CARQUEST joins Kyle Busch #5 Nextel Cup team with multi-year pact

CHARLOTTE, NC - Hendrick Motorsports today announced a multi-year agreement that will feature CARQUEST Auto Parts as a major associate sponsor of the No. 5 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series team with driver Kyle Busch.

Along with associate-sponsorship status on the No. 5 Kellogg's Chevrolets throughout the schedule, the pact will showcase primary CARQUEST color-schemes on the car in 10 NEXTEL Cup events, divided equally between the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

"All of us at CARQUEST Auto Parts are proud to continue our association with Hendrick Motorsports as their Official Auto Parts Supplier," said Art Lottes III, president of CARQUEST. "Hendrick Motorsports is a world-class organization and we look forward in 2005 to continued success with Kyle Busch and our new relationship with the No. 5 team."

Raleigh-based CARQUEST, the Official Auto Parts Supplier of Hendrick Motorsports since 2002, began its association with Busch this past season as primary sponsor of Hendrick's No. 84 NEXTEL Cup effort. The six-race initiative marked the series debut of Busch at his hometown track of Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, along with additional events at Lowe's Motor Speedway, California Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway.

"I'm real excited to have CARQUEST back on the hood in 2005," said Busch, who will compete for the 2005 NEXTEL Cup Raybestos Rookie of the Year award. "They've been a great supporter of my racing career with Hendrick Motorsports and I look forward to continuing that relationship in my rookie year in the NEXTEL Cup Series with the No. 5 team."

In his first full season of NASCAR Busch Series competition, Busch earned top rookie honors en route to a second-place finish in the championship standings in 2004. At 19, he will once again be the youngest full-time competitor in any of NASCAR's three major touring series in 2005.

Merry Christmas

I hope everyone is having a great Christmas and a bit of a break.

There isn't a whole lot of news right now, but I have a few tidbits to pass along.

CASCAR West's Bob Ennis let people know that next year's Western finale at Sun Valley Motor Speedway will be televised by JRA Video (Jim & Joel Robinson), which is great news for the western circuit.

Ennis also noted that multi-time Western champ Wade Lee will campaign a Sun Valley-sponsored car for the entire Western Series season. That would be a big shot in the arm for the series to have Wade back in action. Let's hope it happens!

The only other news is that there will be a 'Canadian' team entered as part of the The Racer's Group juggernaut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The team's #61 entry will feature the father-and-son duo of Greg and Mark Wilkins (of Toronto) who will drive with Dave Lacey (Toronto) and David Shep (Caledon, ON).

The Wilkins and Lacey scored an SGS podium finish at Daytona in 2004 and The Racer's Group Porsche scored a stunning overall victory in 2003, so the #61 car could be fun to watch.

STOUFFVILLE, ON - Inside Track contributor Russ Bond came across a classified ad that lists the qualifications of a certain veteran F1 driver.

I thought I'd post it here because everyone can use a laugh now and then.

While I've got you... how's that last-minute shopping going? Good luck in the trenches! I'll be seeing some of you guys in the stores on Friday, I'd imagine.

Before you head out, have a look at the Holiday Buyers' Guide that ran in Volume 8, Issue 9 of ITMN... lots of great gift ideas in there for the racing fan on your list. Happy hunting!

BIG NEWS: Multimatic enters dream team in Rolex 24

DEARBORN, MI - A story on SPEED TV is reporting that Canada's Multimatic team is entering a Crown Royal Special Reserve-sponsored Multimatic Ford in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, in February.

The team will consist of Multimatic driver Scott Maxwell, as well as Roush drivers Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle. Busch is the new Nextel Cup champ, while Kenseth was the '03 Winston Cup winner.

I had a chance to witness the twice-around-the-clock event in 2003 from the Multimatic pits and it was an incredible experience. It says a lot about how the international racing community views Multimatic to have the last two Cup champs in their car at Daytona. Good luck to all involved!

CENTRE FOR SPEED: Crate program gains momentum

SHEDIAC, NB – The Centre for Speed's fledgling SPEC Sealed Crate Engine Program appears to be just what the drivers ordered.

After a successful trial of a sealed spec crate engine in 2004 – in its new Pro Stock Division – the Shediac, NB speedway has already received requests for four more crate engines to run in the class in 2005. One or two additional orders are expected, according to the Centre for Speed’s Tim Wile.

“I’m very excited that this cost reduction strategy has ended up generating new drivers for this class,” said Wile. “We’re well on our way to making crate engines the norm in racing in the near future.”

Last year, Springhill, NB’s Sandy Livingston Jr. was a rookie in the track’s new Pro Stock class. Livingston was the first driver in Canada to campaign a Pro Stock car with a sealed spec crate engine.

After proving the engine could be competitive with only minor adjustments, several more have taken Livingston’s lead and are joining the move to crate engines. There is also word that the Pro Stock Tour will be required to allow the Centre engine in any races in Shediac.

DIRT: Autodrome Drummond changes for '05

DRUMMONDVILLE, QC - For the 18th consecutive year, DIRT MotorSports will sanction racing at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec. But for the first time, the DIRT 358-Modifieds will be the headliners at the half-mile oval.

Together with nearby Autodrome Granby, officials at the two circuits agreed to find common ground in complying with the new DIRT 358-Modified rules, which includes rev limiters. The addition of a rev limiter on the 358-Modifieds will cut costs in the long run and help make the division more competitive from top to bottom.

"With Granby already running small-blocks weekly on Friday, this will be a big boost for both fans and drivers alike," said Gaston Salvas, a long-time Super DIRT Series official with ties to both Quebec tracks. "Drummond became isolated when Granby dropped the class in 2001 as it was the last track standing north of the border to regularly host big-block racing.

"It has been very difficult with only about 10 big-block teams available in the area. Mixing together small-blocks with big-blocks and trying to make them competitive with each other was practically impossible. While this announcement surprised a lot of people, the same ones were also very pleased to hear the news," Salvas added.

