplied by Pirelli and a specialist racing brake system provides brutal stopping power with racing ABS. Additional body components such as the large, fixed rear wing are made from carbon-fibre composite. The cockpit hosts an ultra-light race seat, a racing steering wheel and additional specialized racing instruments.

Lamborghini is offering the competition vehicles and replacement parts via its dealerships, with each car costing 200,000 Euro plus tax. Both professional and ‘gentleman’ drivers with an International Competition Licence (A, B or C) are free to enter the Super Trofeo, as are teams from Lamborghini dealerships.

2009 Aston Martin Rapide - official images

After numerous concept images, and news about the production of the car, Aston Martin has finally revealed the first official image of its forthcoming four-door GT, the Rapide. CAR Magazine reports that this is the genuine article, and that despite a few detail differences, this image reveals that the production version remains mostly faithful to the original concept car.

2009 Aston Martin Rapide -12009 Aston Martin Rapide -2It loses a few intake vents on the front bumper, and there’s a new crease-line from the front guards back, however even the seats remain the same (if you look very closely!). A glass roof also features.

With a 373kW and 570Nm 6.0-litre V12 at the front (essentially the engine from the DBS), the Rapide’s estimated two tonnes shouldn’t be a problem. ZF’s creamy six-speed auto should also promote smooth travelling.

More images will be coming in the next few months, so stay tuned to see the battle between the Aston Martin Rapide and the Porsche Panamera.

Faster Farbio GTS 400

CAR just tested the newly updated Farbio GTS 400 and they seem to have enjoyed it. The original Farbio GTS was already available in normally aspirated or supercharged form, but the old engine put out just 384 hp with the blower. This year's new GTS 400 flagship puts ot 410 hp thanks to new pistons and connecting rods, among other things. Former Marcos and Invicta head Chris Marsh is the man behind this V6-powered carbon fiber-bodied supercar. He bought Farboud from its founder Arash Farboud and restructured the company, renamed it Farbio, and moved it to the Cotswolds near Bath.

Faster Farbio GTS 400He has stuck with off-the-rack, treid-and-true components wherever possible to make this lightweight supercar somewhat affordable, reliable and workable. Still, at £94,000 or 110,000 Euro, it's no Hyundai Accent. Some will say that's way too much for a little-known brand, especially when that amount could get you something like an Audi R8, but where's the fun in that? These cars appeal to the person who wants something different.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, know that the GTS 400 will now do the the sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7sec while charging to a top speed of 180 mph. The force-fed V6 is also said to be good for 24 mpg imperial. While many of the details remind us of other supercars on the market, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Knowing these cottage builders still exist is one of the things we are most thankful for this time of year.

Fiat low cost brand for Europe

Fiat had already decided to launch its low cost brand in emerging markets such as the South American market, but given the current economic crisis, the brand could be considered for the Eastern European market as well.

FiatSergio Marchionne has announced that three new models will be launched in 2010, which could offset sales problems in the current market. The Fiat low cost brand will be competition for products such as Dacia, which Renault successfully launched in Europe.

Currently the new Fiat brand is without a name, with suggestions ranging between Innocenti and Autobianchi, although something entirely new could come of the venture.

2008 Nissan Frontier

Although it is often referred to as compact class, the 2008 Nissan Frontier is truly a mid-size pickup, offering a six-foot bed and two extended cab lengths, including a King Cab and a Crew Cab. Crew Cabs offer the standard five-foot bed, but the six-foot bed is available on the SE and LE models of this size 2008 Nissan Frontier. Automobile observes, “Despite this, the Frontier is at the smallish end of the new mid-size range,” while also includes the Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma. The 2008 Frontier is what ConsumerGuide refers to as a "middle-of-the-pack size"; with its design and style, it "carves out a nice niche for itself in the compact-pickup market."

2008 Nissan FrontierTheCarConnection.com’s editors have driven the Frontier. Nissan’s style is a good mix of straight struck lines and some carlike curves around the large chrome-bar grille and at the lower edge of the side-rear windows. Grey plastic and orange markings trim the interior, and though the plastics and fabrics look inexpensive, the design is straightforward and logical.

