Siemens, employing prototype hybrid technology, showed off a modified Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe that boasts faster acceleration, more torque—and better fuel economy—than its gasoline-powered equivalent. However, the company admitted that the car was "far from ready for production", and too expensive to manufacture or sell.
Karmann also showed a concept of the W203 Sportcoupe (prefacelift), which was turned into a convertible car with softtop. This prototype never reached the production status

2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Only minor changes are in store for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Front seat-mounted pelvic airbags have been added to all models, and the optional hard drive-based navigation system now offers 40GB of storage space as well as Zagat restaurant information. Driver side memory settings with a power steering column and a tilt-down reverse passenger mirror are now standard on the C350 (and optional on other models as part of a package). In addition, Sport sedans get a newly designed instrument cluster.

Although the car's dimensions, suspension design and V6 engines largely carried over from the previous generation, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class gained an improved interior with higher-quality materials, an optional hard-drive-based navigation and multimedia system, and an easier-to-use COMAND interface. The Luxury and Sport trim levels were also clearly differentiated in terms of styling, suspension tuning and interior design. Midway through the model year, Mercedes released the long-awaited, all-new C63 AMG. The performance-oriented sedan came loaded with a 6.2-liter V8 cranking out a thundering 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque.

This year, Mercedes further distinguishes its Luxury models from the Sport models; the latter get a sport-inspired instrument cluster, which is a logical addition to the Sport's already distinctive interior, and more aggressive exterior styling. On the safety front, all 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models get seat-mounted front pelvic airbags. For music buffs, the optional hard-drive-based navigation system's larger size (40GB) now has 6GB reserved for music.

With its mix of driving involvement, comfort and high-tech goodies, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a fine choice for an entry-luxury sedan. However, the V6-powered models are up against stiff competition from the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G35 and Lexus IS. Here, the C-Class holds advantages in terms of its top-notch build quality and distinct models, but is let down by its comparatively less powerful engines and typically higher price. The C63 AMG is a different animal, though -- with all that power and torque, it gives the Audi RS4, Lexus IS-F and the vaunted M3 a serious run for their money.

300,000 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models delivered during first sales year

In the year since its market launch, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is continuing the success story of the predecessor model: more than 300,000 customers have purchased either a sedan or station wagon variant of the new model since it’s official introduction on March 31, 2007.

“The sedan got off to an excellent start, and since its premiere at dealerships at the end of last year, the new C-Class station wagon has also been enjoying high popularity,” says Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Both models, in fact, have posted growth rates of 70 percent on the corresponding periods from the prior year since their respective launches. As a result, the new C-Class has been the worldwide leader in its market segment since the beginning of 2008.”

German customers also are very enthusiastic about the new C-Class: according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, the model was once again the top-selling vehicle in the mid-range segment in April. The most important market for the C-Class is Germany which accounts for 25 percent of total sales, followed by the U.S., UK, Italy, and South Africa. A total of 290,000 C-Class sedans from the 204 Series have been sold worldwide since market launch in the spring of 2007, and 25,000 customers have taken delivery of a new C-Class station wagon since that model variant was introduced in December.

C-Class sedans are produced in Germany at Mercedes-Benz plants in Sindelfingen and Bremen. They are also built in East London, South Africa, and have been manufactured in Beijing, China, since March 2008 as well. The station wagon is produced exclusively in Bremen, and the new CLCis manufactured at Mercedes-Benz’ Juiz de Fora plant in Brazil.

Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG

Mercedes-AMG has unleashed the highly anticipated C 63 AMG derived from the highly acclaimed and award winning Mercedes-Benz C-Class range. The C 63 AMG is far from out of place at the iconic home of the bent-eight, boasting an AMG-designed and developed 6.3-litre V8 petrol engine.

Developing peak output of 336kW at an enthusiastic 6,800rpm and maximum torque of 600Nm, the C 63 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

Power is left in the more than capabale hands of AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7-Tronic transmission, equipped with steering-wheel mounted shift paddles and an automatic throttle blipper for rapid downshifts.

Driving agility is enhanced with AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and the new, 3-stage ESP, along with specially-developed AMG sports suspension components and 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.

Distinguishing the AMG deviation from the standard C-Class is a new bonnet with power domes, the distinctive AMG radiator grille, flared front wings, the AMG rear apron with a black diffuser insert, the AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes and the AMG spoiler lip.

The new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Saloon begins at $139,500.