Autodrome Drummond's Alain Poirier and Jacques Constant have owned the facility since 2002. The two recently agreed to lease the speedway for five years to DIRT Modified racer and promoter Yan Bussiere and general manager Karl Labonte, who is the nephew of open-wheel veteran Denis Labonte.

"This is one of the nicest Christmas presents I've had in years," said Granby promoter and DIRT Hall of Fame inductee Bob Gatien upon the hearing the news.

On Saturday nights in 2005 at Drummond, the 358-Modifieds will be joined by traditional open-wheel Sportsman and full-fender semi-pro and four-cylinder cars.

Drummond is a track rich in history. It opened in 1951 and acquired DIRT MotorSports sanctioning in 1988, when Marco Potvin captured the big-block Modified championship. When small blocks were added in 1999, Clement Therrien drove off with the 358-Modified title.

The list of champions at Drummond includes Frenchmen Luke Plante, Real LaFrance, Steve Poirier and 2004 titlists David Hebert and Kayle Robidoux, as well as Americans Steve Paine and Mike Romano. Poirier has won a track-record 45 DIRT Modified features while Therrien tops the small-block division with four career wins.

The green flag on the 2005 season is anticipated to wave the second weekend in May. The annual Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series showdown expected to be staged in July.

Hinchcliffe tests Mazda & Atlantic before trip to Austria

GUELPH, ON – Formula BMW USA Rookie-of-the-Year, James Hinchcliffe has been extremely busy the past couple of weeks. With tests in a Pro Formula Mazda and Toyota Atlantic the young Canadian also traveled across the pond to Austria as a guest of BMW’s motorsports announcement.

The first on-track activity took place at BeaveRun Raceway as Hinchcliffe reunited with his Rookie-of-the-Year championship winning team AIM Autosport. Hinchcliffe joined four other pilots for the early November test and managed to out pace both in his first time in the car.

“Those cars are amazing” stated Hinchcliffe. “I can’t believe the power and the overall grip that the cars have. I am sure they would be a blast to drive during race competition. The team did a great job with the new car and it is definitely a car I can see myself racing this year.”

Next on Hinchcliffe’s jam packed schedule was a trip south for a November 29th and 30th test in a Toyota Atlantic. Joining Hinchcliffe at Sebring Raceway were a handful of Champ Car teams and Polestar Racing Group, the team that would provide the Canadian with this amazing opportunity. The always professional Polestar team brought their race crew to the test as well as driver Ronnie Bremer who was on hand to provide support to the young Canadian. As a result of the Rookie-of-the-Year championship, Hinchcliffe received this two day test from BMW and proved to be extremely fast in his first time in the car.

“Everything about these cars are incredible. The acceleration, corning and top speeds were truly amazing.” expressed and excited Hinchcliffe. “The braking was the hardest thing to master but with the support from Polestar and the information provided by the team engineer and Ronnie Bremer, I was able to get up to speed quickly.”

By the time the second day came to a close, Hinchcliffe had completed over 350 miles in the car and gained a wealth of knowledge. After the final session the Oakville, ON resident learned that he had circuited the nine turn Sebring Raceway faster then any other previous test completed at the same Sebring track by Polestar.

“I would like to take this time to thank everyone who has been involved in my career to date. I would also like to thank both AIM Autosport and Polestar for the generous tests that were provided.” James also went on to say, “The tests were a great learning experience for me and with them now complete, it will be time to determine what the plans are for next season.”

Next up for Hinchcliffe was a trip to Austria where the aspiring motorsports star was a guest of the BMW Motorsports. Hinchcliffe traveled half way across the world to represent Formula BMW USA in the BMW conference.

Telecom merger to impact Nextel Cup?

There's an interesting story by the Associated Press that discusses the repercussions to NASCAR of today's announced merger between Sprint and Nextel.

Although the merger isn't supposed to have an impact on the Nextel Cup for this year, you have to wonder about down the road. After all those years of Winston sponsorship, NASCAR let them off the hook part way into that deal and signed a 10-year title program with Nextel.

They spend billions painting everything yellow and black... and now, just one year in, Nextel is becoming part of something called "Sprint Nextel". When they made their deal with Nextel, NASCAR made it clear that they were looking for a longterm partner to title its top series. They couldn't have had this in mind when they signed the Nextel deal.

STOCKS: Ron Williams passes away

WATERLOO, ON - The Ontario stock car community lost a longtime friend on Saturday (Dec. 10) when Ron Williams, of Waterloo, passed away following a stroke two nights earlier.

During his career in racing, Williams, 60, was a ‘starter’ at Sauble and Varney Speedways, as well as a pit steward and crew member / crew chief on various racing teams.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughters Jackie Langan & Wendy Watson, and four grandchildren (Corey, Kyle, Jessica and Jake).

Sauble Speedway / ALSTAR Series promoter Joe Chisholm held Williams in high regard. “Ron was a dynamite guy,” said Chisholm. “He used to work at Sauble before I bought the track. He was a familiar face in the pits; I got to know him through Tim Ellis. Ron was a big supporter of Tim’s.”

Chisholm respected Williams’ comments when it came to track matters. “He’d keep you on your toes. If he gave you a critical comment, it was from the heart and it was constructive. Every time he spoke, I listened. It’s too bad that he’d gone… He was a really good guy.”

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 2-4 p.m and 7-9 p.m. at the Edward Good Funeral Home in Waterloo (171 King St. South // ph: (519) 745-8445). There will be another visitation at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15, followed by the funeral service (at 11 a.m.) and internment at Parkview Cemetery, in Waterloo.

Inside Track offers its condolences to the family and friends of Ron Williams.

Geldart wins Nat'l Sprint Car Poll!!!

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The North American Sprint Car Poll Awards Reception, held in conjunction with the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Indianapolis on Thursday, honored the winners in the various categories of 360 and 410 sprint car racing. Among those selected was Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) regular and current SOS Champion, Cody Geldart from Mossley.