The 2008 Nissan Frontier offers performance that is to be expected of a rough-and-tumble mid-size truck.

The 2008 Nissan Frontier is available with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder that creates 152 hp coupled with 171 pound-feet of torque, “making it a decent choice only for those who need a low-cost, light-duty work truck,” Edmunds says.

The optional engine is a 4.0-liter V-6 that builds up 261 hp and 281 pound-feet of torque. ConsumerGuide makes note of the fact that the automatic V-6 "kicks down quickly for good midrange passing punch." Car and Driver says, “the Frontier stands out in its segment, thanks to its excellent 261-hp V-6 engine and its stellar steering and on-road handling.” Automobile says the V-6 Frontier “launches the 4x4 Crew Cab from 0 to 60 mph in just over eight seconds.”

Fuel economy ranges from 19/23 mpg with the four-cylinder manual versions to 14/19 mpg with the big V-6, automatic Frontier. The V-6 engine is also available in a four-wheel-drive option, and as Edmunds says, "Frontier 4x4s are capable off-road, thanks to a maximum 10.1 inches of ground clearance and plenty of suspension travel."

2009 Abt Volkswagen Scirocco

(from Abt Sportsline press release) The new ABT Volkswagen Scirocco – more dynamics for the sports coupe

“The very first Scirocco was the absolute star amongst compact sport coupes”, reminisces Hans-Juergen Abt. The manager of the renowned car tuner is just as fascinated with the great-grandson of the Wolfsburger trend-setter: “The Scirocco looks really dynamic and the handling is very agile.” All the more so with the Kempten modifications. They really make a storm out of a desert wind: The ABT Front spoiler makes the unmistakable face of the coupe even more distinctive. Even while stationary it is clear, who the “king of the ring” or the street is, as the ABT Scirocco seems to virtually lie in ambush of the kilometres ahead of it. This impression is supported by the lines on its sides, where the ABT Side skirts absorb and continue the sleek design

2009 Abt Volkswagen Scirocco-12009 Abt Volkswagen Scirocco-2Anything that has such dynamic charisma must also have convincing performance. ABT has therefore also developed power refinements for the VW engine. The 1.4 TSI now offers 200 hp (147 kW) on the road with ABT Power instead of 160 hp (118 kW), and the turbo diesel with two litre capacity 170 hp / 125 kW (standard: 140 hp / 103kW) The ABT Scirocco will be available with these upgrades from the start. Later on in the year the compact sports coupe will also be available with an increased-power 2.0 TSI. With it the car has 240 hp / 177 kW (standard: 200 hp / 147 kW).

The brake pads of the ABT Braking system are able to cope with any situation, and with a diameter of 345 mm always grip powerfully. As is normal at ABT, all the details fit perfectly together and thereby result in a fascinating top range car. You can see that it comes from the very top of the range and want to drive it straight off.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart has been unveiled almost a year ago and aims to be a less expensive alternative for the Lancer Evo X. The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is powered by the same 4B11 T/C Turbo 2.0 liter engine that powers the Evo X, but tuned to output 237 hp at 6000 rpm and 253 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000 rpm instead of the 295 hp in the Evo. The engine of the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is coupled with the 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) that has only 2 operating modes, Normal and Sport, instead of three in the Evo. The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is also fitted with 4-wheel drive (4WD) and the All-Wheel Control (AWC) system that includes an Active Center Differential (ACD).

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer RalliartAs far as the styling goes, the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart has a similar styling as the Evo X, without the wider body kit and the higher boot spoiler.

Mitsubishi Press Release:

The new-for-2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is based on the Lancer GTS platform, adopting powertrain and 4-wheel drive technology from the Lancer Evolution. The result is a unique model optimized for exhilarating yet balanced overall road performance. The Lancer Ralliart gets a modified version of the Lancer Evolution 4B11 T/C turbocharged/intercooled 2.0-liter DOHC MIVEC engine, teamed with the Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) from the Evolution MR model. Starting with a Lancer Evolution long block assembly, the turbocharger, intercooler and valve timing are modified for impressive street-oriented performance in the Ralliart application.

