CHICAGO —
Smart USA said it plans to start taking $99 reservations for its
Fortwo this spring in advance of the minicar's arrival here next year. Reservations will be taken on
Smart's Web site in about two months, the company announced.
When the under-$15,000 car becomes available, those with deposits will be contacted by
Smart dealerships to find out if they are still interested. If they are, the $99 reservation fee can be applied to the Fortwo's purchase price, or the money can be refunded.
Last June, DaimlerChrysler announced that an updated version of the
Smart car would be coming to America. The U.S.-bound
Fortwo was redesigned to pass federal crash tests. The three-cylinder twin-seater is about the size of a golf cart and can be parked headfirst into a parallel-parking space.
