RKSport Hyundai Genesis Spied

One of our faithful readers was hanging out a gas station not far from our Detroit offices when he spotted what was clearly a new Hyundai Genesis sedan getting a fill up.

Now seeing Genesis sedans and other Hyundais in various states of camouflage is not out of the ordinary in these parts over since the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) is in the area. This particular Genesis is something a little different though. Notice those indentations in the hood and missing bits of trim? A little digging revealed that this is in fact the car that is being developed in cooperation with RKSport for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November.

RKSport is working on body and suspension modifications for the car, while the engineers at HATCI are working on engine mods. We don't know which engine will be under the hood, although the words "powertrain boosting" were heard from a source. Judging from what looks like a pattern for cutouts in the hood, a turbocharged or supercharged engine seems a possibility. Our article mentions an enhanced version of the 4.6L Tau V8, however, a pressurized version of the 3.8L Lambda V6 isn't out of the question either.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundai has announced its second of three SEMA Genesis coupes (not to be confused with the Sega Genesis game console). This one is a cooperation between the Korean manufacturer and Japanese performance accessory maker HKS.

Those in the tuning know will recognize HKS as turbo specialists, so it's no surprise that this show car will use Hyundai's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The engine receives an HKS GT Turbo upgrade along with new engine internals, an HKS Super Mega Flow intake, and a new exhaust system. Hyundai designed the coupe to be "tuner-friendly" and judging by the long list of accessories being developed by HKS the company has already made a new friend.

We like the subtle look of the HKS Genesis, which is in stark contrast to the busy design recently unveiled by Rhys Millen's team. This red coupe foregoes the usual tuner doo-dads and wings, settling instead for a body kit by Ken Style with grey accents running along the rocker panels. Large, graphite wheels look at home tucked in the coupe's wheel wells and work with a fully adjustable HKS suspension to give the car a ground-hugging stance.

We're eager to see who's responsible for the last Genesis coupe project, as well as the three Genesis sedans that will debut at SEMA. Hopefully HKS will give us an idea of performance numbers at the show as well. We'll have full coverage of the cars from Hyundai and everyone else live from Las Vegas this November.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets web-assisted early unveiling

As some of you might have already heard by now. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been unceremoniously de-cloaked courtesy of MyRide.com and the New Tiburon forums and is now making the rounds online.

The consumer-grade version of the concept shown last year in Los Angeles simply looks fantastic, and with both turbo-four and V6 power on tap, it's ready to make some noise. Unfortunately, we can't tell you the specifics just yet (but rest assured, there's plenty to tell -- and it is good).

Barring any additional unforeseen surprises, we'll have the complete story for you when the car makes its debut this week in New York.

Hyundai Genesis gets new grille just for Detroit, what gives?

When the production version of the Hyundai Genesis was revealed, debate over its styling was a hot topic. Of particular interest to commenters was the grille, dubbed the "Klingon forehead" by some of you, which has a vertical center spine with three horizontal bars that turn down when they meet from either side. We instantly noticed the absence of Hyundai's logo on the grille and surmised that perhaps the Korean automaker felt that the presence of its logo would somehow divert attention away from the levels of luxury and refinement that people might normally associate with Hyundais.

With that in mind, we were surprised to find this Genesis V6 model with a different grille on the floor of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. When asked what it was doing there, Hyundai responded that the badgeless grille is the only Genesis grille for now, but this version was done up as a kind of market research exercise. We were also told that it had been taken out of Hyundai's display before the Detroit Auto Show opened up to the public.

Well, we've decided to help Hyundai figure out which grille is preferred most by consumers. Vote for your preference below and, who knows, Hyundai might be listening.

Hyundai Genesis

Hyundai Genesis will be formally launched in Detroit next week and set to go on sale in the US soon after. Looks good, doesn't it? OK, a bit Lexus-derivative, a bit Merc-ish around the grille, but that's no bad thing.

The Genesis is part of Hyundai's big effort to 'do' the US and, judging by the numbers alone, it's got a good chance. Prices start at under $30,000 for the 3.3-lite V6 version, but it's the 4.6-litre V8 that we really like the sound of.