Geldart was named the National Sprint Car Poll 360 Rookie of the Year Award winner for 2004! This is a significant award that is presented to the rookie sprint car driver across North America in the 360 category who has demonstrated excellence and whose accomplishments were outstanding.

Geldart’s first full season behind the wheel of a full-sized sprint car was outstanding by anyone’s standards, particularly for a sixteen year-old. Not only did he capture the SOS Series Title, he won his first ever sprint car feature and backed it up with four more wins during the season. In fifteen SOS points’ events, Geldart finished in the top five, twelve times showing a level of maturity well beyond his years.

Not only did Geldart have a stellar year with the SOS, he also competed internationally during 2004. In February, Geldart, along with Glenn Styres from Ohsweken made the trip to Florida to compete in the 360 Winter Nationals. Geldart, Styres and Warren Mahoney from Lafroy were also invited to compete at Knoxville in the Brobix Tournament of Champions. In a field of over sixty of the best 360 drivers from around the world, Geldart qualified for the “A-Main” and finished a very respectable twelfth.

Looking forward, Geldart has big plans for 2005. He plans to run the 410’s (c.i.) running the full schedule with the All Stars Circuit of Champions where he will compete for Rookie of the Year honors. In addition, he plans on running some World of Outlaw events plus selected 360 (c.i.) special shows.

During the past five years, SOS drivers have been nominated four times for the National Sprint Car 360 Rookie of the Year Award which is a real tribute to our club. Keith Dempster from Alton was nominated in 2000; Billy Krull of Wheatfield NY was nominated and selected as a co-winner in 2002; and last year, Kyle Patrick from Tilbury joined this select group.

Past winners of the National Sprint Car Poll 360 Rookie of the Year Award include:

  • 2000 – Jeremy Campbell
  • 2001 – Jeff Busby
  • 2002 – Billy Krull / Billy Alley
  • 2003 – Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Congratulations to Geldart and his team for being selected as the winner of this prestigious award! Receiving international recognition is a very special honor indeed, and speaks well for the caliber of drivers who compete on a regular basis with the SOS.

Ask Greasemonkey....

We're trying to get the "Ask Greasemonkey" tech feature rolling and we're looking for reader feedback for questions and issues that you'd like to see discussed.

The issue that is leaving for the printer tomorrow has a lengthy definition of racing terms that are often thrown around without being defined. Greasemonkey has some other ideas for future features, but we're really hoping to be able to deal with specific issues raised by Canadian racers.

So, if you have any suggestions for something you'd like to see covered in an upcoming "Ask Greasemonkey" column, please post them in the Comments area below or drop me a note and I'll pass it on.

And before I get on to other things.... yesterday, I posted a note about a driver and his sponsor. I've been asked by the team that they be allowed to make the formal announcement in their own way.... so I removed my comment.

ChampCar: Alberta bound!

EDMONTON, AB - Today in Edmonton, the organizers of next summer's ChampCar race held a press conference at the Shaw Conference Centre to kick off ticket sales for the event.

ABOVE: Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and our own Paul Tracy were at the press conference...

Organizer Greg MacDonald was on hand, as was Canadian open-wheel star Paul Tracy and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein.

According to Inside Track contributing photographer Perry Nelson, the event drew every scribe and photographer in the region for a total of more than 200 media-types.

Nelson told me that MacDonald plans to turn the event into the "Long Beach of the North". He also noted that the track that will be used (on the site of the Edmonton City Centre Airport) will be much the same as the one CASCAR used when it raced at the facility a few years back.

The support classes for the Edmonton ChampCar race are reported to be: TransAm, Atlantic... and maybe a major event featuring the Legends, although this has yet to be confirmed.

There has not be confirmation, either way, about the status of CASCAR at the Edmonton Indy.

We're in the process of finding out more details about this major racing weekend for the issue of Inside Track that is in the late stages of production (Volume 8, Issue 10).

In an unrelated piece of information, Nelson said that plans are in the works to have the World of Outlaws appear at Bud Park, in Edmonton, in August of 2006.

F1: Bernie losing his grip?

Sportsnet has a story on the news that Bernie Ecclestone lost a court case that could signal the end of his death grip on Formula 1. Ecclestone has ruled the sport for a quarter-century and has made billions, according to reports.

As a result of the London court decision, Ecclestone may have to relinquish control over the sport to three banks, which collectively own three-quarters of Formula 1's commercial rights.

UPDATE: Is Bernie feeling the heat? SpeedTV has a story that says Ecclestone has offered up $500 MILLION dollars to convince the manufacturers not to break away and form their own series. The piece also contains information about Bernie's defeat in the courts.

DIRT Motorsports acquires United Midwestern Promoters AND Stacker 2® Sponsorship

NORMAN, OK – Boundless Motor Sports Racing, Inc., (OTCBB: BMSR) (Boundless) d/b/a DIRT MotorSportsTM, announced that it has purchased United Midwestern Promoters Motorsports, LLC, (UMP), a late model and modified sanctioning body which includes the Stacker 2® Xtreme DirtCar Series.

The title sponsor for the Xtreme DirtCar Series is Stacker 2, a nationally marketed herbal supplement sold at most convenience, health and drug stores.

For the past twenty years UMP has been a major player within the late model and modified circuits. With more than 3,000 registered open wheel modified drivers, the Xtreme DirtCar Series’ sponsors include Stacker 2, The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company®, Gemini Auto Stores® and Lucas Oil®. The Xtreme DirtCar Series also has a television contract with SPEED Channel.

The UMP acquisition strengthens the Company’s position as the largest and most recognized sanctioning body for sprint, late model and modified dirt track racing in the United States. In 2004, an estimated more than 3.5 million fans attended World of Outlaws and DIRT Series sanctioned events to watch the best drivers in the industry perform. Management expects to be able to build upon the success of its 2004 season and anticipates significant attendance growth for 2005.

