Volkswagen Rolls Out Limited-Production 250-HP R32

CHICAGO — Volkswagen on Wednesday confirmed that its motorsports-inspired 250-horsepower R32 will be returning to the U.S. this year, but also warned that demand will be strong and quantity will be limited to only 5,000 units. The new R32 hits showrooms in August.

Current GTI and R32 owners will be notified of the opening of an R32 micro-site on VW's Web site today. A prospective R32 customer will complete a "purchase interest" form, generating what VW describes as an R32 certificate. The first 850 people who present an R32 certificate along with a deposit to a VW dealer will be able to get one of the first R32 vehicles here.

The R32 is equipped with a 3.2-liter V6 that delivers 250 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque. It is outfitted with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. VW says it accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

Other details include twin chrome exhausts, 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, a unique front grille and R32 badging. Standard features include a rear roof spoiler, deep front spoiler and body-color bumpers, side bump strips, door handles and door mirrors. Safety features include electronic stability control and antilock brakes.

In the cabin, the R32 gets aluminum-look pedals and sports seats, a 10-speaker premium CD stereo system and a trip computer.
