Aston Martin Rapide Information

The Aston Martin Rapide is a four-door, high-performance sport saloon, which British luxury marque Aston Martin introduced in early 2010 to compete with the Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, and Porsche Panamera along with the upcoming Audi A7 and Lamborghini Estoque. It was first presented as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in 2006. The Rapide name is a reference to the Lagonda Rapide, a saloon car produced by Lagonda, now part of Aston Martin. The car is based on an Aston Martin DB9. The base price for the Aston Martin Rapide is $199,950 (USD)and the first cars were rolled out in May 2010.

The Rapide is built at a dedicated plant at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria. Production began in 2010 and the factory plans to build 2,000 per year.

The production version features a full-length glass roof and LED light bars on the rear end, two firsts for Aston Martin.

Aston Martin has officially presented model Rapide

On Tuesday company Aston Martin has officially presented the new model – four-door coupe Rapide which is created on motives of the conceptual car with the same name for the first time shown three years ago on motor show in Detroit. Judging by the first photo, the serial car does not differ almost from a prototype: the rear bumper only has slightly changed, and also additional lateral air intakes in a front part of a body have disappeared.



As it was informed earlier, five-metre Rapide is constructed on the platform of model DB9 extended on 255 millimetres and it is equipped six-litre 12 cylinders motor capacity of 470 horsepowers (600 Nanometers) which is aggregated from six-high-speed automatic transmission Touchtronic with possibility of a manual gear shift. The official information on dynamic characteristics Aston Martin Rapide while is not present, however it is supposed that to "hundred" car will be dispersed for 4,5 seconds, and its maximum speed will make 290 kilometres per hour. Novelty manufacture at the Austrian enterprise of company Magna Steyr will begin already during the current year, and the first commodity copies will appear in interiors of dealers in 2010. According to some information, cost of base version Rapide in Great Britain will make about 140 thousand pounds sterling.

The 2010 Aston Martin Rapide is now undergoing high-speed tests on the Nürburgring test track in Germany. And like the previous prototypes, this Rapide test mule has only minimal camouflage.

The lack of a cover reveals an interesting new design twist — a roof that's nearly all glass. There are a few pieces of equipment attached to this particular prototype, but it's a relatively unobstructed design otherwise. A few other luxury sedans have similar setups, so this appears to be an emerging trend in the segment.

Like the current range of Aston Martin coupes, the Rapide sedan sounds as good as it looks. Not a surprise really, as the Rapide will use essentially the same 5,935cc V12 as the DB9. Output is expected to jump significantly, though, so expect to see the final number approaching 500 horsepower. The corporate ZF-built six-speed automatic transmission is the likely gearbox and it will send the power to the rear wheels.

Production of the 2010 Aston Martin Rapide is expected to start in Graz, Austria, in late 2009. Supplier Magna Steyr will build up to 2,000 Rapides a year under contract with Aston Martin.

Pegged for a late-2009 introduction as a 2010 model, the $400,000 DB9-based Rapide will battle the likes of Porsche's Panamera four-door due out at about the same time.

Spy Shot: Aston Martin Rapide

With its Le Mans racing program soon to be bolstered by GT2 and LMP1 entries, and with sales of its ever-so-desirable GTs ever increasing, Aston Martin is preparing to add the four-door Rapide to its production line-up. And if this spy shot is any indication, things seem to be moving along nicely.

Aston was anticipated to decide by year's end where the Rapide would be built. Although the company just moved to a new facility in Gaydon, the automaker was reportedly in discussions with a number of smaller contractors – including Pininfarina, Karmann, Magna-Steyr and Valmet – over potentially outsourcing the Rapide's manufacturing. As we already know, these private coachbuilders are all in dire need of the contract.

Confirmation that Aston would build the Rapide was one of the first things its new owners did after acquiring the company from Ford, and we're looking forward to seeing the production version in the flesh after seeing this spy shot.