“As we’ve moved through the year we’ve been able to make strategic acquisitions that are consistent with the goals we established in our business plan,” said Paul A. Kruger, Boundless’ Chairman and CEO. “The UMP acquisition reflects our commitment to building a sanctioning organization which will take the sport of dirt track racing to a new level both in the United States and abroad.”

“The acquisition of UMP will help us to extend our base of DIRT’s weekly sanctioned tracks as we bring on board a large contingent of modified teams,” said Bobby Hartslief, Boundless’ COO. “However, most importantly, the acquisition unifies the late model series and brings with it marketing opportunities to better serve our fan base.”

Di Leo impressive in Daytona Prototype debut

TORONTO, ON - After coming off a great 2004 Star Mazda campaign, open wheel stand out Daniel Di Leo continued to impress. After finishing in the runner-up position in the 2004 Star Mazda championship, Di Leo was offered an opportunity to join four other young open wheel standouts to test for team Ten Motorsports in their Riley / BMW Daytona Prototype.

After weeks of anticipation, Di Leo finally had his opportunity, and made the most of it by quickly getting up to speed. Di Leo posted some of the quickest times of the test and was pleased with his performance.

“I knew it would be difficult to adapt from the open wheel platform that I’ve been accustom to,” Di Leo explained. “This was my first Daytona Prototype experience and with such a busy testing schedule in terms of testing five of North America’s top prospects in one day, track time was very limited. I know that there was more left in the car, but feel that I would have easily reached its potential with a little more time.”

Ten Motorsports team principals were on hand to critique and carefully evaluate the young drivers. The newly established team will look to make an impression in their first year of competition and with such an accomplished group of individuals that form the squad, many feel that they will be championship contenders right from the get go.

“I’ve had the pleasure to work with many of the instrumental people that make up this team,” commented Di Leo. “Their level of professionalism, determination, commitment and experience is truly second to none, and I am absolutely honored to be associated with such a first class organization.”

The test was conducted to fill out the Rolex 24 line-up and perhaps adding a driver from the test to selected races in the up coming season.

F1: STOP THE INSANITY!

Ever feel like you were stuck in the movie 'Groundhog Day'?

How often have we seen the headline: "British GP given 48 hour deadline"?

Well, once again, TSN has a story on its site that says, "The owners of the Silverstone race track in England have been given 48 hours to agree to a contract or there will not be a British Grand Prix in 2005. "

Yawn....... Do you wonder how much money someone has to have before they stop squeezing every penny out of everyone they deal with, at every opportunity? Apparently, Bernie's not there yet.

Why racing fans in the regions (i.e. Canada, Britain, France, etc...) that have been jerked around in this manner even bother to attend these races is beyond me. You'd think people would tire of having to deal with these stupid end-game threats every year. What a business!

Feedback?

Hi gang. First of all, thanks for visiting the 'new & improved' Inside Track Motorsport News Breaking News Blog.

Hopefully, it will offer enough information that you and other fans of Canadian motorsport will make it one of your 'Favourite' stops.

If there is anything you'd like to see on the site, please feel free to chime in with comments. There is a place below each post that allows you to do just that.

We're still hoping to get some help from you as we prepare nominations for the Inside Track Readers' Choice Awards. The announcement about the expansion of the new Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series growing to six tracks in the first few months is also something we'd love to hear from you about. How will this influence racing in southern and central Ontario in 2005 and beyond?

And if you have a topic that you'd like to discuss, drop me a note and we'll start the ball rolling.

Thanks again for stopping by and we hope to hear from you soon.

DRAGS: PMRA confirms first date for '05

CAYUGA, ON - The recently-established Pro Modified Racing Association is pleased to announce its first race venue for the upcoming 2005 season.

The PMRA has confirmed it will hold an event July 1-3, 2005, at Luskville Dragway, situated just outside of Aylmer, Quebec.

“I think this is great thing for drag racing and for Canadian drag strips,” said Luskville owner/promoter Arnie Malcolm. “This event will help bring us to the next level.”

Malcolm, who has operated the NHRA-sanctioned strip for 25 years, added his track has been continually upgraded over the years to present the best in drag racing, and the scheduled PMRA event will provide the stimulus to continue improvements at the track.

“We’re very pleased to get our first race,” stated Bruce Mehlenbacher, PMRA Director of Operations. “We’re looking forward to working with Arnie and his people.”

Over $21,000.00 in guaranteed prize money has been posted, with $5,000.00 to the winner of this event. Only PMRA members will be allowed to compete.

Mehlenbacher, who has been instrumental in the formation of the new series, added the Luskville date is the first set PMRA race to be held in 2005. A five-race series at tracks in Ontario, Quebec, and New York is planned and the list of confirmed PMRA series teams will be announced this week.

The PMRA is a self-governing organization with its own set of technical and safety rules based on the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Pro Modified division. Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class offers a widely-diverse group of race cars with different types of 2000-horsepower engines propelling the cars down the quarter-mile in the 6.20-second range at 230 mph.

LUCAS OIL WWS: Weekend Warrior Series adds three more tracks

HAMILTON, ON - Less than two months after its inaugural public release, the Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series has gone from being announced... to doubling in size.

Today, three more of Ontario's premier stock car racing facilities announced their participation in the WWS, quickly doubling the series’ size in just eight weeks.

The Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series is proud to announce that Sunset Speedway (Stroud), Delaware Speedway (London), and Barrie Speedway (Barrie) have committed to themselves to the WWS and to the rejuvenation and strengthening of grassroots racing programs.

The three new tracks join Lucas Oil Flamboro Speedway (Hamilton), Peterborough Speedway and Kawartha Speedways (both in Peterborough) in this co-operative effort.

“We had hoped that this program would make an impact, but we never imagined that it would have been so quickly accepted,” said series administrator Joshua Paxton.

Increased scope of the WWS has forced organizers and sponsors to quickly re-design the format of the series.

The new format will reward the top 40 home track Late Models in the province with a shared $102,000 points fund.

In 2005, the Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series will offer two 'conferences' of competition across the province.

