2010 BMW 5 Series present

The sixth generation of the 5-Series (BMW F10) made its debut on 23 November 2009 as a 2010 model.

Improvements include a front dual ball joint short-long arm suspension, and rear multilink suspension. For the powertrain, there will be a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the single turbo inline-6 N55, and the twin-turbo V8 N63.

It is designed by Adrian van Hooydonk, with a more prominent upright split kidney grille and the absence of the "Bangle butt" rear-end styling of its E60 predecessor. Externally, the car is a more traditional BMWesque design; a far more sober effort after the highly controversial E60.

Although it bears some resemblance to the E60 with the wide kidney grilles and a very pronounced Hofmeister kink, the creases in the bonnet and just underneath the door are clearly related to the E39 and other earlier 5 series models. Inside marks the return of the centre console being clearly angled towards the driver, another marked change from its immediate predecessor which was noted for its non traditional BMW design.

However, opinion is divided, as a reviewer described the F10 as too bland and conservative, compared to the E60 predecessor, as well as having too much of a resemblance to the E90 3-Series.

BMW 5 Series Interior Spied

Spy photographers have caught the interior in clear view of the new BMW 5 Series for first time. Even with a significant amount of specially cut foam padding used to disguise the instrument panel and center console from prying eyes, we can still make out some new details.

The i-Drive controller is placed on the right side of the gear lever, and similar to Audi's MMI interface, there are additional navigation/function buttons surrounding the controller. Also similar to Audi are the new buttons and scroll wheels on the totally new steering wheel. Sitting at the base of the gear selector console is a big button with a “(P)” for the electronic parking brake.

BMW 5 Series -1BMW 5 Series -2The shape of the dashboard is also brand new, although the two circular recesses on the passenger side are fake as well as the old i-Drive controller location. The real deal is more like, you guessed it, the Audis.

Keyless-go, active suspension, improved night vision, head-up display and a bigger sat nav screen are all features that we will find in the new 5 Series. Due to all of the heavy plastic panels, the exterior is still hard to recognize, but at least we can now see the actual size of the characteristic BMW twin kidney grilles.

The new F10 5-Series will be available as sedan, touring (wagon) and fastback, although the later will have its own name (still going under the work name PAS). Four-wheel-drive as an option will be available for all three versions as well as a new 8-speed electronic automatic transmission.

The new F10 5-Series is expected launch in spring 2010 as a 2011 model.

2008 BMW 5 Series

(from BMW Press Release) Building on last year’s updates, BMW’s 2008 5 Series Sedans and Sport Wagon receive another significant freshening and, in the case of 6-cylinder models, a major boost in power and efficiency. Complementing the power increase, a thoroughly revised interior, new technological features and a freshened look front and rear ensure this benchmark collection of rear and all-wheel-drive Sedans and Sports Wagon will maintain their place at the forefront of the mid-size luxury class.

These early March 2007 release of the 2008 5 Series models represent the most significant update since their introduction in late 2003 as 2004s. Adopting the new engines introduced in the 3 Series Coupe, the 6-cylinder Sedans and Sport Wagon receive new model designations, reflecting a marked boost in power.

New technological features also make their appearance for ’08. First among these is BMW’s Lane Departure Warning system, a camera-based system that monitors lane placement, and discreetly notifies the driver via mild steering wheel vibration of any motions that might indicate an inadvertent lane change. The convenience of Active Cruise Control is extended via a new Stop and Go feature, which enables the system to function even in heavy traffic. Active Cruise allows the vehicle to come to a complete stop without losing its setting, then accelerate back up to set speed with only a touch of the accelerator pedal from the driver..

With all these changes for 2008, BMW’s 5 Series again reasserts itself as the class leader in the midsize performance-luxury field.

2008 BMW 5 Series

BMW has updated its 2008 5 Series with mild interior and exterior changes, powertrain improvements for six-cylinder models and a few assorted technology upgrades. The 5 Series goes on sale this month, starting at $45,075 for the 528i sedan. Price includes a $775 destination charge.

2008 BMW 5 SeriesThe '08 face-lift includes a revised front fascia, new taillights, a new rear air diffuser on sedan models and a freshened cabin with more leather and wood trim. The standard iDrive adds six programmable memory buttons that can be used for radio station presets or navigation destinations.

BMW said the 5 Series lineup will include five six-cylinder models and one V8 model. The 528i sedan gets a 3.0-liter N52 inline-6 engine that makes 230 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 200 pound-feet of torque at 2,750 rpm. That is an increase of 15 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing 525i. The 535i sedan has a new optional sport automatic transmission that includes steering-wheel paddle shifters plus a sport button for quicker, more dynamic shifting. A sport package on the 535i includes 18-inch wheels and tires in staggered width, marking the first time such a feature has been offered on six-cylinder models, the automaker said.

A top-of-the line 2008 BMW 550i sedan starts at $59,275, including destination. BMW said it sold 56,756 5 Series vehicles in the U.S. in 2006.
