Jaguar XJ Numbering

Just prior to World War II Jaguar, known then as SS Cars, started using a numbering system beginning with the letter X for internal projects. X meaning experimental, XB for military chassis projects and XF to XK for engines. This numbering system has never been consistent and there appears to be many omissions and duplications.

Number Project
XJ3 3.4-litre and 3.8-litre S-Type saloon cars (known to the Pressed Steel Company as 'Utah')
XJ4 Designation of the project which led to what was publicly announced as the XJ6
XJ5 Modifications to the Mark Ten for air-conditioning
XJ6 A V12 racing engine with four-overhead-camshafts
XJ8 E-type 2+2 version

Kinds XJ Jaguar Cars And Reviews

And somewhere in the crowd lurked a new car. Yes, reader, this glamorous event was nothing more than the motor industry disclosure. Except for the automotive journalists seem to have been abducted and replaced by the Hollywood tinsel.

So now marque think youth, celebrity and fashion is the way forward? Lamborghini, perhaps? Fiat Cheeky? Urban MINI?

Nope. The answer is Jaguar, the Coventry cat, the last refuge of a tie, mustache-sporting, cigar-puffing corporate and executive golf series, which is exclusively for more than 50 and have never heard of Elle Macwhatserface. Jaguar.

Except that Jaguar does not exist anymore, for the car in the middle of last summer party, the new XJ, marking the end of a sharp turnaround by the brand in recent years.

Step begins with the designer Ian Callum's arrival from Aston Martin, followed by a stream, punchy XK sports car, which makes you wonder why the boys peeled out extra bankers to Aston's V8 Vantage.

Then we have a nice XF saloon, with a pulsing red starter button, futuristic silver cylindrical gear selector is emerging from the center console, iPod connectivity funky, cool blue interior lighting and more aggression on the road than the equivalent deployed by Audi or Mercedes.

And now we have the new XJ, being built in Castle Bromwich, snoring on the start line like an old Jaguar, but with poise and more streamlined manner than anything that had brought the previous badge. Three of Germany, may also retreated across the Strait because there has never been a better reason to buy the UK.

Experts agree residues - EurotaxGlass's predicts that after three years of ownership, the new XJ will have a residual value is better than the Audi A8, Mercedes S-class or BMW 7-series, keeping 40 percent of the price.

Jason King, head of market intelligence for EurotaxGlass's, said XJ "is sure to attract a wider and younger audience, building on good work in helping brands Jaguar XF redefine itself and appeal to younger buyers.

We were not surprised to see Jaguar going head to head Mercedes S-class, traditionally the industry leader to defend these values. The XJ offers the interior, equipment and overall quality level that is more familiar to buyers of models offered by other major British luxury car brands such as Bentley and Aston Martin. "

Ah, the interior design. No one doubts it: while from the outside some people might argue that the XJ looks just like a stretch XF (actually much more slender and more sharply, with the silhouette coupé aggressive), in digging yourself into the lap of luxury that sets these cars other than from not only IF but also Teutonic rivals.

This may not feel quite so large as Germany, but far more stylish and attractive. Jaguar insists "the XJ cars are the perfect option for any president and chief executive of the British boardroom".

Please. This car is too elegant for entrepreneurs; let them find their stock in the back of a 7-series or A8. The XJ deserve an appreciative audience, a passenger who will stroke the shiny wood and cold metal fillet, and slide gracefully along the cream wrapped in leather chairs.

Base trim level, called the Luxury, gives you footwell lighting, door puddle lamps, American walnut veneer, dressed in soft leather seats and chrome circular air vents.

Stepping into the portfolio pruning and walnuts into ebony, with beautiful wood and chrome trays that fold out from the back of the front seats for laptops and executive papers - there is even a pen slot on your Montblanc tray.

Above specifications, Supersport, offering oak or, if you lose your marbles, jaw-droppingly awful choice of all black leather interior (including the roof lining and door linings doubt dotted) and the glove box and storage center lined box-purple stimulate migraine feels.