Each conference will offer a $51,000 cash points fund, rewarding the top 20 drivers in the conference, in addition to the individual home track points funds.

Sunset, Barrie and Peterborough Speedways will make up one conference as they all have committed to running a Limited Late Model division as their premier class.

Kawartha Downs, Flamboro, and Delaware Speedways will collectively create the second conference, each running a Late Model sportsman division as their premier class.

The conference concept seemed a natural fit as it succeeded in accomplishing two important goals: 1) bringing Ontario race tracks together in terms of rulebooks to allow drivers the opportunity to visit other facilities on their off-nights; and 2) rewarding the greatest number of drivers possible for their support of weekly grassroots racing shows with a significant award.

Regarding rules packages, the current rule books are not identical, but efforts will continue to bring the rules packages together over the coming seasons to minimize the necessary changes to run competitively when visiting other speedways.

Track promoters and tech officials will be meeting to discuss changes and allowances, but rules decisions will be left to each participating track’s own discretion.

There is recognition that each of the facilities is a different and distinct entity, and that what works well at one may not be universal.

While information will continue to be openly shared and improvements made, each facility will also be encouraged to offer its own identity while remaining consistent with Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series practices.

One example of an agreed practice would be that if a driver were to be suspended from one WWS facility, he/she would not be permitted to race at any other WWS facility until the conclusion of that suspension.

The posted $102,000 point fund is the largest single grassroots point fund offered in Canada.

The Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series fund is designed to reward the greatest supporters and competitors of the grassroots shows, starting at $1600 for 20th position, a figure usually reserved for a top five finisher.

Each track will be looking to actively promote the drivers supporting their weekly shows, with hopes of re-creating the local “heroes versus villains” storylines that have disappeared in recent years as hometown front runners leave their roots to ‘chase the money'.

It is the goal of the WWS to create a ‘chase for the cup’ as the 2005 Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series overall champion will be the inaugural winner of the Lucas Cup, and crowned the overall Ontario champion.

NASCAR: Jack Daniel's to sponsor RCR / Blaney for '05 Cup effort

NEW YORK, NY - The Jack Daniel Distillery announced today it has entered into a partnership with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) as the primary sponsor of the No. 07 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series with veteran driver Dave Blaney and crew chief Philippe Lopez.

“We are thrilled to be making this announcement and look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship with RCR,” said Mike Keyes, senior vice president of Brown-Forman Beverages and global general manger for Jack Daniel’s. “Richard Childress is a legend in NASCAR racing and we believe that this is the beginning of an excellent partnership. Putting together two iconic brands like Jack Daniel’s and RCR opens up a wealth of opportunities and we couldn’t be more excited for our consumers, fans and everyone who loves this sport.”

The company applauded NASCAR’s decision to allow distilled spirits sponsorships next year in the NEXTEL Cup. Keyes noted that the company’s marketing, advertising and public relations campaigns have always been grounded in responsibility and that will continue with the RCR sponsorship.

“This sponsorship makes sense from a business standpoint – and it also makes sense from a responsibility standpoint,” continued Keyes. “We will be promoting our key message, “Pace Yourself, Drink Responsibly” on a recurring basis and, like everything we do, our marketing will be directed to adult audiences of legal drinking age.”

Blaney, the 1995 World of Outlaws sprint car champion, is a veteran of 163 NEXTEL Cup Series starts since 1992. The 42-year-old Hartford, Ohio native began his tenure with RCR in June at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, taking over the reigns of the No. 30 Chevrolet. He was instrumental in advancing the program to a new plateau and was immediately on Childress’ short list to be the team’s full-time pilot in 2005.

“I couldn’t be more excited about representing the Jack Daniel’s brand for RCR next season,” said Blaney. “Promoting responsibility and moderation are hallmarks of Jack Daniel’s and those are exactly the messages we want to convey -- not only to Jack Daniel’s consumers but to NASCAR fans all over the world. We have a great platform in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series to continue this very important message of responsibility. We’ve got a great team in place with Philippe leading the way. We’re looking forward to running up front right out of the box with the No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet at Daytona in February.”

Childress is a nine-time NASCAR championship team owner with more than 125 victories. RCR was the first NASCAR organization to win championships in the NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series and Truck Series.

In 2005, RCR will continue to field three teams in NASCAR’s top division with Blaney wheeling the No. 07 Jack Daniel’s entry, Kevin Harvick driving the No. 29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet and Jeff Burton moving to the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Monte Carlo.

“We’re thrilled to enter into such a landmark agreement with Jack Daniel’s,” commented Richard Childress, president and CEO of RCR. “The folks at Jack Daniel’s have prided themselves on excellence since 1866. What’s most impressive to me is that the company not only strives to put a superior product into the hands of its consumers, but they advance a positive and responsible message to the public. We’re going to focus on the same goals. RCR will provide outstanding equipment on the race track and promote responsibility at the same time.”

The No. 07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet will make its debut Feb., 20, 2005, at Daytona International Speedway.

KARTING: Mike Vincec Season Review

STOUFFVILLE, ON – For the past 11 months, 13-year-old Mike Vincec has competed in his high powered First Kart across North America. Focusing on the Snap-On Stars of Karting Championship (SoK) and the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship (SRFKC), Vincec filled his off weekends with several other national and regional level events.

Competing in 52 finals throughout the ’04 season, Vincec and his BIG Race Team scored nine feature wins, 19 podium positions, 29 top fives and 45 top ten results. Competing in the entire Stars of Karting Championship, Vincec carded the 10th place position in the Eastern championship with a strong run at the season finale finishing in 7th place.

Vincec and his BIG Race Team also competed in all five rounds of the SRFKC fairing extremely well. Doing battle in the Formula Junior, Rotax Junior and Junior Heavy classes, Vincec had his SRFKC weekends jam packed. The young Canadian had ups and downs throughout the season including his demanding 80cc shifter victory at Mosport to his carburetor problems in Sutton which forced him to retire from the pole before receiving the green flag.