Driving the rear wheels through a six-speed ZF auto' box, it'll see the Genesis to 60mph in under six seconds thanks to 368bhp of distinctly un-Korean power. It should get round corners too - Hyundai says the Genesis is 14 per cent stiffer than the BMW 5-Series, and has kitted it out with five-link front and rear suspension for good measure.

There's tons of kit on board, from cooled seats and a reversing camera to an eight-inch satnav screen and radar cruise control. In fact, if you can get past the badge - or lack thereof - the Genesis looks like a rather tempting prospect.

Problem is, it's not coming to the UK. A Hyundai spokesman said there are currently no plans to release the Genesis in Europe and, even if there were, none of the current markets are right-hand drive.

More likely we'll see a coupe version of the Genesis, similar to the concept we saw in Las Vegas, some time in 2009. If it keeps that big V8 - and, even better, the £15,000 price tag - we'll be happy.

2007 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept

Hyundai's new Concept Genesis Coupe has been unveiled, as Hyundai plans a production Genesis sedan for January's Detroit auto show and a production coupe for April's New York auto show.

The new 2+2 coupe won't be a replacement for the existing front-drive Tiburon coupe, though, Hyundai's VP for product John Krafcik told Los Angeles audiences. Hyundai's front-drive coupe has too loyal a following to abandon, so Hyundai will eventually offer both front- and rear-drive sports coupes as it adds a performance spin to its lineup.

Hyundai is aiming the Coupe at a gap in the market, between the Infiniti G37 and Mitsubishi Eclipse - the high $20,000 range. And while Ford's Mustang would seem to be a natural competitor, Hyundai's Krafcik confirms that the production Coupe won't be getting a V-8 engine. Instead, a turbocharged four will be the base powerplant; an optional 3.8-liter V-6 will churn out more than 300 hp. Both engines will be offered with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Hyundai estimates a 0-60 mph time of less than six seconds for the six-cylinder version with a manual transmission.

The production version of the Genesis Coupe goes on sale in the spring of 2009.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Coming to L.A.

Hyundai's surprise - or not so much of a surprise, given the key execs on hand - for the SEMA show going on in Las Vegas this week was the release of these sketches of the coupe version of its Genesis concept.
The new two-door will be shown in concept form at the Los Angeles auto show, which opens to the press on Nov. 14.

The Genesis concept bowed in sedan form at the 2007 New York auto show. The new two-door version will be a rear-driver like the four-door version. Hyundai calls these "exaggerated" sketches of what will be a future rear-drive sports coupe from the South Korean automaker.

We're not sure if Hyundai will carry over the Tiburon name to the Genesis - or if Hyundai's global plan for alphanumeric names will apply to U.S. cars - but we do know that this car will first arrive in Asia in late 2008 or 2009, and arrive here in the States for the 2010 model year. A convertible version will follow.Based on the BH/Genesis platform, the new coupe is expected to offer an optional 4.6-liter V-8 as a performance option.

Chastened Hyundai Chairman Makes Charity Pledge in Bid for Clemency

It has become something of a South Korean tradition for companies and executives to make charitable contributions in a bid for clemency following a conviction. So it was not entirely unexpected that Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo on Monday promised a South Korean judge that he still plans to honor his year-old promise to donate $1.1 billion to charity.

Chairman Chung was on the hot seat in court this week as the judge quizzed him about his unfulfilled promise at an appeal hearing yesterday. The embattled executive was sentenced to three years in prison earlier this year for embezzlement and breach of trust. But he has been out on bail as he makes his appeal and continues to run the company.

"I have thought about it and I am glad to be given a chance to serve society," Chung said, according to Reuters.

Chung, who is one of the wealthiest men in South Korea, says he has made a $64 million cash donation to charity. He said he will donate the rest of the reparation gift by 2014 to fund an opera house in Seoul, other cultural facilities and environmental initiatives.

He was arrested in April 2006 on allegations that the automaker and its affiliates set up slush funds to pay for political favors.