Why did you choose for your trip punk when Jaguar went to such efforts to create a sublime art-deco interior of the timber and out of my skin. Maybe for Americans.

German executives have a tricks barge their arms, but they are also fantastic to drive, as long as your idea is a fantastic hour spent eating smooth kilometer transcontinental highway. The XJ does not disappoint here, either.

This will be offered with a choice of three-liter V6 diesel or five-liter gasoline engine, with a long wheelbase option for an additional legroom (accounting for 30 per cent of UK sales).

We tested the diesel version (85 per cent of UK sales), which is the engine we know from our long-term S. XF Diesel It 's almost silent on the XJ, thanks to excessive soundproofing, and provides a lot of torque to all UK road conditions.

Press the dynamic and electronic screen in front of you go red, while you tighten the seat belt and six-speed automatic transmission with a quick drop of a few gears.

It's fun, but not required: in the comfort mode the steel coil good works convey the condition of the road while the rear air suspension kept dreaming things, like the old Jags.

Steering is fine precision instruments, and there is very little to argue with the driver's point of view. One caveat to Emptor, however: check back satnav system, in our cars, playing until the end.

Oh, and the blind, where information systems are still not functioning properly. Surrender, Jaguar.

Smart Satnavs side, XJ is a remarkable step change from his predecessor. It's more powerful, economical, much more dynamic style of driving.

We really struggle to find a bad word Jaguar today, given the average age of staff is 39 Telegraph Motoring, the work done to Coventry cat.

2008 Jaguar XJ Super V8

Heads of state, top-level business executives and the independently wealthy are the typical purchasers of limousines such as the Jaguar XJ Super V8, the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes S-Class, and they heavily favor the German offerings if sales figures are any indication. But just being rich and powerful doesn’t make them right. Certainly, the BMW and Mercedes sedans offer impressive features, capable platforms and what many consider attractive styling. But they lack what the Jaguar has in spades - character.

That’s not to say the XJ isn’t an attractive and feature-packed car, however. Radar-adaptive cruise control, satellite radio, dual headrest DVD players, airplane-style seatback trays, supple expanses of leather and luxurious deep-pile wool carpeting are spotted on the briefest of glances at the vehicle’s spec sheet. But that’s not where the charm of the XJ lies. The atmosphere in its cabin, the feeling you get looking at it from across a parking lot, the shoved-back-in-the-seat acceleration when driving with a heavy foot - these are the things the XJ does so well.

2008 Jaguar XJ Super V8-12008 Jaguar XJ Super V8-2The car does an admirable job in both of its split-personalities, a surprising result as compromise cars are usually disappointing. The Super V8 continually raises expectations - its constantly-adjusting air-ride suspension offers both fantastic ride quality and precise handling, for example. Likewise the car’s high-speed stability is so great that rear-seat passengers will have no reason to suspect a 100mph (160km/h) dash is anything but a sedate 50mph (80km/h) cruise.

The styling of the car may incorporate features reminiscent of the 1970s, but it’s an all-modern machine that equals or exceeds the BMW and Mercedes in technical ability. All-aluminum construction means lightweight despite its tremendous size, tipping the scales at just 4,006lbs (1,820kg) and stretching the tape measure to 205.3in (5.21m). At just an inch shy of seven feet wide (2.13m) it’s not a narrow car either. It will easily fill any parking spot you might find short of an RV park or all-night truck stop. But the doors are surprisingly accommodating, rarely impinging upon the next-closest car’s space, lightening the worry of damaging the car’s fabulous metallic paint.

A 4.2L supercharged 90-degree V8 engine turns out 400hp and 413lb-ft of torque, with the peak twist available at a reasonable 3,500rpm. Forced induction isn’t a common feature on moderate-displacement eight-cylinder ultra-luxury limousines, but it should be. The XJ Super V8 provides a level of acceleration and performance that belies its size and its market segment. Sub-six-second 0-60mph (96km/h) times and strong throttle response throughout the rev range make the car eminently driveable. You’d have to upgrade to the S600’s V12 engine or an AMG model to find more power in the Mercedes S-Class, and the V12 is the only engine BMW offers with more power as well - but upgrading to V12 engines is a costly proposition.