With four wins and five top five results, Vincec claimed the runner up position in both the Formula Junior and Rotax Junior classes as well as 4th place in the Junior Heavy category. In the latter half of the ’04 season, Vincec hooked up with First Kart tuner Mike Maurini and the duo claimed several victories and podium positions together. Vincec also claimed the $500 GM Winners Circle Award at the SRFKC which was presented to the driver judged to have displayed outstanding competition skills and sportsmanship.

Never wanting to take a weekend off, the BIG Race Team went to their local Mosport Kart Club to gather as much seat time as possible and to perform some testing for the National series events. Garnering several victories through out the year, Vincec was a threat to take the checkered each and every time he was on the track. When the season came to a close in early October, Vincec managed a 5th and 6th place result in the Junior Heavy and 80cc Junior classes respectively.

The Stouffville, ON resident plans to start off the ’05 season the same way he did in 2004. The BIG Race Team will travel south to Daytona Beach, FL to compete in the World Karting Association (WKA) season opener which will take place in the infield of Daytona International Speedway.

“2004 was a good year for me but I am ready to get on with 2005,” explained the excited Vincec. “It will be tough, but I know that we can run up front and contend for victories and championships in every race and series that we compete in.” With the ’05 schedule not yet finalized, Vincec is expected to announce competition in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship, the WKA Manufactures Cup and the Snap-On Stars of Karting Championship.

In '05 Mike will continue on in the junior category as 2006 will be a senior option year for the young Canadian. Vincec will go all out and compete for several championships in most of the pro series across the nation. With big plans and tons of potential, Vincec is a name that you will hear a lot of in the next 12 months.

Mike Vincec would like to thank BIG Racing, Pilot Race Gear, GoDecalZone.com, First Kart North America, Arnold Engines, Hi-Tech Performance Race Engines, TXM Race Engines, The ATC Corral, Cosmo Communications and Tri-V Manufacturing.

For more information on Mike Vincec and the BIG Race Team, please contact Team Manager Mary Vincec from the information on www.mikev.ca.

CHAMPCAR: Canucks Valiante & Ranger Top Rookie Test at Sebring

SEBRING, FL - Two of Canada's hottest open-wheel racers got the chance to shine at Sebring International Raceway yesterday.

Michael Valiante, who made his Champ Car World Series debut at the season-ending race in Mexico City driving a Walker Racing Reynard, was unofficially the fastest of five Toyota Atlantic Series drivers taking part.

This time, however, Valiante was behind the wheel of one of Dale Coyne Racing’s Lola chassis, which he put to great use setting a 51.88-second lap around the abandoned airfield.

Eighteen-year-old Andrew Ranger got his first-ever taste of a 750-horsepower Champ Car, turning 133 laps in a Forsythe Racing Lola. However, Ranger didn’t let his unfamiliarity with the racecar prevent him from setting the second-fastest lap of the day, a 52.07.

Both drivers were reportedly very satisfied with how the tests went, and hopefully one – or both – could be looking at a full-time CCWS ride for 2005.

Also at Sebring was 17-year-old James Hinchcliffe, who captured the Formula BMW Series Rookie of the Year Award in 2004. Hinchcliffe was testing with Polestar Racing in an effort to get familiarized with the Toyota Atlantic car before graduating to the series later this year.

CRC: RallySport Ontario President offers his perspective on CARS' termination of the RDG contract

A message from the President of RSO - November 29, 2004

Ray Felice // President Rallysport Ontario // Ontario Regional Director, CARS

I apologize for not informing the membership of RSO before this but I had to wait until all parties involved published their official statements and that only just happened a few days ago.

I have been fielding calls and emails over the past week on the topic of the CARS / RDG termination. All asking what happened? What was my position on it? What are we left with?

So I thought it would be best to post an official response from me directly to the members of Rallysport Ontario to help clarify.

In the 5-year contract there was a clause that allowed either party to terminate the contract after the first year, if notice was given by October 31, 2004.

On Oct. 18/04 the president of CARS asked for and received from RDG an extension to the termination clause date to Nov. 08/04.

On Nov. 08/04 RDG asked for an extension of the termination date to Friday Nov. 12/04.

The President of CARS agreed to this extension as RDG said they were still working out further details of the next few years but were confident a positive answer would come.

On Thurs. Nov 11/04 the president of CARS attempted to contact all the board members. The President was able to reach three of the board members that evening but not myself. I spoke with him on the morning of Fri. Nov. 12/04.

It was on the morning of Friday Nov. 12/04 that the president said he wanted to discuss with RDG three changes that he felt needed to be added in to protect not only CARS but also RDG. He explained the three to me. These can be found on the CARS web site under News tab in the information bulletin dated, Nov. 18, 2004. I gave my responses on each one verbally on the phone.

-The clause about failing to honour commitments was a protection clause and I did not see a problem discussing it with RDG and get their feelings on it, as it would also protect them in case the series could not put on all the events.

-The clause about RDG consulting with the President on “all matters relating to sponsor negotiations and media campaigns” was in my opinion a bit strong. I said they could inform us, but once they got closer to an agreement or final proposal. Not for every phone call or cold call as this would be a wasteful use of time.

-The third point was that the President wanted to “renegotiate the financial relationship between the parties.” CARS knew at the start of the year we would possibly lose money in 2004 as we had set the budget before having any sponsor agreement in place. When I was told this I mentioned that I did not feel RDG was in a position to do this as they themselves were likely losing money. As some new companies do, it takes a couple years to break out of the red and into the black. It was a five-year plan and contract and I believe that RDG invested a lot of their own funds to keep the plan going with hopes of getting a return on their investment in the later part of the contract. The CARS president even said to me that he did not see how RDG was making money. If this is so, I asked how we could ask for more funds to help out the CARS financial situation. We discussed a possible redistribution of some funds. I also suggested we look at “other ways of generating income for CARS as RSO had to this year when the membership fee structure changed.”

