Volkswagen has just official unveiled the all new Golf. A model which to Volkswagen goes to its very core. So far more than 26 million Golfs have been sold worldwide and with the new Golf only months away, sales are only set to increase.

“This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before”, says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board at Volkswagen AG.

Pricing for the Australian market is yet to be released by the entry price for the German market is around 16,500 Euros ($28,000).

One of the areas which VW has improved on significantly, to not only meet new tougher EU-5 standards but also to win over more buyers, is fuel economy and emissions. The German giant says innovative engines and transmission technologies have lowered fuel consumption by up to 28 percent in the range.

All models in the new Golf range now satisfy limits of the future EU-5 standard.

2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance

VW hasn't released any info on the car you see here, which is called the Golf GTI Performance design study, so we'll call it like we see it. A black-and-copper checkered flag motif adorns the hatch, which is enhanced with a widebody kit, lowered suspension, and the expected wheel/tire upgrade. Out back, the GTI's rear bumper cover is covered with more grillework than you'll find on the rump of a Lamborghini Gallardo.

2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance-12008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance-2A pair of giant exhaust outlet cutouts are also built into the corners. And speaking of Lamborghinis, VW has fitted the Golf GTI Performance with the dreaded "Lambo doors," which look predictably ridiculous here. The exterior color scheme carries through to the passenger cabin, which gets a 2+1 sport seating arrangement and what appears to be a substantial audio system install. Not our cup 'o tea, but it'll probably go over very well with the VW tuners who take part in the WörtherSEMA... er.. Wörthersee Tour.

Volkswagen Golf Plus Dune

Summer must be on the way, for the rough-and-tumble faux offroaders are out in force.

Following the Renault Scenic Conquest and the Seat Altea Freetrack to the plastic body panel party is Volkswagen's effort: the Golf Plus Dune.

Volkswagen Golf Plus DuneVolkswagen Golf Plus Dune 2Yes, it's an ever-so-hardy variant of the Golf Plus, designed to appeal to people who like the countryside but wish it wasn't full of scary things like wasps and nettles.

Ticking the obligatory boxes, the Golf Plus Dune gets a raised ride height, plastic front and rear guards, silver roof rails and something worryingly described as 'durable plastic rubbing strips'. We're not even going to ask.

It's powered by VW's 1.9-litre turbodiesel, which will return a countryside-friendly 50.4mpg while reaching 62mph in a hedgehog-scaring 12.1 seconds.

Priced at £18,495, the Golf Plus Dune is to be strictly limited to a production run of 400 vehicles.

Volkswagen Rolls Out Golf Variant Sportline

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The Volkswagen Jetta wagon has been missing from the U.S. lineup since 2004, but it will reappear shortly with the debut of the 2008 Jetta SportWagen in September. The Jetta SportWagen is the U.S. counterpart of the Golf Variant Sportline, which VW unveiled on Monday in Wolfsburg.

Volkswagen Golf Variant SportlineVolkswagen Golf Variant Sportline 2A diesel version of the 2008 Jetta SportWagen will arrive in U.S. showrooms in January, equipped with a 2.0-liter clean diesel engine that makes 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. VW of America Spokesman Keith Price said the automaker is anticipating EPA numbers of 40 mpg in city driving and 60 mpg on the highway for the diesel SportWagen. The vehicle will be available in all 50 states, marking the first time a diesel Jetta will be available nationwide since 1999, he noted. The gas-engine Jetta Sportwagen will get a 2.5-liter inline-5 that makes 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque and is linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic transmission.

Price said pricing has not yet been set for the 2008 Jetta SportWagen, but added that it is expected to cost about $1,500 more than the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, which starts at $17,130, including a $640 destination charge.

The Golf Variant Sportline, which comes with a standard panorama sunroof, will hit showrooms in Germany on June 1. It is about 6.2 inches longer than its predecessor and offers increased cargo capacity.