2011 Jaguar XJ mule Spied

Jaguar is obviously suffering no ill-effect following the Tata takeover, with yet another test mule - this time of the new XJ - spotted in the US.

While the limited camouflage may seem to indicate this is nothing more than a subtle face lift - make no mistake, the next XJ is tipped to sport a radical new and daring look.

2011 Jaguar XJ -12011 Jaguar XJ -2The reason for this aesthetic overhaul, according to Jaguar’s chief of design, Ian Callum, is that the XJ model is selling in considerably lower figures than the more modern-looking XF.

The end result of what we see here is the underpinnings of the next XJ married to the existing model’s sheet metal, - with a few crude additions to handle the increased wheel base.

The underpinnings aren’t all new however, with Jaguar modifying the existing all-aluminum platform to re-use it for the code-named X351 which will make its official debut in spring 2011.

Jaguar XJ spied

For Jaguar to truly stay alive under its new India owners, Tata, it needs to revitalise its entire range and the large XJ sedan, rooted in the past, needs a complete make over. That’s just what is coming and these photographs by our spy photographers show a mule testing the car that will radically replace the currently very staid Jaguar XJ sometime in 2009.

The best information on the new Jaguar XJ, which will echo the recently released XF sedan, but in an even more radical shape, has come from English car magazine Autocar , which obtained considerable inside information from sources who have been shown a full size model of the new Jaguar XJ.

Jaguar XJ -1Jaguar XJ -2The new generation Jaguar XJ will bring a welcome shift in design for the next XJ, which desperately needs a more muscular look to match its athletic moves.

The present iteration has an extremely capable chassis, but its interior and exterior designs are stuck in the past. The next-generation car will still use the current XJ sedan’s aluminium underpinnings, but it will gain more modern lines conceived under the supervision of Jaguar design chief Ian Callum.

Autocar’s information says that when the crucial vehicle, codenamed X351, begins production in late 2009, it will rock the luxury market.

According to sources Jaguar thinks the new XJ could be pitched against cars as wide ranging as the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and even the Bentley Flying Spur. Pricing for the top-end model could break through the $250,000 barrier.

Although the lightweight aluminium chassis of the current Jaguar XJ will be carried over, the car’s upper structure has been redesigned. This has allowed Jaguar’s design team to design a car with a coupe-like flowing roofline.

Aside from a low roof and high tail combination, the new car is said to have a narrower nose than the Jaguar C-XF, with narrower headlights (likely to be LED units), although it retains the large, square grille that made its debut on the Jaguar C-XF. One proposal is for the grille’s mesh to be made up of hundreds of tiny Jaguar ‘leaper’ cutouts.

2010 Jaguar XJ

Jaguar’s restyled version of the slow-selling sedan. In this chapter, long-running Brit traditions are tossed in the dustbin and replaced with a design inspired by the company’s new style indicator, the XF.

Sales in the U.S. are circling the loo. Now that Indian conglomerate Tata owns Jag, the company will need fresh models to spice up the brand.

2010 Jaguar XJ-12010 Jaguar XJ-2Platform: The lightweight aluminum structure of the current XJ soldiers on with only minor changes to accommodate the new body.

Powertrain: New direct-injection versions of the existing Jaguar V-8 engine. Base versions should make 350 horsepower. The supercharged engine is bumped to 5.0 liters and 500 horsepower.

New looks could turn off stuffy traditionalists, whereas potential converts might not even notice. Also, the uncertainty surrounding Jaguar’s long-term future could undermine sales.

Production is to begin at the end of 2009 with an on-sale date at the start of 2010. Pricing should remain in line with the current XJ’s, at $65,000 to $90,000.