At 8:30pm that evening the CARS office sent out an email to the four board members that were available (one was away and not able to be contacted). In that email it was also stated that it was realized that “if we terminate the agreement, we could be without the funds to televise the CRC for next year and we would risk losing other sponsors as well as Subaru from the sport.” I responded immediately reminding of my thoughts and adding to them and strongly opposing the termination of the contract with RDG. The reasons I stated were that I was certain that if we did we would run a very high risk of losing Subaru completely as they would possibly look upon CARS as being short sighted. I could not have put it more clearly. Why we would not ask for another extension is beyond me.

At 11:14pm that evening the CARS office sent out an emailed letter to terminate the contract explaining, “CARS would like to continue its relationship with RDG in 2005 and beyond. However, there are three changes that CARS requires in the CARS-RDG Marketing and Broadcast Rights Agreement.” The letter finished stating that CARS would withdraw its option to terminate the agreement if a mutually acceptable agreement was reached between CARS and RDG. RDG, after consulting with its partners and sponsors, decided to accept the termination as they were not prepared to make the required changes requested by CARS.

I am truly sorry to see Subaru leave the Canadian Rally Championship. Their support over the years to not only the series but to other competitors was tremendous and will truly be missed. Their team was always helpful to others in need and the management, drivers and co-drivers were all first class.

We now must look forward to 2005 and put on the best championship we possibly can.

CARS is actively seeking a new marketing company to assist in securing new sponsorship for the 2005 championship. We are also working on contingency programs to further assist the competitors.

Ray Felice

Ontario Regional Director, CARS

Checkered Flag: To Norris McDonald of the T.O. Star

I'm heading off to the ALSTAR drivers' meeting, but just wanted to post a 'Checkered Flag' to Norris McDonald of the Toronto Star.

There is also a 'Checkered Flag' for Norris in Volume 8, Issue 9, which just came back from the printer yesterday. In the past, we've been quick to point out the way that the Canadian mainstream media ignores our homegrown racers and series. Not this guy.

Every Saturday, Norris' column in the Star Wheels Section (Page 2) delivers the goods. A few weeks ago, it was a piece on SOS champ Cody Geldart. Today, he literally lists every track and series champion. Wow.

If you get a chance, drop him a note to let him know you appreciate what he's doing. Better yet, do some digging and let his editor know that he's doing something that should continue. Norris is doing something that deserves our support!

NASCAR BACKS CASCAR

INSIDE TRACK EXCLUSIVE // BY GREG MACPHERSON // NOVEMBER 17, 2004: TORONTO, ON - On Nov. 16, NASCAR Canada and CASCAR put out a long-awaited press release heralding a “multi-year operational and marketing agreement” between NASCAR and CASCAR. The title on the document characterized the relationship as a “strategic alliance”.

In the release, NASCAR COO George Pyne said, “NASCAR will lend operational and marketing expertise to help grow Canada’s only national stock car series.” CASCAR President Tony Novotny said, “NASCAR’s experience and resources will strengthen and support racing in Canada, while establishing a foundation for further growth.”

Although those sentiments are somewhat vague, it has been clear for some time that the deal would likely not include the outright purchase of CASCAR. This release confirms that. In fact, it’s possible fans won’t be able to see much of a difference – on the surface – when they attend a CASCAR Super Series race next season.

The cars will be the same. Most of the familiar faces will be back. And unless there is a new title sponsor announced between now and the Delaware opener, the tour will likely once again be called the “CASCAR Super Series”.

But for all the things the deal ‘is not’, there are some very important things that it ‘is’. This arrangement guarantees CASCAR’s future and its unchallenged position as Canada’s National stock car tour. There will never again be an ISA to threaten CASCAR, now that it has NASCAR in its corner.

The deal also opens the doors for CASCAR to be marketed as a partner of one of the biggest and most successful motorsports operations in the world. While increased marketability, credibility and stability are all intangibles, they are arguably invaluable in the context of CASCAR’s future.

Speaking on behalf of CASCAR, Richard Coughlin explained what the NASCAR deal means to the series. “NASCAR has the greatest depth of resources of any sanctioning body in North America. This agreement allows us to tap into those resources in the form of marketing the series, bringing new sponsors to the series and the general management of the series. It’s a long-term agreement aimed to helping us grow the sport in Canada.”

Pressed for details of the agreement, however, Coughlin toed the party line. “We’re not at liberty to discuss the exact details of the contract. NASCAR has made a long-term commitment to the market and we cannot speak to the specific terms of the relationship.”

Asked if racers and fans will be able to notice a difference at the track next season, Coughlin replied, “Where you can expect to see a difference is the introduction of new sponsors and corporate partners, which will allow us to initiate new programs that fans and racers will be able to see. That’s not going to be in the form of different cars or rules, but you may see it in other areas in terms of presentation and exciting new interactive programs for the fans that will increase visibility with an eye to promoting the series and getting more media attention.”

According to Coughlin, this is a major event in the history of CASCAR. “We’re very excited to have them in our corner. The NASCAR brand inspires a lot of confidence, which will make it easier for us to attract partners. We are in the exciting position of having more than one company considering signing on as title sponsor. Another benefit to fans and racers is that we have a long-term agreement with NASCAR and a solid direction, which is a far cry from the past few years when we’ve faced significant challenges… It changes our direction from being somewhat defensive to going on the offence and growing the sport.”

Coughlin also confirmed that most of the familiar faces will be back in ’05. “Tony [Novotny] is staying in the role of President, while NASCAR is going to provide support in all areas of the business. I can’t tell you about any new faces you’ll see at the track or in the office, but you’ll certainly still see Tony, myself and Chrissy [Hughes] with the series in 2005.”

While he has always raced with solid sponsorship, CASCAR veteran Mark Dilley is excited about CASCAR’s deal with NASCAR. “It’s big. It’s huge for Canadian motorsports. It’s something we haven’t seen in about 10 years,” said the Whitlock Motorsports racer. “We don’t know all the details. But NASCAR isn’t dumb and they’re positioning themselves for expansion in the future. They believe it’s a good series [CASCAR] with a good foundation. As far as our sponsors are concerned, everything I’ve heard is that everyone is very happy with the news.”

