ARLINGTON, Va. — In a major dose of good news for
Ford, the company's
2007 Edge crossover received a "Top Safety Pick" award on Monday from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The ratings for the
2007 Ford Fusion also improved, although it was not named a Top Safety Pick because it's rated "marginal" for rear crash protection, and because electronic stability control isn't available, the institute said.
To qualify for the highest rating, vehicles must earn the highest rating of "good" in all three Institute tests, which include front, side and rear crash protection. The
Edge has the same underpinnings as the Lincoln MKX.
The award applies to
Edge and MKX vehicles made after January
2007 because
Ford modified head restraints to improve rear crash protection.
Ford made changes to the Fusion's ability to withstand a front and side crash. The institute said that, in the new tests, the ratings improved to "good" in both cases.
The institute noted that 13 cars, minivans and SUVs initially qualified for the
2007 awards. But as automakers introduce new models or make upgrades to existing ones, the institute adds "Top Safety Pick" winners throughout the year. Among the other highest-ranking vehicles for 2007 are the Acura RDX, Audi A4 and Honda Pilot.
