C-Class gets classier

Mercedes gives compact exec latest family look, stop-start boosts economy across range

It’s a C change at Mercedes. The company has brought its C-Class up to scratch, with a new look and improved efficiency.

A revised grille and new front bumper, featuring LED running lights, give the four-year-old compact exec the latest family look. But the biggest updates have taken place under the skin.

Not only does the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission get revised gear ratios, but all models now have stop-start as standard. That means fuel economy is up to 31 per cent better across the range.

The most efficient variant is the manual C220 CDI diesel, which promises 58.8mpg, plus a low CO2 output of 117g/km. The C350 features a fresh 302bhp petrol V6, and claims 41.5mpg and 159g/km emissions.

To reduce weight, aluminium bonnets are fitted across the new line-up, while all models will carry the BlueEFFICIENCY badge.

Also debuting on the C-Class is a raft of safety kit, including a drowsiness detector and lane keep assistance. The fresh dash has a larger multimedia screen with better navigational aids, plus Internet access when stationary.

The revised C-Class is on sale in March. Prices are expected to rise slightly, starting from around £25k.