Jaguar XJ Diesel still Britain’s Greenest Luxury car

“For a proper luxury car to achieve 1000.2 miles (1609kms) on a single tank of diesel is simply remarkable. It’s enough to make you want to buy one”

The 2.7-litre diesel engine in the Jaguar XJ series is a robust powerplant which can move the car along rapidly if need be, but at the same time, is capable of achieving a mind-blowing 53.5mpg (4.4-L/100kms).

Jaguar XJ Diesel -1Jaguar XJ Diesel -2I mean we are not talking about a frugal little 5-speed manual four cylinder bread box but rather one of the most luxurious cars in the category with an interior more akin to a five star hotel fit out, than a four door sedan.

Moreover, the big Jag’s CO2 emission count of 139g/km is so low for a car of these dimensions I had to re-examine the calculations. Again this level of carbon pollution is more like what you would expect of a small econobox, than a lavishly appointed flagship model in the large car category.

Incidentally, the diesel engine is a twin turbo unit and the entire car is made from aluminium, but still weighs in at 1659kg. And it’s not slow either. How’s 0-100km/h in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h.

2008 Jaguar XJ6 D Review

Introducing the 2008 Jaguar XJ6 D. This is proof that Jaguar is still building great looking cars only this time it’s a diesel. There’s something quite special about driving a Jaguar too. It’s as if drivers around you are a little protective of the old girl. For the first day or so, behind the wheel of the XJ6 D, I was content to amble around at limo slow speeds and soak up my fellow drivers admiration of the car.

2008 Jaguar XJ6 D2008 Jaguar XJ6 D-22008 Jaguar XJ6 D-32008 Jaguar XJ6 D-4Lurking beneath the bonnet is a seriously capable 2.7-litre V6 twin turbo diesel, that won’t quite fly you to the moon, but it will get you to where you want to go – quickly. It’s no fat cat either. The XJ6 D like all XJ models has a body made entirely of aluminium, which keeps its weight down to a class leading 1659 kilos. That’s significantly lighter than the best from Germany. Power from this engine is a modest 152kW, which pairs up nicely with a not so modest 435Nm of torque. If you compare this engine to the 3.0 Litre V6 petrol powered car, the diesel is way out in front. Although maximum power for the 3.0 litre six is 16kW more than the diesel, that power is not on song until high up in the rev range at 6,800rpm. The diesel on the other hand is reaching the high notes at 4000rpm. Far more useable and a lot more fun!

When you buy a Jaguar XJ, you expect superior ride quality. That’s been a core brand value of the company, forever. It simply doesn’t matter that it’s a diesel. Buyers will expect Jaguar to have dealt with the fact that diesel engines generate higher levels of vibration than petrol engines. And they have. If you purchase an XJ6 D, you will be driving in the only car in its class, to have electronically controlled active engine mounts, which cancel out 90% of engine vibration at idle as well as those from poor road surfaces.

Specifications:
Engine: 2.7 Litre twin turbo diesel with intercooler
Power: 152kW
Torque: 435Nm
0-100km/h: 8.2 seconds
Top speed: 225kph
Fuel tank: 85L
Fuel consumption (combined): 8.1 L/100kms
Kerb weight: 1659 kg
CO2 emissions: 214g/km (low)
Drive: Rear wheel drive
Turning Circle: 11.7m
Price: $154,900 to $234,900

2012 Jaguar XJ Spies Nab It, But You’d Never Recognize It

While the world gets a grip on the loveliness that is the new XF sedan, Jaguar’s pressing ahead with a revamp of its big XJ sedan. And that’s exactly what spies have captured in cold-weather testing–the first prototypes of the new XJ coming in time for the 2012 model year.

2012 Jaguar XJ2012 Jaguar XJ-2Jaguar facelifted the XJ for the 2008 model year, but a total makeover has been in the works for more than a year, in spite of collapsing sales in the U.S. and an imminent sale to India’s Tata Motors.

The prototype has the body of the current XJ, but with a wider track and a modified platform. Codenamed X351, the XJ replacement is expected to bow by early 2011.
