Toyota HiLux WorkMate

Already leading the race in new vehicle sales year-to-date, Toyota is now rolling out the new member of the HiLux family, the WorkMate, for the first time with automatic transmission. The new WorkMate single cab and double cab automatic models take the HiLux 4×2 range to 16 models and will no doubt strengthen Toyota’s strong sales record.

Toyota is definitely doing something right, offering just what car buyers are after, FCAI figures show the company retained the top sales position in September with a market share of 22.4 percent, well ahead of Holden on 13.1 per cent and Ford with 11.0 per cent.

The launch of the WorkMate automatic is part of an overall visual and technical upgrade for the now 32-model range of Toyota HiLux 4×2 and 4×4 utilities. The upgrade includes Euro IV compliance for HiLux’ two VVT-i equipped petrol engines (WorkMate’s 2.7-litre engine and the 4.0 litre V6), larger front brakes and improved rear suspension for all 4×2 models as well as improved front suspension across the entire range. WorkMate also comes with the option of ABS anti-skid brakes and all models now have 15-inch steel wheels.

The HiLux’ facelift features include newly shaped grilles, a fresh front bumper and headlight design on the outside as well as some slight changes for the interior.

As the company continues to build on its winning formula, we’ll see if the new strings to its bow see Toyota at the top of the table for October sales as well.

2009 Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux has seen rapid growth since it was launched in Europe in 2005, sales last year had reached 39000 units bringing its market share up to a massive 22%. Toyota aim to further cement their place at the top of the market with the new facelifted 2009 Hilux sales targets set at 47,000 units for 2009.

The rapid growth was also enough to tell Toyota that there isn't much wrong with the current Hilux, modifications for the updated model are subtly done. The front fascia receives a redesigned grille and bumper featuring larger and wider air vents designed to give the impression of a low centre of gravity. Toyota will also offer two new exterior colors for the Hilux: Island Blue and Graphite Grey, and to complete the additional options, new 15inch and 17inch wheels are availabel for the 3.0 D-4D Double Cab HL3 model and Double Cab Invincible model respectively.

The interior gets a redesigned steering wheel featuring a four-spoke design with integrated controls for the audio system and the controls for wipers and lights have also received sight modifications giving them a better ergonomic design. A new air conditioning system boasts new push button control, a digital display and a highly efficient filter that removes dust and pollen.

The 3.0 D-4D engine benefits from increased torque of 17Nm to 360Nm which is the result of a new five-speed automatic transmission that offers smoother performance and better efficiency than the previous four-speed version. The combined CO2 figure is now 236g/km whilst fuel consumption improves from 30.1mpg to 31.7mpg.

2009 Toyota HiLux preview

A source deep inside Toyota has managed to sneak out some pictures and information regarding the facelift for the new Toyota HiLux, with production of the new model starting this month.

Although from what we can gather the only significant change is the slight redesign of the front and minor improvements to the interior.

The Thai-made HiLux will also receive cruise control on SR5 manual transmission double cab models.
