2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia arrives humongously revised from the already beefy first-generation. The Timberland Mica (Metallic Green) example that Toyota lent us for a week definitely deserves whatever size-related superlatives you can dream up.

2008 Toyota Sequoia LimitedIt's big, it's powerful, it doesn't sip fuel. There is a need and a market for this type of vehicle, however. If Sequoia buyers don't actually utilize its considerable capabilities, that's not Toyota's fault. This year marks the migration of Toyota's full size Sport Utility to the same mechanicals that underpin the new Tundra, ladling on capability to an already fairly competent and refined vehicle.

2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4

You would expect a sport-utility that measures 17 feet long, stands 6 feet tall, carries eight passengers and is hooked up to a 5.7-liter V8, four-wheel drive and 20-inch wheels to be called Sequoia. Talk about full-size! Talk about lumbering! There was a time when the Sequoia felt like a 7/8ths-scale SUV, but now that this all-new edition is based on the full-size Tundra pickup, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia is a 6,000-pound, card-carrying member of the elite ExpeNaviBurbaLade club.

2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x42008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4-2That's why we didn't expect that this 2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 would ride so comfortably and handle so delicately, or that it would prove so quick with its 381-horsepower V8. It's a major accomplishment to get something this large to drive like something small. The new Sequoia might have the backbone of a simple pickup truck, but it could be the perfect full-size luxury sport-utility.

Big Power
To motivate the 5,985-pound, four-wheel-drive Sequoia Limited, Toyota went to the correct parts bin. Step one was to install the potent 381-hp 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed automatic from the 2008 Toyota Tundra. In fact, the Tundra and Sequoia have been developed in parallel, so nearly everything from the Sequoia's front bumper to the B-pillar is structurally identical to the Tundra.

Not only is the 5.7 a more powerful and capable V8 than the Sequoia SR5's standard 276-hp, 4.7-liter V8, but also the combination of the big V8 and its six-speed automatic is actually more fuel-efficient than the 4.7-liter V8 and its five-speed automatic. Our Sequoia Limited 4x4 (which runs on 87-octane fuel) earned a combined average of 14 mpg, backing up the EPA's official rating of 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway.

With few exceptions, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 appears to be the best all-around eight-passenger SUV available. Its roots may go back to the truck-based sport-utility vehicle, but the 2008 Toyota Sequoia has all the comfort and conveniences of a minivan and it doesn't drive like a truck. This is a huge step forward in SUV evolution.

Sure, this test truck wears a $56,000 price tag, so it will leave some people wondering why it doesn't wear a Lexus badge, and indeed maybe it should. If that's the case, keep in mind that $24,000 separates a base SR5 2WD, at just under $35,000, and the fully optioned Platinum for $58,795.

2007 L.A. Auto Show Environmental Activist Disrupts Unveiling of Beefier 2008 Toyota Sequoia

LOS ANGELES — The 2008 Toyota Sequoia's debut at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show was marred by a belligerent encounter between a Toyota executive and an environmental activist posing as another industry official on Wednesday.

2008 Toyota Sequoia2008 Toyota Sequoia-2The Chicago Tribune reported that the activist, who was not named, is a member of the San Francisco-based Rainforest Action Network. He asked Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales USA vice president and general manager, why Toyota is suing California over carbon-dioxide emissions regulations.

Police escorted the man outside the convention center, where he chewed his credential in his mouth before handing it over. The company is not expected to press charges.

In the meantime, Toyota showed off a second-generation Sequoia with a new body, new interior, new chassis and a new optional 5.7-liter V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The new engine churns out 381 horsepower, which Toyota notes is "one of the highest outputs in this vehicle class." The carryover 4.7-liter V8 is still standard on the big SUV.

The EPA says the 2008 Sequoia equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 returns 13 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the 4.7-liter V8 returns 13 mpg in city driving and 16 mpg on the highway. The new Sequoia is bigger than the previous model, with increases in overall length, width and height.

What this means to you: The Sequoia has been beefed up nicely. Now someone needs to do likewise for security at auto shows. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

2008 Toyota Sequoia

LOS ANGELES — The all-new, three-row Toyota Sequoia is bigger inside and out and borrows heavily from the technicals of the Tundra pickup truck. Two engines are offered.

2008 Toyota Sequoia 2008 Toyota Sequoia -2If you opt for the 381-hp 5.7-liter V8, your SUV can tow 10,000 pounds thanks to 401 lb.-ft. of stump-pulling torque. Mileage isn't great—14/19 city/highway—though a hybrid option is in the works. Inside, the three-row seats lean, fold, slide and otherwise alter themselves to add to passenger comfort. The center seat can slide a short distance to place a baby seat closer to mom and dad.

The way-back seats fit three and have a recline option. And they power-fold flat into the floor. On the road, all is quiet and smooth. Cabin noises are close to sedan-level, even on rutted road surfaces. However, the steering gets almost too light at highway speeds. Prices should start at just more than $33,000. —Jim Dunne