Dilley, a former short track promoter, knows what it takes for a sponsor to be able to participate in racing. He believes the deal with NASCAR will be a big boost for the teams and sponsors. “This makes it easier for sponsors to justify their investment… My advice to any sponsor is to jump in while it’s still at the bargain price it’s been at for years, because it won’t be that way for long. There’s no way it will.”

In closing, Dilley offered congratulations to Novotny. “It’s gotta be a great feeling to see what he’s built to the point where it is so respected that NASCAR would support it.”

Randy Paul of NASCAR Canada said the agreement underscores NASCAR’s commitment to Canadian racing. “It started with two ‘flags’ – at St-Eustache and Delaware – and that was followed up with the formation of NASCAR Canada for communications and marketing. And this initiative clearly shows the commitment that George Pyne and NASCAR have made to support grassroots racing throughout North America.”

In recent years, CASCAR Super Series races have been broadcast on Rogers SPORTSNET, which appears to be a conflict with NASCAR Canada’s TSN roots. However, Joel Robinson of James Robinson Associates Ltd. told Inside Track that he is already in negotiations with SPORTSNET and SPEED regarding Super Series broadcasts in 2005. Commenting on the broadcast situation, Randy Paul said, “When and if the rights become available, we’ll review and consider the opportunity at that time. TSN has televised CASCAR in the past, so there’s a chance TSN could be a broadcast partner in the future.”

CRC: SUBARU RALLY TEAM CANADA 'RETIRES' AFTER '04

NOVEMBER 23, 2004: MISSISSAUGA, ON - After 12 years of competition in the Canadian Rally Championship Series, where Subaru has won the Canadian Manufacturers’ Championship for the past five consecutive years and six times in total, Subaru Canada Inc. has decided that it will not compete in the 2005 season.

According to Brian Hyland, director, sponsorships and distribution for Subaru Canada, Inc., “There were a lot of factors that led to this decision. Subaru invested a great deal of money and much effort in the series over the past six years while we were the title sponsor. We also tried to assist the sanctioning body, the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) in every way we could to make this a more viable proposition for sponsors, event organizers and competitors alike.”

Subaru has sponsored or presented the championship series along with Yokohama from 1998 until 2003. This year Subaru was the primary financial contributor to the series because Yokohama decided not to continue its association with CARS after the 2003 season. “Because there was no other major sponsor this year, Subaru’s costs increased dramatically,” Hyland said. “Along with the costs associated with running the team, it became nearly prohibitive, but Subaru would have continued if there had been a solid marketing plan in place for 2005 from CARS that included additional sponsors.”

One of Subaru’s concerns had been the series’ lack of a professional marketing approach. In 2003, CARS made an effort to put together a marketing company to promote the National series, but it did not last the full year. For 2004, Subaru insisted that a solid marketing plan had to be developed in order for it to continue. Subaru worked in conjunction with Jud Buchanan and Keith Townsend, who formed Rally Development Group (RDG), a marketing and promotions company. Its goal was to work with all of the individual rally event organizers to increase the professionalism and overall image of the series and to bring more sponsors into the series.

In January of this year, RDG and CARS entered into a five-year marketing and broadcast rights agreement. RDG took over marketing of the series and CARS continued to look after all the regulatory aspects of the sport. “We knew Buchanan and Townsend from both rallying and other business associations,” Hyland explained. Buchanan was the former motorsport manager for Yokohama Tires and Operations manager for CASCAR, while Townsend has been the organizer of the Rally of the Tall Pines for a number of years. “We were really shocked when CARS terminated its agreement with RDG, especially after all the positive comments from competitors and organizers about the great things that they had seen happen in 2004 and the fact that RDG was in final negotiations to bringing another major sponsor on board for the 2005 season.

“I spoke with both CARS and ASN-Canada FIA about the situation. They reviewed the situation with RDG, but the difficulties could not be resolved. Without a strong marketing approach to the series, it doesn’t make sense for Subaru to continue to put money into it. We need to see a return on our investment.”

The withdrawal from the sponsorship and the decision to not field a team for the 2005 season does not mean that Subaru’s 13-year association with rallying in Canada will end. Hyland said, “We will continue to be involved with the sport but to what extent, we can’t currently say. We will definitely be there with a contingency programme for all the Subarus currently competing.”

Subaru has won the most Manufacturers’ titles in the series history. It has won multiple championships in many of the series classes, eight overall Canadian Drivers Championships, as well as many North American Rally Cup Championships.

CRC: CARS RESPONDS TO SUBARU EXIT

STATEMENT FROM C.A.R.S. // NOVEMBER 24, 2004: STOUFFVILLE, ON - Subaru Canada, presenting sponsor of the Canadian Rally Championship 2004, announced today that it will not be returning next year as series sponsor or with its official Subaru Canada rally team. Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) wants to thanks Subaru Canada for its involvement in the sport for the past six years and to congratulate all the Subaru members for the major successes achieved with the rally team and their crew in the series.

During those six years as sponsor of the Canadian Rally Championship, with Yokohama from 1998 to 2003 and alone in 2004, Subaru has won a majority of events and titles. Subaru Canada’s involvement has been very valuable for the sport, helping the series rise to an higher level of achievement and increasing the visibility of the sport in the country.

CARS, as the sanctioning body for rally in Canada, also wishes to announce that there will be a championship in 2005. The series will consist of six events; all with very capable and experienced organizing committees. With the necessary financial resources and a large body of skilled and committed competitors behind it, CARS is presently working to find partners for the development of the series, including new championship sponsors and a firm to head the commercial aspects of the series.

The Canadian Rally Championship has aired on major English and French-language sport networks across the country for the last 10 years. It is the only national motorsports series that has been able to secure television visibility for an extended period of time. The Canadian Rally championship will be presented in 2005 for the 49th year in a row.