The Lancer Ralliart engine produces 237 hp at 6,000 RPM and 253 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,000 RPM. (Evolution: 291 hp and 300 lb.-ft.) The driver can manually shift using the console shifter or the Sportronic steering column-mounted magnesium-alloy paddle shifters, or can select fully automatic operation. The Lancer Ralliart's TC-SST unit features Normal and Sport shifting modes (but not the ultra-performance S-Sport mode featured in the Evolution MR.)

The 2009 Lancer Ralliart is a unique new model designed for driving enthusiasts who value exhilarating yet balanced overall road performance. The name is inspired by Ralliart, the performance and motorsports division of Mitsubishi, which has claimed World Rally Championships in addition to dominating the Dakar Rally. With the 2009 Lancer Ralliart, the Ralliart name is fomented as the performance brand for Mitsubishi Motors.

The 2009 Lancer Ralliart is powered by a modified version of the Lancer Evolution's turbocharged / intercooled 2.0-liter MIVEC engine, but tuned for strong low-end and mid-range torque. The standard Active Center Differential (ACD) full-time 4-wheel drive system is essentially the same as used in the previous-generation U.S.-spec Lancer Evolution models.

2010 Audi TT RS

Five-cylinder engines have long been an Audi trademark. First used in 1977 in the Audi 100/5000, five-cylinders took Audi upmarket and clearly differentiated the brand from the competition. The Audi 200 Turbo, with its 170-hp inline-five, became the world's fastest four-door in 1984; the 315-hp, Audi 80–based RS2 Avant of the mid-‘90s was the most extreme station wagon of its time; and Audi won several rally championships with the five-banger Quattro—the S1 Pikes Peak had almost 600 hp.

2010 Audi TT RSIn the mid-‘90s, Audi dropped the five-cylinder engine and its characteristic, subdued growl in favor of more conventional four-cylinder and V-6 engines. Brand aficionados howled in futile protest, and engineering guru Ferdinand Piëch, who had developed the five-cylinder engine but later moved on to become head of VW, said he never quite understood why the engine had been dropped.

As of March 2009, a five-cylinder will be back in Audi's range in the form of a 2.5-liter unit with direct injection; it is based on Audi's modular engine architecture. The transversely mounted engine is force-fed by a single turbocharger and will make 330–340 hp. Torque is rumored to be around 330 lb-ft. That's enough to significantly set the TT RS apart from the lesser TTS with its 265-hp, 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine.

The TTS coupe is claimed to run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and the fixed-roof TT RS—which will be built as either a 2+2 coupe or roadster—should jet to 60 at least a half a second quicker. If customers request it, top speed will be raised to 174 mph; the TTS is governed to 155. Curb weight will be around 3000 lb and Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard. Power will be transmitted through a six-speed manual transmission; it is unlikely that the dual-clutch transmission will be adapted to the TT RS.

Expect minor but significant changes to set the TT RS apart from the TTS. It needs even more air, so the front intakes will be larger, and it will sport the two large oval exhaust tips which identify Audi's RS models.

BYD and Brilliance at Detroit show

For the first time, two Chinese automakers will have main floor exhibit space at Cobo Center for the 2009 Detroit auto show.

Chinese automakers BYD Auto Co. and Brilliance Jinbei Automotive Co. will occupy about 11,000 square feet on the main floor. The space was reserved for Mitsubishi Motors Corp. but became available after that company pulled out of the show.

BYD"They've been waiting, all the exhibitors in Michigan Hall, so it's a wonderful opportunity for them," said Joe Serra, show co-chairman. BYD and Brilliance "have been notified and they're thrilled."

Chinese automakers have had a presence in Detroit for years but were always in Michigan Hall -- the lower level of Cobo Center -- or the lobby. BYD and Brilliance do not sell vehicles in the United States.

Besides Mitsubishi, five other automakers have pulled out of the show. Nissan North America said yesterday it dropped out of next year's Detroit and Chicago auto shows, citing depressed economic conditions.

Nissan, the biggest automaker to skip out of the show, followed the exits of Suzuki, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari. Porsche pulled out of the show last year and has not returned.
