Purple Reign: Holden Rolls Out Epica and Morpheous Commodore VE SS

BRISBANE, Australia — All eyes were supposed to be on the Holden Epica, the new midsize sedan that made its Australian debut today at the Brisbane International Motor Show. But it was difficult to focus on the new replacement for the Vectra, given the controversial new purple shade called "Morpheous" that was rolled out on the Commodore VE SS.

The South Korea-built Epica will hit showrooms in April in two variants, the CDX and CDXi, with a choice of either a 2.0 or a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine, depending on the model. The 2.0-liter delivers 141 horsepower and peak torque of 144 pound-feet. The 2.5-liter delivers 154 hp and peak torque of 174 lb-ft. A five-speed manual or five-speed automatic are the transmission choices.

GM doesn't explain the odd name of its purple color on the VE Commodore, but it may be derived from Morpheus, who, according to Roman mythology, is the son of Somnus, the god of sleep.
